Some pictures of Oahu, HI
by MattyB- 20 replies

I've got tons of pictures for you guys from my trip to Hawaii. I've got to break it down into several threads. We'll start with a few shots around Oahu (don't worry Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden will be it's own thread). We stayed with Jennifer's Aunt in Hawaii Kai which is about 20 minutes south east of Honolulu. Lot's of houses are on waterways there with their back yards opening out to docks so they can launch their canoes or boats right there. Upon our arrival Jen's Aunt suggested that we take a hike up a ridge on the southern most point of the island just a few minutes away from her house. Here, there's a light house and we saw humpback whales in the water. …

Road Trip
by iwan- 28 replies

Finally catching up a little bit after a 10 day 1302 mile (2038km) road trip. I didn't take a lot of pictures (except for the trip to Quail BG, which will be in a separate thread). This trip as it was very whirlwind, packing way more than was practical into each day. It was not uncommon to get back to the hotel around 11PM. Day 1: Leave home, drive to Costa Mesa for the sale at Tropical Vibe. Left a couple hours later with seven palms. Then, off to a non-plant side trip to Oceanside, followed by a quick trip PogoBob's place to admire his Syagrus Abre Ojos specimen (and collect some seeds, thanks Bob)! Got down to San Diego after dark. Day 2: Balboa park. Of…

After planning for over a year, I am finally leaving to Madagascar next Saturday for a full month. I am going to meet up with Bruno and travel as much of the country as possible. I hope to have lots of pictures, stories, etc... when I return May 12th. I can't imagine actually going to my number one destination after all these years dreaming of going there. Gary

Lake Park

Hi all, I went to my wife's company picnic today and had to find something to entertain myself so I took some pictures. Not a large variety of palms, really just one species, but at least there are some of the trunking variety of this palm - yeh, I forgot its scientific name, but they are common and native. Blue on the east coast I believe. Anyway, enjoy!

I thought this was a very cool photograph from way back in 1919. Pretty impressive if I say so. I found this picture on the internet, so Kudos to the original photographer.

The Road To Serra Bonita
by amazondk- 30 replies

I flew up to Boa Vista, Roraima on Monday on business. I have been making this trip a lot lately either by car or plane. The hour plane flight takes you across the equator and into another climate and vegetation zone. The area around Boa Vista (2.85 North Lattitude) is savana vegetation called Campos Lavrados. The mountains nearby are in a transition zone from this drier land to the Amazonian forest in all directions. On Tuesday I was at a town 40 kms from Boa Vista where some of our suppliers have operations and took advantage of the late afternoon sun to explore the area. Here on the equator the sun always goes down around 6 PM and the twilight time is short. But…

Land Search
by RainForestt Robert- 8 replies
The search for land on a small island is extremely frustrating. After taking family, work, commute and money available into consideration I can't afford much land that would be attached to single family dwelling. Our present home (uncompleted) is on just 5500 sq feet. The footprint of the house takes up most of the yard. No room for a bismarckia ! The cost of land is escalating dramatically. Ours appreciated over 100 percent in the last 3 years. And the cost of construction has also doubled. (Did I say the house is not finished?) Townhouses, almost unheard of a few years ago are sprouting up all over. Meanwhile, there is a 3/4 acre empty lot next to me, owne…

San Diego Trip
by jrod- 4 replies
I know this probably isn't anything special to most of the people from the forum but these are some pictures I took from a recent trip to San Diego. I kept looking around for different varieties but the majority of palms were Queens, Chamaerops, Washingtonia, and Phoenix species. I was with a group, so i was unable to go to some of the places I wanted but maybe next time. Most of the pictures were taken at Balboa Park. The majority are of palms but there are others in there also. Check them out.

Tired of Cocos?
by Dypsisdean- 19 replies

Occasionally, I go with a local family to one of the plush resorts on the Kona coast where some of them work, for a Sunday buffet. Unlike the other world class resorts here, the Kona Village is built in the old Hawaiian style, with single hales (bungalows) on the pristine coastline, or surrounding the many lagoons in the area. No phones, no TVs, no pavement, and no noise. However, there are lots of coco palms, and some beautiful old Hawaiian scenes. Here are a few to enjoy. Registration Buffet Hale And the Grounds

Palms, Hotels or other Places
by amazondk- 37 replies

It would be interesting to see the landscape designs and ideas for swimming pools in hotels or other places around the world. This what I think is the best one in our area. It is the Tropical Business Hotel at the Ponta Negra in Manaus. Of any urban place that I know this is one of the most beautiful. A lot of Bactris gasipaes are used. This is a great local palm for our climate. Tropical Business Hotel Manaus View from back of hotel toward the Ponta Negra Blvd. Tropical Business Hotel lookng up from the back Bactris gasipaes.

Rainforest Meets The Beach
by RainForestt Robert- 12 replies

Last weekend I took a short trip to Trinidad's most popular beach, Maracas. It is only about 20 minutes from the Capital, Port of Spain, reached along the North Coast Road. It is very scenic. I took a couple of shots along the way. This photo is taken from a lookout where almost everyone stops for a photo op, purchase a souvenir or stock up on supplies or to participate in one of our favorite exercises, bending the elbow (taking a drink!)
