Just thought I'd share how some of my plants faired now that we're into spring. Lytocaryum Hoehnei I have 2 of these in the ground, both got wrapped in Christmas lights. They are proving to be pretty tough palms Lytocaryum Insigne I also have 2 of these in the ground and they made it through with Christmas lights and 5 gallon buckets over them Arenga Engleri I put a bucket over it but gave it no heat. It ended up spear pulling but is pushing me growth Oleander Completely defoliated but is beginning to recover Chamaedorea Cataractum Lost the sma…

European Fan Palm care

Hello guys, Here's the info I gathered from multiple sources. Please review and add something/disagree with somehting: Light Plant your European Fan Palm in an area that receives full-partial sun (4-6 hours of direct sunlight per day). European fan palm grows in partial sun and partial shade. While it may grow slower in the shade, the fronds will grow slightly larger than when it is grown with more sunlight. They can thrive in full sun to full shade, with fronds growing a bit larger in shadier areas. The European Fan Palm grows best in full sun. Light: Requirements at least 4 hrs of direct sun a day. Offer the pot a quarter-turn every we…

Sago Palm care

Hello guys, Here's the info I gathered from multiple sources. Please see and share if you want to add something or disagree on some points. Soil It grows best in sandy, well-drained soil, preferably with some organic matter. It needs good drainage or it will rot. Soil pH: Acidic (5.5–6.5) Sago palms aren't overly picky about their soil, as long as they have good drainage. A sandy soil that's somewhat rich in organic matter and slightly acidic to neutral soil pH is ideal. For container plants, a potting mix made for cactus or palms should be suitable. Light bright, indirect light The leaves can bleach somewhat if moved from indoors to ful…

I was out in West Texas today and snapped a few pics. Enjoy These first washingtonia filifera were in Midland, TX and saw 8 degrees in 2011, with a daytime high of 18. i saw around 100 filifera around the midland area ranging from small plants to mature ones such as these. additionally there were a few trachycarpus and post 2011 robusta growing. I saw no more than 3 small, aweful looking sabals scattered around town.

Sabal causiarum 'Lisa' 1 2

I'm calling out Tom GA to provide more photographic evidence of this palms existence. Much like the BigFoot of the Northwest, or the Loch Ness Monster; Sabal causiarum 'Lisa' seems like it might be a hoax to lure tourists to the Bamboo Farm in Georgia. Just like those 'monsters', all we have is one grainy photo as "proof" of this Monster Palm's existence. Here it is......... So is it real....or an elaborate prank?

When can I put my zone 9 palms outside?

Hello, Should I wait until the temperature never drops below 50F (10C) or it's fine if, say, one night it drops to 40-45F (5-7C) but in general it's 50F+ (10C+)? Currently our average day temperature is 70F (21C) and average night temperature is 47F (8C). In a few days I will have: Majesty, Cat, Sago, European, Windmill, Pindo, all in pots.

I planted this palmetto as a seedling about 1979-80 at my parents home in Mocksville, NC in USDA Zone 7b. It has never been protected nor fertilized. It survived the severe freezes in the mid 1908s, but the bud was still underground at that time. The first photo is the palmetto in May, 2018, after the severe winter of 2017-18 in which there were approximately 8 days in which the temperature never exceeded 32F. I'm not sure what the absolute lows were but they were probably in the mid to upper single digits. The fronds were burnt, but not the petioles nor the bud, both of which which remained mostly green. It does have a southwestern exposure with a light, deciduous canopy…

Coming into 3rd Spring. Looking good except the most cold hardy one the windmill. However, I will says it’s had a rough go since being in a pot. It had issues and I got it on sale. It’s been in the ground the longest at 4years but idk. I’ve continued to treat it and it has a good spear coming up, but it never just taken off

Thought I'd post an update now that spring is here. After coming off a bad winter in 2021-2022, we had ANOTHER bad one this year. The absolute lows got to -9.4C at my house, but the cold was much shorter duration compared to 21/22. Nothing I had outside in the ground was protected and here are some of the results: WINNERS! Trachycarpus fortunei - Duh. Doesn't care about cold weather, in fact it laughs at it. Flower spathes are on their way out as we speak. Butia odorata - Came out pretty good considering. Some tips and fronds were burnt (probably 30% overall), but the emerging spear is still solid and green. Looks a little ratty right now, but even in my…

Armata vs filifera cold hardiness 1 2

Hi everyone, I am wondering which palm species is more cold tolerant: Brahea armata or Washingtonia filifera? Looking at these bluish/white wax covered leaves of the armata one could think it would cope better with low temperatures. On the other hand washingtonia filifera has a much more northern natural range and there are some crazy "come back to life stories" from the texas freeze in2021. So it would be great if you could report on your experiences and opinions about these species. Thanks in advance!

Hello, I always wanted to live somewhere south, with palm trees. But I ended up in NJ, USA, in zone 6a Anyway, I don't want my location to stop me from having a palm tree. What if I don't plant my palm trees, but keep them in large pots so that I could put them in my 9' garage during cold days/months? This is a list of palms that I'm considering: Common Name Scientific name Dwarf Palmetto Tree Sabal minor Pindo Palm Tree Butia Capitata Windmill Palm Tree Trachycarpus fortunei Needle Palm Tree …

Hello guys, Can sago palm grow well & healthy in 6a provided I will take it inside for winter? Last year my sago palm lost almost all its leafs, I don't know why. Maybe it just doesn't like this climate? It was doing ok inside, just growing super slowly, but then I put it outside last year this happened (see below). As you can see, only 3 leafs left Why could it happen? And what can I do to help it recover?

Hi guys. Which is more crucial to a palm's survival max low temperature or prolonged cold? I was looking at my weather history and it got me wondering, if the low is below 20 but the days high is in the 60's would that be better for palms or sub 32 for a few days?

Hi everyone, I'm new here and need help. I just moved here from southern California and really do miss my palms.😀 I'm about 75 miles north of Dallas (7b), have clay soil and keep getting conflicting information about palms, like cold hardiness, growth rate & max size. I did try Bismarckia and date palms (Canary and regular), last year. I had the seeds growing good in a baggie floating in my aquarium. By the time winter set in they ~2' and had about 3 leaves. I heard that they were cold hardy and planted all of them (10). Never heard of a polar vortex, but you know what happened. I want to try again but don't want to lose them again. I don't mind protecting them, as …

Mule issues... Again

I posted a thread on here last summer about my Mule that seemed to be declining and I had thought it was from the fire ants that had taken up residence around the base of the trunk. After clearing them out the tree seemed to be doing a little better, but the fronds all still yellowed and it looked a little rough. This winter we had the freeze with a low of 17° which damaged most of the fronds. After letting them grow out I trimmed off everything that was yellow or brown and figured I had a fresh start with an all-green crown. Fast forward a month or 2 and this thing looks like it's on its way out. All the fronds dying off, spotting, turning brown, the last spear turn…

I wonder if the big box stores here in Texas actually sell pure Robustas . How can I identify if it's a pure Robusta or a hybrid ? How does a Robusta dominate Filibusta look like? The reason why I'm looking for answers is my advertised California fan palms turn more and more into Robustas . I've bought these two young palms at our private nursery in 3G pots. The new fronds coming out do have a lot of Robusta in it. I'll post pics later the day .
