I'm planning a trip to the RGV soon and I plan to pick up some palms I need to replace my washies and queens, luckily those are a dime a dozen from local growers Also I want to pickup some royals and foxtails, I know of one local growe in mcallen who has 5 gallon foxtails and royals for 25$ each and 10 gallon for 100$ ill go with the fivers because I dont get his drastic rise in price. I think now im comfortable enough to be able to protect these. Note my washies and queens didnt die of cold, they put plenty of growth on, my queen was hit with fungus, then ants, then rot, same with my washie minus the ants. (The ants were sprayed for and should be gone…

What was once maybe the largest Palmetto in the PNW, sadly after the winter of 21 began declining, and today I see the crown is gone and possibly trunk cut to try and save. Too bad after making to such a size. This is in West Seattle.

Its that time of year when half of my house gets torn down by a tornado and spring is here! Palm tree looks like it kicked the bucket but you never know. Anyways, this year our climate skipped spring and we are straight into summer (we never have an actual spring). Anyways, the tropical landscaping is soon to be worked on as planting will be in may and I will get to work in april after my birthday!

Hopefully another one doesn't bite the dust after this past winter. This mule (partially) spear pulled today and didn't look very promising looking down into the growth point. Figured I should remove whatever was festering down in there. Fingers crossed

Growing Sabal Palmetto in the landscape from seed..

Hello, I’ve been a member on the forum for a little while now but this is my first actual post.. so I just had a question and I believe I’m in the right section on the forum.. So I’ve grown a few Sabal Palmettos from seed and they have about 4-5 strap leaves and I have planted them in my landscape here in my warm 8a zone in central GA (15 miles away from what’s considered 8b, so very close) and so my question is, are palmettos worth the time to wait on them to grow as opposed to planting, say, Windmill palms I’ve grown from seed that are already going palmate that will grow circles around the palmettos as far as rate of growth (I’m familiar with the fact that they take a …

So I'm thinking about moving my trachycarpus closer to my pool. How long will it be in shock 🤔 can I expect it to grow at all? So far we are having seasonal temperatures and it has been slowly pushing new growth. Thanks for your reply in advance.

Help with a dying Trachy
by newtopalmsMD- 2 followers

During the evening on two consecutive days just before Christmas, temperatures in my part of MD fell from like 60F to 8F My three trachys experienced terrible damage to existing fronds but two of them (4 ft trunk and 2 ft trunk) are putting out new green frond (some with spots). The third (another 4 ft trunk) has done nothing since Dec and when I checked today I pulled the 5 fronds in the pic below. The rest of the tree is in the other pic. I had been able to spray the three trachys with copper fungicide in Jan and Feb, (along with using some H2O2 on other warmer days, but some medical stuff kept me from doing anything in March. So now I'm looking for suggesti…

Bulletproof sabal palmetto seedling
by DreaminAboutPalms- 1 reply

I dug up this seedling when it had one leaf back in 2021 in austin, then planted it in ground in Dallas at my apartment last August, before realizing that this area floods every time it rains, completely submerging it, sometime by 10 inches of water. During the freeze this winter it was covered in several inches of solid ice and i figured it was a goner. Walked past it yesterday and saw some green. Amazing.

Regenerated Sabal coming soon 1 2

I picked out and paid for a regenerated Sabal palmetto from Kitty Hawk Garden Center last week. I picked the fat one in the middle. The root ball is 3' across. It will get installed in another week or so. Apparently they "wash them down like pilings" - meaning that they dig the hole with a jet of water rather than a shovel. It's going into soil that is basically sand. I get the impression that they plant them lower than they were before. The soil is sandy enough that this probably works fine - despite some research suggesting that planting deeper can contribute to problems later. They don't prop these palms. I'm a little nervous about the project. We don't …

What combination would be your fantasy mule and why? What would be the thinnest trunked of both species? Feel free to share pics of some of the more unusual species listed. Limit it to only Butia and Syagrus species.......Jubaea, Allagoptera, Parajubaea, Coco's and Jubaeopsis are not the same animal and are not invited to this party. I pulled these off Wikipedia: Butia species Butia archeri Butia campicola Butia capitata Butia catarinensis Butia eriospatha Butia exilata Butia exospadix Butia lallemantii Butia lepidotispatha Butia leptospatha Butia marmorii Butia matogrossensis Butia microspadix Butia noblickii Butia odorata Butia paraguayensis But…

Mule palm disaster
by kearney102- 7 replies

Hi people, Just after a bit of advice for my mule palm after this winter I've had a total nightmare in terms of potential losses on my palms. I'm in the Uk (us zone 8b) and this is my mule palm now (picture). She's totally been wiped out and left with a huge cavity in the growing area, she's being kept dry and little heat, and keeping humidity down (plastic I know) . Am I wasting my time? Shall give her the bullet and cry my eyes out haha. Thanks Chris

Let's say it's a zone 9a palm and it's 45F at night on average now, but the lowest will be 38F for a very short period of time. Is it ok to put it outside?

Mexican Fan Palm (Washingtonia robusta) in 6a? 1 2

Hi guys, I found a 15 gallon Mexican Fan Palm. I like how it looks. But I'm in 6a. I think there's no way I'll be able to protect in ground? So I will probably have to take it inside for the winter. I know they grow very tall though, can this be a problem? Also, what do you think about how it looks? It's about $400 with shipment. Expensive, but I guess that's the fate of us folks in northern states?

Planting zone 8 palms in 6a?

Hello guys, I (will) have these zone 8 palms and I'd like your opinion if it's a bad idea to plant them in my zone 6a (very close to 6b): - Pindo Palm - European Fan Palm - Sago Palm - Mexican Fan Palm (some say it's zone 9, but I've seen it planted and growing well even in Canada) - Saw Palmetto I'm willing to protect them in winter, but if it will be too difficult/too long, then I may leave them potted.

Sabal minor 'Congaree' Look So Cool!
by PalmTreeDude- 11 replies

The Sabal minor population in and around Congaree National Park, which is just Southeast of Columbia, South Carolina, look really cool. They have basically 360° fronds that stick kind of upright. Look at this observation of them that I saw on iNaturalist in their habitat. I would recommend looking around the observation map as well, you can literally see the different ecotypes around the Southeast. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/10726721

Should I get rid of these millipedes/centipedes?

Hello guys, So I took some soil we had left in our garage and added it to a few palms (they lost some soil during transportation). And only then I noticed the soil had these: What do I do now? Should I get rid of them? I'm not sure if these are millipedes or centipedes. I read that centipedes are not harmful.

So far this palm seems to grow without issue in Central Texas. Minor scattered cold burn spots on leaves when down to 14 degrees a few winters ago. This individual is growing in a sheltered south-facing spot

I have a baggie full of W. filifera seedlings who's roots are about to touch the bottom of the bag. We're in for a slightly colder spell for about a week with an average of 38F lowest at night and one night 5 days from now will probably be 34F in my backyard. Daytime temps in the upper 50's to maybe 62F. I'm wondering if it would be better for them to wait to pot up and have the roots start stunting? or pot them up and put them them outside under an unheated plastic cold frame? Maybe wait till the 5 day very low mark? After that temps in high 60's to low 70's and lows still around 38F average.. I thought it would take longer for them to reach the bottom of the bag, b…
