Similarities between S Fl and Hawaii 1 2

I'm a native Floridian (hence my name) and have always been a weather buff. When I look at weather in HI and S Fl I notice a lot of similarities. Temps are similar with highs in the upper 70s to upper 80s. Lows are generally in the 60s and 70s--except for the FL cold snaps . Also, the wind in both places seems to be from the E to NE a good part of the time. In Hawaii they are called Trade winds. Are not these perisitent E-NE winds in S Florida also Tradewinds--even though they are more frequently interrupted by cold fronts in Winter?

The long range forecast for winter in the Great Southern Land. It looks like my coconut is safe this winter, which is good as I can't protect it much any more as it's too big. http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ahead/rain_ahead.shtml http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/ahead/temps_ahead.shtml

Cool overnight showery start to Spring here. Days are glorious as per, and it looks like some rains end of the week and beginning of next so all in all, a great start. May this be a bountiful palm quarter.

Spring has sprung, the grass is riz. I wonder where the birdies is ? Well I dont have to wonder, one is dangling from my ear trying to admire my dental work and the other is swinging on the chandalier squawking his version of the love boat. What is it about this part of the world.....the calender flips over to september and its like a switch going on that ignites the warm season. Today is glorious....warm, sunny , gentle breeze. There's little green shoots on the shrubs, palm spears opening up all over the place and every bauhinia in town is covered in flowers all of a sudden. Time to slap on the 30 plus and to get outside .....always a busy time of year for we of the…

Mid November looks a bit chilly if the models are correct! Looks a bit suspicious getting that cold this early.

Last summer was at the height of one of the strongest La Nina [cooling of the eastern tropical Pacific ocean] in history. The California coast as well as the Pacific Northwest experienced record cool conditions [i.e. San Diego coolest summer ever] due to ocean temps up to 10 degrees F below normal. Not a happy time for palm growers near the beach. La Nina is over but residual cooling remains along the West Coast. Noted climatologist, Dr Patzert of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, is predicting a cooler than normal summer http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/home_blog/2011/05/la-storm-watch.html Keep in mind that Patzert also predicted a very dry rain year when i…

Well I thought I’d start a new thread. I’m looking forward to a good growing season this year. Spring isn’t really here yet, but winter is slowly releasing its grip. By the equinox things start to really improve. Today is cloudy with rain returning tomorrow. A min of 12.5C this morning with a top of 18C forecast. The garden knows spring is upon us soon. The deciduous trees are in bud burst with the grapevines swelling there buds. My Rhopies, Howeas, and Archontophoenix are all opening spears in anticipation. Bring it on.

What is your soil temperature?

I found a University of Florida Agricultural site that gives Air Temperature at 2 meters and then soil temperature at 10 centimeters. The closest I could find to me was at Ft.Lauderdale, which reported air temperature at 80 F.and soil temperature(10 cm)at 73F.Arcadia,Fl was the highest soil I found at 74F. Apopka,fl(central Florida)reported 73F and North Florida at Marianna,Fl.reported 65F with an air temperature of 68F. I am certain that this is an important aspect of tropical plant and palm culture.Any idea what your soil temperature is?

While folks in SE Florida are swimming in rain, the west central area hasn't seen much rain since the calendar changed to 2023. I don't see much relief in the short term.

Winter Weather Threat - February 2011 1 2 3 4

Hi all: I wanted to create this thread, with the correct year, as a continuation to the January thread. A few weeks ago, I had posted about the models latching-on to a possible outbreak of very cold arctic air spilling down the plains. Although the models were consistent, they were questionable as the cold air that was needed never really built-up in Canada as depicted. It's very common for the GFS to show some scary scenario 10-14 days away but the cold air needed to make it all happen is lacking. We have had the two fronts come down, and while very chilly, it's nothing record-breaking. Still - it's been below freezing at my house now for about 12 hours so this …

Cyclone Anthony came ashore last night around Bowen as a Cat 2 cyclone. Next in line is Cyclone Yasi which looks to be the big one for the year. Here is a projected path track: http://www.usno.navy.mil/NOOC/nmfc-ph/RSS/jtwc/warnings/sh1111.gif Good luck to everyone up the coast. Bruce Fallbrook/ Childers

Are locations in California "frost-free"? 1 2

Desmond Muirhead's book on Palm's reported that freezing temperatures had been recorded on the pier at Santa Catalina Island and accordingly no location in California could be considered "frost-free".The discussion on this board suggests that their are many micro-climates in California that are "frost-free".Where are the micro-climates in California that may be most suitable for the growing of coconut palms?

I figured with a cool down already happening and forecast to continue into the rest of October this is more relevant than October would suggest. My forecast high next Tuesday is 72 and that's not far off from "winter". El nino is making an appearance too, so the peninsula already has a severe weather threat with the current system. Models are forecasting the whole eastern US as cooler than average again for the month. My hope is that the pattern does not set up to be cold and cloudy all winter but I'll take clouds if it means no freezes this season. What does everyone do to prepare for an El nino winter, if anything?

Keep your head on a swivel (as Ron Burgundy suggests). More talk of the cold stuff coming down yet again. From NWS: "....A SECOND PUSH OF COLD AIR MOVES IN BY FRIDAY AS STRONG HIGH PRESSURE DROPS INTO THE NORTHERN GULF OF MEXICO. THIS AIRMASS COULD BE COLDER THAN WE ARE CURRENTLY ADVERTISING...ESPECIALLY IF THE HIGH SETTLES OVER THE EASTERN GULF AND FLORIDA PENINSULA SATURDAY MORNING AS CURRENT GUIDANCE IS SUGGESTING. WILL KEEP TEMPS SEVERAL DEGREES ABOVE GUIDANCE FOR NOW AND WAIT FOR FUTURE RUNS TO CONFIRM THE COLDER SCENARIO." Ray

April Weather Thread 1 2 3

...hemispheres that is... Anyway, what is going on where you are? California? Australia? England? South Africa? New Zealand? Anyone? A summertime pattern of daytime heat and humidty followed by evening thunderstorms is in place right now. Last day of March and first 2 days of April have seen widespread showers and thunderstorms across the southern 2/3 of FL. Actually kinda' strange to have this pattern so early. Could the weather be forshadowing a nasty hurricane season ??? Palms are loving this spring so far and I like this weather as long as it lasts but I am sure we will have an extended dry spell coming before the real summer rain pattern sets in.

USDA Hardiness zone is not a good way to have a abstract view on minimum temperatures 1 2
by greekpalm- 1 follower

USDA hardiness zone is calculated by the average annual minimum. I know that temperature is not the only factor that kills palms in the winter.... but lets take extract only the temperature factor. I consider is a bad way to calculate someones minimum climatic temperature. let see the following example year 1: -4C year 2: 3C year 3: 5C year 4: 4C year 5: 4C so this would mean that the average annual minimum would be 2.4C or hardiness zone 10b If someone plants a 10b palm would be fine for a couple of years until that one cold year will strike back (in our example -4C which would correspond to hardiness zone 8b) and the palm will fry! As many palm lovers have se…

http://raleighwx.easternuswx.com/models/gf...nomalyNA216.gif This is a model outlook West Coast meteorologists are looking at. A strong high pressure system sets up over Alaska & descending winds usher in a very cold airmass over Nevada. This is the type of dynamics that can bring us a serious freeze [comes in the "back door" without the benefit of the Pacific ocean to warm the air mass like in 1990 & 2007]. This model is well over a week away & things can change considerably so it is too early to panic. Ten days out is considered a "marginal" forecast. Stay tuned

Well we all hate this season, but how is it going in your part of the world. We started with a 26C day, then the next we had thunderstorms and some heavy rain then it cleared by noon and got to 24C. This morning I woke to a cloud forest in my garden, with mist and thick fog in the canopy and water condensing and running off everything. The palms are springing open new leaves everywhere. Best regards Tyrone

European winter 2016/2017 1 2

What will this winter bring in Europe this time? Please post what is happening over at your place this winter. The last few winters were really mild for us here in northern Europe, so hard to get even milder winters. Winter 2013/2014 was even frostfree for me, last two winters had some frosty moments but mostly around -1C for a few hours exept, beside a few nights which were colder. This november has been quite average and had some frost as well, last weekend I recorded -3 and -4 and also this weekend looks a bit frosty. Long term is evolving again to a mild episode with temperatures in the double figures, it is however impossible to beat the last year mediter…

Got some much needed rain today, nice frontal band quenched many a thirsty garden in the state, central part on down. Other than a few cold episodes, the entire state has had a pretty decent winter. Come Spring, things should be cranking!

Autumn/Spring that time again 1 2 3 4

Well, no one was going to put this up, so i thought I should. What's happening in your neck of the woods? Here it is still summer, but as Bob Dylan said "times they are a changin' " Still hot here, but March is warmer than December anyway, so nothing unusual there. Maybe rain tomorrow morning and a mild 29C. How delightful. The moisture that comes out of the air and sky is always welcome here. Even looks like a cold front may come within 1000km of us in a few days which is nice. We haven't seen one of those since about winter 2009. Here's a report on our heat spell, which reminds me. I should put some potash on my Heliconia rostratas this arvo. Maybe the …
