January 17th 2019 Heatwave Summary Thursday, January 17th 2019 Heatwave Summary Another day of ridiculous heat has come to a close across large parts of Inland Australia. Today was largely dominated by Northern and North East SA, South West QLD and a huge chunk of Inland NSW. Another 2 locations have tipped the 48ºc mark – both new locations for this heatwave. 14 locations have hit 47ºc today, 24 above 46ºc and 35 above 45ºc. Hi all, I have seen several growing zone maps from all these different sources over the years and yet, none has felt right for my area. Most recently, there was a map posted over on the CFPACS board that really blew it for the Tampa Bay area. So, I decided to make my own zone map! No, it is not based upon any kind of hard data only empirical evidence of what is seen growing in the Bay area and a little bit of "gut feeling". I think this could be a fun project for many people to try to do if they want to make a very localized zone map outlining suspected and known micro climates - hot and cold. It would be cool to dedicate a sub forum, not unlike the freeze forum to custom…

Some scary stuff in the forecast for the midwest coming up, looking like the type of stuff that showed up in the movie "The Day After Tomorrow". Snow is falling now during the Summer in the highlands of NSW and Victoria in Australia: Here is the latest sun spot activity in what is supposed to be a maximum: What the heck? Are we off to a mini ice age?

According to my weather station, the coldest it got was 24.1ºF on the night of this past Thursday. Thanks to my microclimate, we stayed a few degrees warmer than what was reported from downtown and near the airport.

It won't quite be the 2010/11 freeze we had, but it is a 10 year freeze event. I have been bringing in in potted plants, and trying to decide what action, if any to take on others. I will let quite a few of them go. I am really on the fence about whether to brings in those 6 new Mules, still in pots. The are all tucked together, with bags of Oak Leaves piled around them. Still they are investment I don't want to loose, not even one of them. But, they are kind of large. So far the wife is amenable to sharing the home for a few days. This is our latest forecast. Trending is still going downward. How are you looking for the Big Freeze of 2014?

Which Weather Phenomenon Do You Fear Most: Frosts/Freezes or Tropical Cyclones' Aftermath?

It looks as though nature (or Divine Providence) is sparing the Miami-Lauderdale, FL area "Is-Aye-Ee-Ahs" That is a nice way to begin August! I guess that this is a temporary "reprieve" though as the next 60-70 days are a virtual shooting gallery in the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico! I wish all our palm-loving, palm nurturing & growing members the very best of wishes (and freedom from bad storms) during this stressful season ahead. It kind of makes up a portion of my mind that asks itself: "what do I most fear as a threat to keeping my palmy landscape intact?" Is in tropical cyclone season, or is it winter with it's potentially fatal, or at least damagi…

Drought conditions have worsened dramatically in the last few weeks, with higher temps and breezy days. There was supposed to be a 60% chance of thunderstorms today, but so far, sunny and windy. Below is an excerp from todays SunSentinel. "The South Florida Water Management District's new restrictions for residential and business use in Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and monroe counties. It goes into effect March 22: Landscape irrigation and maintenance for homes with under five acres Watering permitted Monday, Wednesday and Saturday from 4-8 a.m. for addresses ending in an odd number. Watering permitted Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday for addresses ending in an…

Well I thought I'd start this thread as no one else was going too. It's summer in the south, the time for us all to rejoice down here, because we've been looking forward too it for so long. Northern posters can post too, but I think there are many cold winter threads already, but this thread is not an exclusive warm south thread either. Well here in Perth we missed everything from the big tropical low that dumped 207mm in 24hrs on Carnarvon and 112mm in 24hrs on Shark Bay. Carnarvon is under water and it shut the NW Coastal Hwy for 300km due to flash flooding risk. Just last month I was up in this area and stopped at the Murchison River crossing on the NW Coastal Hwy …

I just thought I should have this dam title here and ready for tomorrow.... As I sit here listening to the wind howling, (with up to 40mph predicted today) and forecasts of 29 on Friday night and 26 and 27 on sun and Monday night..

California, Arizona,Texas and Florida consistently are the States with the Highest Maximum Winter temperature.November 29,2007 Fort Myers,Florida was reported as having the highest temperature in the Continental US.That is interesting because I saw Cocoa Beach reporting 90 degrees F.around 3:00PM.I also think the Highest Low would be interesting.I think Key West took that yesterday with 76 degrees F.Any States challenge these numbers?

New USDA plant hardiness zone map 1 2

Washington Post. This has been a big problem for the USDA. A few years ago, they contracted the American Horticultural Society to revise the plant hardiness map, and the results displeased a lot of users who thought that nudging the zones northward wasn't justified. The new map was done by Oregon State University, which has done a huge amount of work on mapping American climate. USDA. USDA eagerly points out that the map isn't intended to validate climate change. There's just vastly more data available than when the previous map was released in 1990. My place seems to have just barely sneaked into zone 10A. And St Petersburg, too??

So far, so good here.... Forecast for mid-high 70'sf day, mid 50's - low 60's night and very little rain.

Well, It looks like this summer is going to be a scorcher. Yesterday, Xmas day was 41C, the hottest Xmas reading since 1968, but today it has just reached 43.4C which is a record here for December. Even Garden Island, a few km's off shore has reached 43C, which must be a record. It's hard keeping humidity up in this situation. So how hot have others got this southern summer? regards Tyrone

This thread is to discuss potential Florida freezes during the heart of winter this January through February 2021. At the moment, it is looking like the polar vortex over the north pole will be broken up and possibly swing farther south as guidance and computer models are showing this possibility around Mid January. Not trying to incite doom- just a trend to watch right now as much can still change. These are meteorologists I follow on Twitter who are knowledgeable on the subject.

We have had a wet start to June here. 140mm (5 1/2 ") over the last couple of days. Good for the garden, and enjoying the warm night temperatures. I just hope we don't go straight into a clear cold dry spell when it finishes. Daryl

I have lived in both FL and TX for over 5 years each, been all over both states. Have seen what grows in both places, and have studied the climate records for both states. So I have come up with a little comparison between the 2 states. My comparison is what 2 cities/areas are nearly identical or closely match both palm wise and climate wise. See if you agree with my comparisons, or tell me where I am wrong. San Antonio/Houston = Jacksonville. I looked up climate records and did comparisons for averages for SA and Jax. They are nearly identical, about as close as you can get. The average overall yearly temp in SA is 1F higher than Jax. With Summer in SA being …

Not much to report here in Louisiana, other than still no rains and conditions nearing treacherous. I have seen a couple of large mature trees dying. It is that dry.

Hello, I was just reading the worst freezes thead and ran accross Darnell's Dictum. Anyway, what plants define a USDA zone? What should I be looking for? How can you know how old the defining plants are? For example, I live in the boonies and there are very few interesting palms planted. I guess the farmers that owned the land here previously were not interested in Royal palms, Coconuts etc. However, there are large "groves" of bananas around with fruit, large Ficus elastica trees - the largest being about 50' in height just accross the street in an old home's front yard. Several other smaller 'weeping fig' trees maybe to the largest being 30-40' in height. There are c…

After a warm October, this morning it was 2°C/36°F, but many places were predicting a freeze here, so I guess I should be happy with that. It is probably the end of the growing season for this year, although it will be interesting to see if my Musa sikkimensis stops straight away, as it has still been growing at a reasonable speed until now. We are forecast sub zero temperatures for the next two nights, so I would be surprised to see anymore growth, especially as the daytime temperatures are also supposed to be quite low. I mulched most of the outside plants yesterday, due to the forecast, so hopefully everything will cope OK, although it may come as a bit of a shock…

In recent years southern England, Western France, Belgium and the Netherlands have experienced pretty bad droughts from April - August, and this year is on course for the same again. That will be the 3rd consecutive year that this has happened. It's extremely dry here already. The ground is totally parched and it is dust down to about an inch. My last measurable rainfall was over 3 weeks ago now and that was only 0.04 inches. In total I have only received 0.31 inches of rainfall over the past 10 weeks. There certainly doesn't appear to be any rainfall on the horizon either, which begs the question of how long will this current drought last? Until July? August? Septe…

Normally I don't post weather concerns on the main forum but believe all California gardeners should take measures to protect palms from wind damage. An incredible amount of rainfall will occur this week like we haven't experience since 2005. Our normal "yearly" rainfall totals may be reached in this coming week. ...SPECIAL WEATHER STATEMENT... ...EXTENDED PERIOD OF SIGNIFICANT RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW NEXT WEEK FOR SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA... A STORMY PATTERN IS SETTING UP ACROSS THE EASTERN PACIFIC OCEAN THAT WILL BRING PERIODS OF MODERATE TO HEAVY RAIN AND MOUNTAIN SNOW TO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA MOST OF NEXT WEEK AND POSSIBLY INTO THE FOLLOWING WEEK.
