I 've been in the blue areas before ( above ) when much of the world map was in showing warmer than average temperatures for certain years . My ultimate Low may not have been that bad but I was very cool during past periods , with late springs and nasty wet winters . I'll take this for a change , and hope it pans out .

Hasn't been moved. It's an experiment. The palm is in a 15 gallon pot, south facing, no supplemental/artificial heat except the south facing wall behind it. I've had it for two years now. This is its second winter:

For the past 6 or 7 weeks we have had perfect weather in my neck of the woods. Daytime temps have ranged from the 70's to to the high 90's.....until today. This morning I awoke to cloudy skys, and then drizzle for most of the day and the high was only about 60F. The forecast is for cooler weather this coming week and then maybe significant rain next weekend. It was nice while it lasted. I always face winter with dread. Dick

mountain-forecast.com This site has given me a better understanding of average temperatures for highland species. I think it's a great resource for palm growers.

Here just northeast of Pensacola, FL, i am very impressed with how winter 2019-2020 turned out. Our lowest low was 23 degrees based on data from NAS Whiting Field. We did have several nights in the low to mid 30s with some nights dipping into the upper 20s, only one time did it ever drop below 25 degrees. The average minimum temp for the month of January was 45 degrees, and the average maximum temp for the month of January was 64 degrees. Correct me if im wrong but we had a 9a winter up here this year!

I took these pics at the stoplight in front of my office while going for a bite to eat. I have never seen Washies' fronds with their leaf bases (even old ones) detach from their trunk due to winds. The gusts here are extraordinarily strong.

Weather has been topsy turvey since I started this garden 14 year ago, but this spring this year seems to be a return to normal. My part of Louisiana average 56 inches of rain a year. We have wet winters and wet summers with spring and winter droughts. Just 3 years ago we had an all time record drought. Then when the rains came they came. We made 12 consecutive months with 100 inches and the calendar year just short of 100. And while we have a near record cold winter, and are having a nice cool spring, the spring drought has returns. I am watering the over 50 new additions to the garden on an every other day basis until the summer rains begin. As you can see,…

interesting temperature gradient
by philinsydney- 3 replies

at 9pm on a very windy east coast the temps were: Sydney and Newcastle 14c; Taree 16c; Kempsey 18c; Coffs harbour 20c; Grafton 22c; Ballina 23c; Cape Byron 26c and Coolangatta 27c. What a remarkably even gradient. Even the short distance between Ballina and Cape Byron realised a 3c difference. While I was shivering, Daryl was no doubt basking.

http://activefiremaps.fs.fed.us/activefiremaps.php?op=maps&rCode=sfl Fire in Flagler county has been smoking Gainesville out for several days. Last night was VERY smokey, reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile at my house. They update this map daily, I believe. If the current drought continues, expect this map to "light up".

Winter Storms Kai and Lucius

Man oh man! Did we have some heavy rain here in the last couple of days. I don't remember the last time we had strong storms like these - it must be several years since a similar storm hit us. Usually after a big storm, I wake up to see snow covering the Sierra Nevada Mountains. This morning, both the coastal range and the Sierra were coated in white! What a sight! Snow to the east and snow to the west. Rarely is a storm cold enough to bring snow to lower elevation ranges like the coastal range in central CA. How did youguys in the coastal ranges fare? Reports say CA-17 was closed in the Santa Cruz Mountains waiting for snow clearing equipment! https://www.wa…

Best/Warmest Microclimate Along the SoCal Coast?
by Alex High- 3 replies

Hello all, I have recently been reading a lot about people's attempts, failures, and also wonderful successes zone pushing with many tropical and less hardy palms in Southern California, and it got me wondering: what is the best/warmest microclimate along the Southern California coast? I have been monitoring the weather in several different cities along the coast for the past couple months during winter to see which stays the warmest, and from what I've found it seems the San Pedro area near Long Beach has highest lows, notably higher than inland Los Angeles and San Diego as well as many other coastal cities nearby. Since San Pedro is facing south, as the coast juts …

Coconut Palm - Strange Dead Rash Pattern?
by Hempress- 1 follower

Hello! I have a problem with my coconut palm trees as they are developing a dead, lace-like rash (brown dead spots/blotches - not bugs) in a consistent pattern on the fronds. It started when the nights began getting colder in Silver Springs, Florida (Zone 9b) last week 10/20/22 (43 degrees). The only reason why I think it MIGHT be chill damage is because it began at this time. I don’t think it is a fungus because the spots are not watery, blurry or bleed to yellow/dead, but are more sharp, embedded and consistent in pattern. (see pics?). It doesn’t really look like a Manganese or Potassium deficiency and if they were sunburned wouldn't the end/tips and certain areas be m…

Holy Moly! Todays high was 64 degrees! It felt like april. March is usually or snowiest month, but it's unlikely that we will see temps dip below 5 degrees again this winter. Here are just a few shots taken from the backyard. The sun is out for the first time in weeks! Photo taken from back patio. The snow is finally melting from my backyard. Here in colorado winter is far from over, but things are finally starting to warm up!

Cold must be over

I guess HD thinks the cold is over. I walked into HD to check out the nursery today and noticed they have a whole bunch of palms out including BIG (20') foxtails and queens, and a bunch of big bizzies. 2 days after the ice storm. I guess they aren't worried about any more cold or ice.
