Tornado damage... we don't see that much over here..

Yesterday evening i was in Rotterdam with my dad too watching the soccermatch from the team that i support. When i was home later that evening it was raining a lot and heavy sometimes. When i was home, started the computer and looking on the dutch weather board with weather amateurs. I saw messages about little tornado and "windhoos". When i take a better look i have seen some pictures.. This morning there was a heavy discussion about this... because the tv and radio called minitornado.. but if the look too the damage it was for sure F1. For the most of the people on this board it's an F1 "nothing" but fur here it's really unsual! We know the term "supercell" and seen tha…

Heat Lightning
by bubba- 9 replies
- 1.7k views
Heat Lightning is an interesting phenomena that in my experience is confined to the West Coast of the State of Florida in my domain, although tonight I saw a flash here on the East Coast. My understanding is that it is reflective bright shadow of distant lightning in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. However,on rare occaisions we experience it on the East Coast of Florida. Is this phenomena experienced elsewhere in the World and does anyone know it's cause?

Tropical Storm Alma
by Jeff in St Pete- 4 replies
- 1.5k views
Tropical storm Alma formed in the Pacific and is now crossing over Nicaragua. The storm is bringing torrential rains to parts of Costa Rica and some strong wind gusts. This is the third day in a row where it rained all day and night and I'm starting to get a little stir-crazy! I talked to a local friend of mine who has been keeping rainfall records for more than 20 years. He said we have received 12 inches of rain in the past 24 hours alone! The Parrita Bridge is closed because the river is now flowing over it, Sansa is not flying, so basically no one can get in or out of Quepos/Manuel Antonio for a couple days. I'm supposed to be going to the States on Tues, we'll …

Never any Hurricanes - yet very tropical
by Al in Kona- 6 replies

When we visited Malaysia some years back I remember visiting the state of Saba and they called thmselves "The land below the wind", meaning they were basically free from Typhoons or Cyclones (hurricanes). Seems most tropical areas that are within about 10 degrees of the equator do not experience these violent storms. For example, in Central America, Nicaragua has suffered from hurricanes on rare occasions but apparently Costa Rica and Panama have not. Can someone explain the reason for this?

Which area of the world has the highest year round low temperatures? I saw the post by Kris about his Cyrtostachys renda problem in which he described his night time lows as being between 77 and 82 degrees, in other words Cyrtostachys renda heaven. The long summers were brutal during the 7 years I spent in Taiwan (without A/C) when months would go by where we wouldn't even see the temperature drop into the 70's. We would wake up in the early morning and it would already be over 80 degrees (28 C.) and the sun wouldn't even have risen yet. Are there places on the planet where low temperatures are like this year round?

Anyone keeping an eye on Tropical Storm Bertha? Last report I saw stated moving west at 21mph... Very fast! Not that anyone can really predict these things, but it looks to me that she's already a bit far north to run across FL... They usually have a motion that arcs them northward. Fingers crossed one more time.

Montana Weather Records of the 20th Century
by amazondk- 9 replies

My dad sent me this information from the Weather Service about weather events in Montana my home state. Maybe this has something to do with why I like it in the tropics. Montana is a great place and I hope to get up there the last part of August. A few of these events I remember. As I kid I can remember gong to school in the morning with the temperature around 40 F and by the time I came home in the afternoon it was 15 F or more below zero. The weather along the Eastern Front of the Rockies can be real abrupt and extreme. It is a beautiful place though. dk National Weather Service Unveils Montana's Top Ten Weather/Water/Climate Events of the 20th C…

I saw some highlights of the first round of The British Open golf championship yesterday. The weather looked brutal for July. Highs were only in the 50's F. There was extreme wind, and of course some English rain. The event was at Royal Berkdale in Merseyside, England. Nineteen players with scores over 80. There were some big names in that group also. I love when the elements demonstrate our insignificance and challange our best atheletes during sports. Or even when weather influences other big events. I guess where I'm going with this is for people to think of some events where weather significantly affected the outcome of something important. A couple exam…

As a young Golf Rat,my mother would drop me off at the Course early every summer morning weather notwithstanding. As a father of two boy's(now moving towards young men)I now have a better understanding.I guess sometimes we can all be 500lbs Gorilla's but particularly when those hormones start popping as teenager's. That day I think I was on my third 18 when the sky became darkly ominous.Lightning bolts were hitting everywhere and the Storm was coming our way.All golfers made rapid movement towards the closest structure as the rain and following lightning were closing in.About 10 of us made it to one structure and we all felt happy to be somewhat protected. This one was n…

We have had a wet start to June here. 140mm (5 1/2 ") over the last couple of days. Good for the garden, and enjoying the warm night temperatures. I just hope we don't go straight into a clear cold dry spell when it finishes. Daryl
