Hello everyone, The moderating team has recognized that many of the links in the Share-A-Site sub-forum, especially in the back pages, are non-functional. Links are broken, servers don't recognize the site address, domains have expired, the link leads to a page that has been deleted from a parent site, or to a non-palm related advertising site, and so on. Just so you are aware, I have started a project to test the links and delete any that are not working. If a link you posted is deleted, it's because it did not lead to the intended destination. I wish to be transparent about the project which is part of the transition to a future, more modern IPS web site, an…

Future of IPS (Leland's Post)

Leland, Thanks for commenting here and sharing some of the behind the scenes actions you are taking. I applaud your leadership in seeing and addressing some critical issues that are coming to a head and need to be resolved. Allow me to comment on your post. "The IPS is not sustainable in its current form since its expenses of publication, inventory, web support, PR, etc. runs an annual deficit of around $25,000 give or take." Two of the main reasons for the existence of the IPS are Research and Education. Research is done, not by the IPS but by contributing plant scientists who are given an endowment for said research. That is all well and good and acco…

GREAT NEWSLETTERS
by Dr. George- 12 replies

Earlier this week IPS sent out its newest e-newsletter. These monthly publications are absolutely great, informative, have wonderful pics, and are very well done. I thoroughly enjoy every issue. Unfortunately, folks who are not IPS members are not likely to be on the e-mailing list. But you don't have to miss out because each issue is posted on the IPS website. For those who are not IPS members and do not get the newsletter, just go to this link and check them out: IPS Newsletters Here is the August 2014 issue - there is info at the end on how you can get on the subscription list (or you could join IPS ). Request for new academic sub forum focused on the biology, botany, and ethnobotany of palms

A lot of us in the IPS are avid horticulturists and gareners, and much of the topics on PalmTalk are driven by horticultural interests. But I'd like to see the other part of the IPS represented on PalmTalk. It would really be nice if PalmTalk could have a more hard core scientific section where members could really discuss some non-horticutural topics. I can come up with a good list of topics related to palms that I'd love to see discussed: Palm Biology Palm Botany and the classification of palms The importance of Palms in biodiversity and actions to preserve palm biodiversity arond the globe The ethnoboteny of palms Palms and palaeobotany Palms within an agricult…

Discussion about the standard Biennial being too expensive for many people has got me thinking. I have come to believe the main attraction for the standard Biennial is exotic destinations with habitat viewing. The reason people are willing to pay for an expensive trip and travel with a large group of people is because of the access to palms in unusual places. Correct? Many people have waxed poetic over the helicopter ride to view palms in the Dominican Republic -- not an experience you can easily arrange on your own, right? Now in 2014 we have a Biennial in Miami, and interest from US palmophiles is kind of so-so, probably because so many have already been to Flori…

I am sure I am not alone: I would be pleased to donate like I did last year and thereafter get the 2014 PT supporter tag. Like many others I am "in love" with Palmtalk (less with IPS...) and would like to express my gratitude to Palmtalk team and community Will you start 2014 PT supporter? Many thanks. Philippe

STATE OF PALMTALK - ANNUAL REPORT
by PALM MOD- 1 follower
- 2.6k views
First off - A Happy and Good Growing New Year to everyone. I would like to report on what I hope is a "turn around" of sorts for PalmTalk that I noticed while checking some statistics at year's end. A brief history - PalmTalk hit its "heyday" back in 2008 when looked at in terms of total posts - which is one of the more meaningful stats - IMO. For many reasons, some known and some not, there has been a slow decline in this metric. That is until about 6 months ago. For the most part, at no time in the last 5 years has a month received more posts than the same month the year before. Each year it has been a little less than the year before until there was about a 35% decre…

Because there are so many threads on the TOS I figured a new one was in order. Don't shoot the messenger. I simply offered to help and was granted the ability to contact the lawyer the IPS hired for clarification. I have no more authority than anyone else that could have contacted Risk Management Chair and asked to help or requested clarification. Lets start with the wording in the terms: By posting Contributions to any part of the Websites, or making them accessible to the Websites by linking your account to any of your social network accounts, you automatically grant, and you represent and warrant that you have the right to grant, to the Company an unrestricted…

Inside the IPS and its BOD. Tell us what you know.
by Ken Johnson- 14 replies

Let's start this post to explore the IPS in great detail. There have been posts before that outline the history as well as very current topics but the whole idea of the IPS is not often discussed. Many of the members here are not members of IPS but I would urge any of you that love this place to join! The IPS is more and more being driven by membership that have been reading PalmTalk for a long time. Can you imagine the benefit Directors get from being able to know what members are saying on PalmTalk? Our moderator has everything you need to get started. He works for the members and is happy to help anyone. Our rules are strict because our members expect us to run…

I am posting this poll in the Discussing Palm Trees Worldwide because it has every thing to do with discussing palm trees worldwide. World wide we are sharing pictures on this forum expecting our pics are our intellectular property. The new terms compromise that breach of faith in my opinion. I am curious of our members opinions!!!

No Longer Pursing Candidacy
by _Keith- 1 follower

This morning, after much thought, I withdrew my name from consideration for the BOD ballot. After reviewing the many posts and recent interactions both public on the forum and in private emails I came to realize that I am not a cultural fit. I would have simply spent the years constantly pushing the leadership in a direction they do not agree is right way to go. Being part of an organization with which I philosophical disagree would have just been stressful for all involved. Between families, and jobs, and most importantly gardens (smiling when I say that) there is only a limited amount of time to volunteer for such non-essential things in life as IPS. I wish to…

To the PalmTalk Community, After giving my future involvement with the IPS considerable thought, I have decided to remove my name from the list of candidates running for the 2014-2018 Director term. I have received a lot of support here on PalmTalk, as well as being nominated by some of you, and I truly appreciate all of this. However, current leadership and I disagree on the future direction of the IPS. It is primarily for this reason that I have decided not to run for the Board again. I would like to add that I am pleased to see that there are a number of incumbent Directors, as well as candidates for the 2014-2018 term, who share my outlook and hope for a Soci…

Disclaimer - This is not sanctioned by the mod, nor the PalmTalk committee. This is NOT a place to bash PT, IPS, or the Mod. This is simple thread for you to list what features or improvements you might like the committee to consider adding to the PT website at some point in the future. Remember the committee has cost and manageability to consider. Not all suggestions may be possible within today's scope of operations. However, if we all help IPS to increase revenue, more things will become possible. If you an avid user of PalmTalk and not an IPS member, that is a great place to start. Join IPS today. If you want to run, here is a BOD Campaign Platform I Could Get Behind First, get over the palm snobbery. We should not be about rare palms, tropical palms, or even limited to palms in general. Think about your palm interest, I bet for almost all of us it encompasses just a part of picture, it is just as much a feeling as it is a thing. We have a lifestyle to share and sell with palms at its center. This will get us the “mass” we need to monetize and survive. Comprehensive marketing and monetization “strategy,” including a single document management platform integrating the IPS website and PT under one umbrella (same site, no more separation, which is partly…

Suggestion to the IPS BOD - Elections
by Dr. George- 16 replies
If the Board of Directors has interest in increasing participation of its members in the process of electing directors, I would suggest that they consider making more use of the IPS website : 1. Require each candidate to submit a candidate statement and post those on a member accessible page linked to the IPS home page. (On a linked page, list all nominees by district, click on nominee name to bring up statement). 2. Add voting on-line as an option for members - easily protected by log-in and password. Additional observation: I notice that the IPS home page has a link to the PalmTalk forum, but the PalmTalk forum does not have an obvious link to the IPS hom…

To the PalmTalk Community, After considerable thought and consideration I have decided to step down as Chair of PalmTalk and also remove myself from the PalmTalk Committee and I have sent an email to this effect to Leland Lai, the President of the IPS, and the entire Board of Directors. I have had this responsibility for the past seven years, and I have worked closely with Dean Ouer, our Moderator, and the rest of the Committee, during this time. I have truly enjoyed this opportunity, and it’s been very satisfying for me to see how PalmTalk has grown and evolved over these years. I am a firm believer in accountability and transparency, and during my tenure as Pre…
