Shortage of Velveeta "cheese"?
by DoomsDave- 12 replies
Apparently, some stores are having trouble getting it Velveeta "cheese" by Kraft. (According to Wikipedia, Velveeta isn't really cheese.) The last time I actually ate some was back when LBJ was President. How about you, on this post polar vortex day?

polyphagous shot hole borer

Went to a seminar detailing this bug today and half the avocado growers in Southern Cal were there along with many pesticide applicators. Do a search, 286 known tree species it's gotten into so far. The one found in LA County is genetically different than the one recently found in El Cajon. AND...it is no bigger than a sesame seed! It was not an uplifting seminar.

Happy Winter and Summer solstice

Not to steal the thunder from X-mas, but as a gardener, the solstice is to be celebrated, since it means days will now slowly get longer as the earth is making the slow turn along the far end of its elliptic orbit. And in the Southern hemisphere, it means days will now slowly get shorter. I've always wondered what either of the solstices represent in between the tropic of cancer and capricorn. Here is the data for Honolulu: Winter solstice: Sun angle: 45.3° Daylength: 10h 50m 12s Summer Solstice: Sun angle: 87.9° Daylength:13h 25m 54s That's still a pretty significant difference, 45 versus 90 degrees ought to make some impact. Compare that to my home…

The rarest thing in my garden!

That would be an albino gopher! I've caught a lot of gophers, but I've never seen this. I catch at least 2 gophers a week (4 this week so far). I must have caught several hundred gophers total. I wonder if I'll ever see this again. There's some good shots of why they call these "Pocket Gophers". They have pockets on the outsides of their cheeks for storing food.

Recycling dopy Copie leaves
by DoomsDave- 2 replies

I pruned my Copernicia alba for the first time and removed a whole [expletive] load of dead and near-dead leaves, armed with sharp spines, great for giggles if you're a serious sadist or masochist. I also had a hole that needed filling with dirt. I hate to waste, even as I do, so, I used the dead leaves to fill the hole. Then, I covered them with dirt, and after they're wet for a couple months the filled-in hole will be ready to plant, full of rich, moist compost, earthworms, germs, etc. The SHOE is size 13, steel toed, and don't you go messin' with it, you'll get kicked in the wabbly-babblies. Why bother, with doing this and preaching about it? Becau…

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
by DoomsDave- 34 replies

Howdyall: This year, instead of going to Hawaii, or Borneo, or Miami, or PNG I went to Cleveland, Ohio, USA to spend my Christmas, and New Years. For my vacation. So, I told a few people and they said to go to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and take pictures, and they'd, well . . . . Anyway, it was on New Year's Eve day, when my baby brother and Greg from Junior High (of Doom) and me all crowded into my brother's Ice Mobile and roared off for an afternoon of R and R history. And, it was cool. Yeah yeah, I know. There are issues with who gets in, and how. There are some who should be there and aren't and others who shouldn't be and are. Kinda like vis…
