join mattyb & paul(pohonkelapa) on their latest adventure as they discover the vast richness of southern florida, from verdant farmlands to the miami beach strip, from palm collectors dream-nurseries to spectacular private gardens! matt gets snarly before intra-continental flights. while paul is contemplative. or just not awake yet. just to prove we were in atlanta.there we met an airport employee who "out-jeebused" matt. he was appropriately chastened.

Dick Douglas garden 1 2 3 4

Last weekend I had the opportunity to tour Dick's garden. This is the most mature private palm garden that I have toured (outside of the tropics) and is an excellent example of a California zone 9 hardy garden. In spite of our brutal freeze in January and another freeze last December with lows down to the low 20's, very few of Dicks palms show any damage or even signs of stress. A lot of the palms have been in the garden 30-40+ years. The layout reminds me of a small scale version of the Huntington Botanical Garden with grass (Dick said they were irregated weeds) pathways leading you through islands of palms. --------------------- You will know Dick as PalmGu…

The Costa Rica Palm Society held a meeting at Wilson Botanical Garden this past weekend. The garden is located near the town of San Vito up in the mountains near the border with Panama at about 1,100 meters (3,609 ft). The OTS (Organization for Tropical Studies) aquired Wilson Botanical Garden in 1973 as part of Las Cruces Biological Station. The Wilson's began planting the garden in 1962 and remained on the property until they passed away in the mid and late 1980's. This is an amazing place with a vast collection of mature palms and other tropical plants from around the world. I immediately fell in love with this garden and can't wait to go back again. Some p…

THere is a local plant show this coming weekend. Its being held by the Horticultural society so its all types of plants. I was in the area so I deided to pass by. THere is usually a display with booths of the different plant clubs to showcase their stuff but they were still setting up so I couldn't go in that area just to see what was going on. Some of the commercial booths were already set up though-- and sometimes they put on a display to rival the formal exhibits. Couldn't really buy anything yet though but there were a few interesting plants I already spotted that I had to come back for. Here are some shots I was able to take. More to come when/if I get…

Hi sports fans, ah...palm fans...ah fan palms ? , um........ anyway, I took nearly 500 pics over 4 days from our (Donna and I) wedding anniversary trip to Cairns which we returned from this afternoon to a swamped Brisbane town. I'll just set up a few teasers for now and approach this thread more over the next couple of days. I was very happy to meet Mikey (calyptrocalyx&licuala freck) in person for the first time, Mikey is a self confessed Calyptrocalyx nutter and there's nothing he'd like better than to see wall to wall Calyptrocalyx junked up next to each other. Thanks Mikey for a fab time. Okay, here's just a couple for tonight. Day one, a drive up to Port D…

I spent a week in Florida in July. Vacation in Florida in July? The heat and humidity was nothing compared to what I experienced in Washington, DC years ago and I do live in the Caribbean. This was a family vacation, wife and kids in tow. Most of our time was spent shopping, a fact which Jeff Searle found incredible. No PRAs? Well, we did check out the palms at the Miami Zoo and had a quick look at the Searle Brothers Nursery before fire and brimestone, no thunder, lightning and torrential rain fell from the heavens. So a couple of days before it was time to leave Jeff offered to give up his Sunday rest and relaxation for a trip to Fairchild's Tropical Botanic Gard…

Zo. Where to begin? This leg of my Africa Adventure was an afterthought. That may shock you, but it's true. All my energy and planning had gone into my Mt. Kilimanjaro hike, but when it came to make the flight arrangements, that little island to the right of Africa kept begging for my attention. "It's just a little over that way," I'd tell Steve, Mr. Non-Palm-Centric-Husband. "If we've already traveled halfway around the world, how can we NOT go there? It's a unique ecosystem, nothing else like it in the world." Indeed. Nothing Else Like It In The World... So a few thousand dollars later, it's on the itinerary. Do not be deceived; it is not simple to fly t…

Steph and I just got back from another working vacation at our place on the big island of Hawaii and while I did plant some palms and stuff a lot of our focus was carving trails and taking out invasive plants in the back half of our acre. I was able to hack out a nice trail to the back of our property and clear out some other areas for planting. Bo again hooked me up with some VERY NICE plants and here is the list of the palms and others I was able to plant when I was'nt swinging the machete. Dypsis Decipiens 5 gal. Dypsis Oropedionis 5 gal. Dypsis Rivularis "pink crown" 1 gal. Dypsis Onilahensis 1 gal. Dypsis "clumping mystery" 1 gal. Marojejya Darianii 5 gal. 2- …

Last week after 2 weeks in Phuket Thailand for rest, relaxation and recovery we headed to Singapore for 4 days. 2 of the 4 days I spent at the recently opened "Gardens By The Bay", I enjoyed this remarkable, stunning creation so much more than I anticipated, I will for sure travel back in a few years to marvel at the growth of all the newly planted palms and to stare and enjoy the well over ONE MILLION Bromeliads that are everywhere. There are around 10 massive Tree like steel structures that have Bromeliads attached all over them. Two of these structures are connected by a Sky Walk to each other, I would guess these walkways are easy 40 meters high, its an "Awesome" …
