GOOD NEWS FOR PALMTALK - ALL IS NOT LOST 1 2 3

Well - as they say, you can't make an omelet without breaking a few eggs. Short story is the BOD has listened - how could they not? Luckily when I turned the PM system back on, the data appears to all still be there. In addition, after talking with Peru, there appears to be some major changes proposed for PT. I will not say anymore at this point other to say it is time to put down the riot gear and get back to what we all enjoy. In a few days I think I will have some very good news to announce. But for now, I have a garden out there that needs my attention.

I would like to renew my IPS membership. I was looking for a paypal option, but do not see it. I will pay with my CC online, but I think you should make it easier for people to pay with paypal as well. You already have it as an option for donations, why not for renewals as well? Joe

Having been nominated by Palmtalk active IPS Director Ken Johnson, and seconded by Palmtalk active directors BGL (Bo-Göran Lundkvist), Kim (Kim Cyr), and DoomsDave (Dave Bleistein). I am proud to announce my candidacy for the IPS Board of Directors My experience - I have served on numerous boards and commissions in my 57 years, in roles from founder to board member to executive committee member to chairman. The organizations have ranged from High School Academies, Chamber of Commerces, Annual Conventions involving 1000+ attendees, multi-million dollar Technology Centers and State Advisory Boards. I am familiar with the organizational dynamics, technicalities, and …

Again, I post this as only a rough draft my initial thoughts with the intent of drawing out more conversation. Feel free to disagree with any or all points below, call me an idiot if you wish, but I beg you to add to this conversation. It is important. - keith We must eliminate any mission conflict between IPS and Palmtalk, creating not only a synergistic relationship, totally eliminating all real and perceived lines, technically and philosophically, between the two. We must not call for anarchy, rather we must have an open and well thought out evolution. Ideas and change must be properly vetted and explored with the membership's continuous input. We must not…

IPS Directions
by Leland Lai- 8 replies

Greetings to all Palm Talk participants. Little heard from me before but I have been in the background of the IPS for years, Pauleen Sullivan got me started in the late 60’’s. As of September, have been elected as IPS’ new President. We have exciting things on score and I wanted to share with you the direction that will be cultivated over the next several years. As you know, IPS is an all-volunteer non-profit society which has many elements of research, publishing, endowments, and much more. Efforts will be devoted to producing a more efficient way of conducting the business of the society electronically to make our once a year annual meetings more productive…

This may be fun AND educational. I hope any new or old member will enjoy reading this history. We should include information that the Board of Directors has generated through minutes all the way to stories of hot tubs and rum. If you have memories and even facts to share please help this thread to include information on all the great things The Palm Society and IPS have done through the years. Anyone have information on our start?

IPS Director elections
by bgl- 1 reply
- 2.9k views
Every two years we have an election for the IPS Board. Director terms are four years and are staggered so that roughly half of the Directors will be up for re-election once every two years. Everybody, who is an IPS member, will have received the ballot in the PALMS Supplement (Dec 2009 issue). Even though there are no contested races, I would urge all IPS members to take just a few moments, check the boxes on the ballot and return it to Faith Bishock in Florida. It must be postmarked by March 15, but why wait until the last minute!? Please take a few moments right now and get it done! Look at this as a small token of support for the IPS as well as for those 13 individuals…

The International Palm Society will hold its annual Board Meeting this coming Saturday, October 12th, at a place called Inkaterra, near Puerto Maldonado in the Peruvian rainforest. Most Directors and spouses & partners will arrive Puerto Maldonado on Thursday, Oct. 10th for the 45 minute boat ride to Inkaterra and leave on Monday Oct. 14th. Other than the Board Meeting itself, which is an all-day affair, there are also various local excursions planned before and after. Some Directors are taking part in a pre-tour to northern Peru as well, visiting an area with Ceroxylon palms. Many will also visit Cusco and Machu Picchu. Expect photos later this month here on PalmTalk…

New Members 1 2

Okay so you have grown palms for a decade or three and have the basics by now. Along comes a new member to palmtalk who asks something basic or has been misinformed. You think its a stupid question...but to those who dont know all the answers, its important to them or they would not have asked it. Sometimes I notice a distinct lack of kindness to the new members by many of our knowlegable oldsters. Could we not sit back and recall our own first palms and all the things we didnt know about, then be generous with our time and information, maybe a few words of encouragement and making newbies feel welcome will keep them coming back and one day being able to share their own e…

IPS - worldwide numbers 1 2

With reference to the ongoing discussion in the other thread in "Discussing Palm Trees" (Changing face of Palmtalk"), here are some numbers. These are, unfortunately, from Dec 2006 (and were handed out to IPS Directors at the Board meeting in San Francisco in May 2007). I don't have the Dec 2007 info yet, but the discrepancy is probably fairly minor. Number of IPS members: Hawaii/Guam: 86 NE USA: 95 NW USA: 36 South Central USA: 136 SE USA: 554 SW USA: 518 Total: 1425 (FL 494 and CA 474) Other countries: Australia: 83 France: 41 Spain: 41 Germany: 30 UK: 29 Brazil: 24 Italy: 18 Mexico: 14 South Africa: 11 Canada: 11 Thailand: 10 63 countries have…

IPS bookstore
by bgl- 10 replies

As many of you may know, the IPS Bookstore has been in limbo for quite some time. Out of privacy concerns I can't provide too much information here, but the general background, and plan for the future, is as follows: Inventory is located at private home in north San Diego county. The IPS is currently in the process of reaching an agreement with Dennis Johnson, who specializes in selling palm books, and when this is finalized the books will need to be prepared for shipment to Dennis (out of state). Exactly how and when this will take place is still being discussed. We are looking for a few enthusiastic volunteers who can help out. And obviously - no need to be an IPS…

What is a Biennial?
by Ken Johnson- 1 follower
- 5.9k views
A Biennial is a great big palm intensive field trip to a great palmy place on earth. (AKA here on PalmTalk as "The Mother Of All PRA's") If you are new here you may know about I.P.S. If not click here. http://www.palms.org/. The mission of IPS (short version) is to publish a scientific journal describing palms. To fund that endeavor the IPS raises money from (short version here too) a Biennial. I will shut up now so you can watch the videos of the trip right here as it happens!

It is soon time for the election of those IPS Directors who will serve the years 2010 to 2014. If there is anyone you know who can contribute to the goals of the International Palm Society and who is willing to dedicate the time necessary to serve as a Director, please submit his/her name for nomination. November 20, 2009 is the deadline for Administrative Secretary Larry Noblick to receive nominations so election ballots can be mailed out with the December 2009 issue of PALMS. Completed original ballots must be returned to Larry no later than March 15th, 2010, to be counted. Election results will be announced on the IPS website in April 2010 and published in the Ju…
