Is this huge difference in tempatures in Coastal Southern California and Inland Southern California from the ocean and the mountains? How high are these mountains? Every time I look at a tempature map of the U.S. I see how much cooler it is in Coastal California than Inland California, which I know is a desert. Does Coastal California ever seem chilly out at some times around this time of year? Out of curiosity I sometimes compare tempatures of here and places like San Diego or Los Angeles and a lot of the time it is warmer here (during the day) in the Spring time. For people who live in these places, what does it feel like out? It looks like Southern California has all k…

The Australian Tropical Cyclone season has got off to a flying start with number 1 in the Indian Ocean - TC Alenga. Currently Cat. 3 but expected to weaken and dissipate before reaching the WA coast. One likely side effect may be to draw down the monsoon trough which is somewhere over Indonesia at the moment.

February Freeze? 1 2 3

The long range for Feb is below normal in the eastern 2/3 except for the far upper midwest/rockies where above normal is expected. Precip is to be above normal. Here in Tampa Bay it is CHILLY yet again, today. In the 50's, overcast (el nino overcast) and breezy, so it is COLD~ The rains of the past week have largely missed me, thankfully, and about an inch fell total while some areas to my north got 3"+. In freeze recovery, heavy rains are not a good idea. While no arctic banger is to be expected, consistenly chilly air is. I hope some warm air gets by in between. I've been here well over 20 years and I have never seen back to back winters like these! Freeze damage is eve…

Looks to turn into a Hurricane, hit Cuba and then drift into the Gulf, although the models are all over the place, so who knows what will happen. Might impact Florida by Saturday or Sunday.

Jealous of Europe's Weather 1 2 3

Can you imagine what palm-growing conditions would be like in the American South if we had a tall range of east-west mountains (like the Alps) separating Texas through to the Carolinas from south-driving arctic blasts AND if the gulf stream warmed America's coast the way it now warms Wester Europe? Check out this map that shows where European cities are situated relative to American locations of the same latitude. They're growing palms and citrus in Spain, parts of France, Italy, Greece, Turkey, etc., but Jacksonville Florida, which is across from Africa, is too cold for commercial citrus production! 'Tis unfair. http://mapsontheweb.zoom-maps.com/post/125519562883/map-of-…

This thread is to discuss the possibility of a Florida freeze in the month of December 2020. Mike’s Weather Page posted the below graph on Facebook earlier today of forecast low temperatures for December 26th: If this plays out, much of central and north Florida will see their first freeze this winter. Forecast accuracy 9 days out is notoriously poor so at this juncture it’s just something to keep an eye on.

On the interactive USDA map I found a small area that is zone 10a in Louisiana. I know many people disagree with the map, but I just find this interesting. Does anyone know if any coconuts or any other 10a palms or plants in general are grown there? Is it just forest? Take a look.

The 2014 El Nino could be a record monster El Nino, experts predict. See http://www.motherjones.com/environment/2014/04/this-years-el-nino-could-grow-monster. Global warming is in full swing, and this monster is only going to contribute to more record warmth. It's gonna be a scorching hot Summer out West, and it's gonna be a warm wet Winter as well. Predictions of the nasty El Nino have already affected the Indian stock market, stay tuned, could be some serious carnage out there.

So where did our beloved El Nino go? Apparently the SST conditions have dropped below El Nino and the NWS has recently dropped the chance of an El Nino to 60%. This does not bode well for drought relief and would also explain why an even more Easterly pattern to the polar vortexes is expected. This means even less rain in California but at least freezes will be well to the East of the rockies. http://www.vox.com/2014/8/13/5994771/scientists-were-expecting-a-monster-el-nino-this-year-so-where-did-it

I wanted to continue Ray's, Potential for Florida Freeze in January thread. It's a new month but we still have several more weeks of possible cold weather. About ten days out but I saw this model for Thursday, February 11. Lots of cold air pouring down to the Gulf and Florida.

Starting off the month cold and wet in Louisiana. Drizzled all day yesterday, woke up to rain and 40 degrees. Will top out today around 55. Its been a wet fall and early winter here. Reminds me all too much of those cold wet winters that were common back when I grew up. You could wear all the layers you wanted and an over coat, but the moisture just went right through them the minute you walked out the door. Used to make my teeth chatter. The last two warm decades have hardly given us the opportunity to wear winter clothes here. But I just got this gut feel this one is gonna be different. I sure want to be wrong.

I thought I’d start a new topic seeing that we technically are no longer in winter. However September down here still feels like winter but with some warm days stuck in amongst the wet cold weather. It’s actually quite a teaser really, especially after such a wet winter. I’m waiting for the place to dry out but have already started planting new things out, some R sapida, Archontophoenix and Pandanus furcatus and Ficus macrophylla. But winter is dragging its heels and I’ve lost or am losing things to root rot. I’ve got water pooling in areas that were basically bone dry in winters past. Just gotta learn from the experience I suppose.

It sounds ridiculous with such warm weather around but the NAO and AO will be very negative in a week or so. With the lagging effects usually arriving a week or two later, the potential is there for a significant freeze in Florida. I haven't seen these two teleconnections look like this simultaneously since January 2010. Of course if there's limited cold air in Canada, it doesn't matter what the pattern looks like. All I can say is the door will be wide open. Keep an eye on the upcoming forecasts. Hopefully nothing will come of it.

What do you think of this zone map?

I think it might be a bit generous, but the colors at least make it very easy to differentiate zones. http://www.plantmaps.com/interactive-california-usda-plant-zone-hardiness-map.php

Dec 2013 California Freeze Watch 1 2 3 4

So at to not mislead folks in Southern California, I am going to use this thread to post daily updates from the various meteorological sources on next week's forecasted Yukon Express which is now going to affect mostly Central and Northern California. This is not a 2007 repeat. Socal NWS calls for threats of hard freezes in Southern California's upper deserts and far inland valleys, but it's not likely that Southern California's coastal zones will experience anything worse than maybe a few degrees below 45F. At least that's what the current forecasts are saying. As of Saturday Morning, the GFS has the bulk of the energy aimed over inland Central California, with a rap…

Brownsville Climate 1 2 3

Texas, being a big state, has a wide range of climates. You have arid towards the west, subtropical towards the east, colder temps north, and warmer temps south. For a long time I’ve been questioning Köppen’s classification for Brownsville / Eastern Cameron county. At NOAA’s averages for this area, we fall into a subtropical climate. Now, what troubles me is the plain, visible differences in the vegetation of Brownsville/surrounding areas to that of areas outside of the lower RGV. For those that have visited/ are natives to this area, it’s clear that Brownsville is visibly a lot more tropical that most areas of the Valley outside of the Lower Valley. Once you leave north …
