12 year drought in Australia
by John Case- 7 replies
- 1.4k views
During halftime in tonights struggle between the Dallas Cowboys and the Washington Redskins, a reporter from our country, standing in front of the Sydney Opera House, reported the following: 1) Australia is in a drought that is now 12 years old, probably due to global warming. Now if she was so concerned about GW, I assume she made the trip from California to Australia in a rowboat. 2) She reported that the icecap on Mt. Kilamanjaro was melting giving problems to the residents in Tanzania (obviously a state in Australia) in the matter of flooding. This was in the next sentence. So we now have global warming causing drought and flooding simultaneously. 3) She …

Awoke this morning to the kitty cat burrowed under the covers, snug and comfy in a cold house. Outside, it got down to 32 F in the upper part of my yard, and 28.6 in the lower part. Cold, but no damage. The tender stuff had been covered up. How about the rest of you?

1780 Barbados Hurricane/Earthquake ?
by bubba- 2 replies
The October 1780 Barbados Hurricane was one of the most vicious ever recorded. Wind speeds were calculated at over 200 MPH and the entire island was defoliated. The bulk of the British Fleet was stationed in the Barbados and was destroyed but this Hurricane went on to destroy a large part of the British Fleet in other places in the Carribean ( Cuba, Martinique,Saint Lucia...). It was almost like a heat seeking missile. This Hurricane almost in one swoop ended British Naval dominance over the Atlantic. In the Barbados during the worst of this Hurricane, there were reports of an earthquake. This claim seemed to be simply too outlandish. However, new scientific res…

As Yesterday was the 120th anniversary of the 1899 arctic outbreak I thought I would link to this 1988 abstract detailing the event. It also touches on the arctic outbreaks of Jan 1982 and Jan 1985 at the end of the paper. Obviously it was written a year to early to include the outbreak of 1989 that I remember witnessing the aftermath of that February while visiting the Stuart area during my winter break in high school. 1985 in Florida
by Bill H2DB- 2 replies

Here are my records from 1985 . While the '83 freeze was quite bad ,this seems to me to have been more devastating in total effect . This set the ALL TIME low in Daytona Beach , and then matched the previous All time low on the following day . About 95% of the Queen palms in this area died , and about 75% of the Washingtonias as well. There were no green Citrus trees visible along US27 ( which passes down through the heart of the industry), until well south of Frostproof . Virtually every Australian Pine , Silk Oak ,Mangrove etc , regardless of size died.

2007 California Freeze repeat in the long term forecast
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

Before you freak out, read the post, right now it's not likely we're gonna get another 2007, but it's worth being vigilant and checking on the long term forecasts. The weather has me concerned this year. The drought hasn't broken, and there's no signs of any decent strong onshore jet stream over the West coast. Instead we have a meandering jet stream with a lot of amplified patterns with cut-off lows dancing with a stubborn East Pacific high. This is a bad, bad sign for the West Coast, such a pattern can easily spew out the right conditions for a Yukon express. We all need to pray for a strong pineapple express. The 9 day 850mb GFS is showing a pretty strong Yuco…

2007 To Be The Hottest Year?
by Scott- 6 replies
If this is redundant, I'm sorry. As most already know, it's forecasted to be hotter than last year. But taking into consideration the 117F local conditions last year, and this is going to be felt worldwide - so they say - couldn't this push even heat loving palms to the limits? And the predictions of dwindling snowcaps and decreasing water supply, and the inevitable power outages. (a swealtering emoticon would go good here) I'm just curious, what are some of you doing to prepare for this, if anything? For your palms and yourselves. Perhaps some ready-to-go sun-cloth shade structure that is removable. I've tried working this out, thinking wise. Has anybody else? M…

This has been an interesting year. Last year,California got the cold air. This year,Florida did.Can Texas be far behind? Louisiana and Arizona were also warmer than normal. The High temperature per Weather Underground for Dec was Alice,Tx on Dec.27,2008 at 93F.For Jan.,Santa Ana,Ca was 90F on the 12th.For Feb.,Edinburg,Tx was 93F on the 13th.California showed up in a big way, especially from Jan.11-22.They had a run of highs from 90 to the upper 80's during that time frame.South Texas is just unbelievable for Winter MH's with upper 80's to low 90's a day or two after a cold front.Florida can jump into MH only when a cold front hits Texas and it is cool in California allo…

2009 Year in Review

I figured a topic like this would be starting up soon enough, so I went ahead and started it. 2009 has been a dry year for me, as of today, only ~43" of rain. The absolute low wasnt too terrible at 31.3F (2/5/2009) with 1 hr and 5 minutes below the freezing point. But, the winter months were actually well below normal in average temperature. Yearly stats from my weather station from Weatherunderground---- http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstation...;graphspan=year NOAA weather data summary attached.

Something not usually extensively shared and discussed on palmtalk. Kind of an observatory, sharing record lows and other usefull climate data. I would suggest a previous report about the before-winter. Here's mine: it was a late november and december unusually cold, without cloud covered sky and temps getting down to 2C/35,6F, once.

2018-2019 Winter/US/Dec., Jan.,Feb.
by bubba- 2 replies

The 2018–2019 United States winter in the Palm growing areas of the country did not experience the Polar Vortex in the predicted manner. To the contrary, the Polar Vortex created a much colder than anticipated winter in the western US when conventional wisdom predicted a possible replay of 1899 that would torture the SE (see Joe Bastardi). LA reported a cool/cold winter season. December had a maximum of 77F, a minimum of 39F and a median of 59F. January had maximum of 78F, minimum of 38F and a median of 59F. Startling for LA was February, which reported a maximum of 69F, a minimum of 40F and a median of 53F. Snowfall was widely reported throughout LA. Continuing in C…

2018/19 Winter Low Temps 1 2 3

About this time every year someone starts a thread about Winter Lows in the Northern Hemisphere. Such a thread is somehow therapeutic for PTers anxious about how cold may affect their palms - at least we know we aren't alone. So, I'll kick off this year's discussion. This morning was the lowest temp since last March: 48.4F Predicted: 46F Current temp: 56.3F at 10:30 a.m. Tomorrow's predicted low: 43F Then a warming trend until the next cold front. I am making no attempts to move/protect palms at this time. After sunup, temps rise quickly.

Rainy season in central Cape Coral, FL, commenced Friday, May 22 at 6 p.m. with rumbling thunder and the Whoosh! of a gullywasher that dropped 2" of rain in less than an hour on our parched 0.61 acre of Paradise. That is the most rain I've seen in the past 6 months as we've been in an extended drought. We have 80% chance of rain this coming week.

I didnt quite realize how popular these threads were until this year, so here we are! "Happy" Hurricane Season. We will start off with the forecast for the season, and what we currently have going on out there right now. The forecast from just about every agency or group that puts out a seasonal forecast is calling for an ABOVE AVERAGE season this year. Colorado State University put out their forecast calling for 19 named storms, 9 of those being hurricanes, and 4 being major hurricanes. NOAA has also put out their forecast, and they are calling for 14-21 named storms, 6-10 of those being hurricanes, and 3-6 of those hurricanes being major hurricanes. The a…
