Biennial photos needed

I want to thank all that have added their comments on the earlier website improvement thread and invite others to do the same. The IPS website will be undergoing many improvements over the coming months. Once completed, it should be an invaluable source of palm information. One noticeably absent feature is the mention of past Biennials. A large majority of IPS members have been unable to attend a Biennial and are curious about what exactly is involved. I had no idea how great the week can be until attending my first in 2004. That said the best way to convey the true nature of a Biennial is through photos. One look at the many Costa Rican Biennial threads and a…

I just submitted a credit card payment for a new individual membership. After submitting my payment, I was directed to a blank page. Now I have no idea if my payment went through or not. This is not good. I expected at least a confirmation of payment and a welcome to the society. Randall

Helpful Information Before You Come To Costa Rica
by Jeff in St Pete- 17 replies

Since the Biennial is right around the corner and a couple people have already emailed me asking questions, I thought I would put together a list of things that people may want to know before coming to Costa Rica. What to pack - If you have never been to San Jose and are expecting a week of blazing hot, humid weather, you will be in for a surprise. Because of San Jose's elevation at 1,161 m (3,809 ft), it enjoys a much more mild climate than the hot humid coastal areas. During May, the average highs are near 26.6c (80f) and the average lows are near 16.6c (62f). Whenever I go to San Jose, I always bring jeans or other long pants and a light jacket for the ev…

Costa Rica Biennial Rolecall 1 2 3

At the previous Biennials, there was not a published list of attendees generally available until you got to the host hotel and got your attendee packet. This meant you didn't know if old friends were attending until you got there, but it also lent a little bit of welcome surprise once you got there. I don't really want to know the total attendee list, but I would like to know who on this board is going. Will we be a majority or minority? Is the Palm Talk Board a good recruiter for IPS membership? (I think so!) What I suggest is that anyone answering this post to put their comments at the top of their post and then copy and paste their screen name (and real name i…

Stay Dry In Costa Rica!
by bgl- 3 replies

Rebeca Murillo of CRT (organizers of the Biennial) has made the following suggestion: "PONCHOS Please remind all participants that due to May is the beginning of the rainy season in Costa Rica , it might be possible that we have some scattered showers during their stay in our country, for this reason, we recommend them bringing rain ponchos for all the activities outside to the hotel." It's been pointed out that it may be possible to buy a poncho at some of the national parks for about US$3.00, which seems very reasonable. But no guarantee that they will be available at all the sites. And of course, if it's a rainy day, chances are there'll be a mad rush to buy…

For all those of you who are interested in the Biennial, but still havn't done anything about it - NOW IS THE TIME!! We have TWO cut-offs: when we reach a total of 200 participants AND March 15th - whichever comes first. It so happens that we're fairly close to the 200 participants, and needless to say, we are also getting close to March 15th. So, if you want to go, make a quick decision and register ASAP! This will be one of the best attended Biennials ever, and should be an unforgettable experience for all who're lucky enough to attend!

Leland Lei, who has been responsible for organizing and arranging the upcoming Biennial in Costa Rica in early May 2008 sent me a number of photos and asked me to post them. Unfortunately, Leland is "on the road" right now so I'm unable to get any further info from him, but I'll post the photos and hopefully we can add some additional background info as time goes by.

I went to pay for my friend who is coming on the Costa Rica trip and when I hit submit with the credit card info it went to a blank screen. No confirmation or anything. She got a email but it said a second email would be sent once the membership is paid. huh? I just paid! ??? Anyway, I emailed Bo to see who i should contact. Just a heads up to anyone who will be joining to meet the trips deadline and doesn't want to spend the additional $300 per couple.

IPS Post tours May 2008

I'm starting this thread specifically to answer questions about the post tours. Never having been to either Costa Rica or Peru I'm not in a position to answer any questions myself, but will have to get the information from those who are more informed. Here's a brief e-mail from Leland Lai, who has been responsible for organizing the Biennial in CR: "Of the three (Costa Rica) extensions, two are habitat tours (Corcovado and Tortuguero Canals), the third is at Wilson where there are labeled palms and palm specialist. In all cases for Costa Rica, the guides are bilingual and have a naturalist or botany background for these post tours. I have been to the Canals and to…

In order for this info not to get "lost in the shuffle", decided to start a new thread, rather than adding it to page 3 in the other thread. This is from Jim Cain: "I am the person to contact if there ANY questions about registration for the Biennial. I am the "IPS 2008 Biennial Registration Coordinator" and am the sole person responsible for tracking and confirming all registrations. My email address is all over the biennial website as the person to contact. The procedure is that ALL registrants get several emails from me, as follows: 1) Auto generated email sent immediately when online Registration form is submitted (whether submitted by Biennial participant of …
