This has been an interesting year. Last year,California got the cold air. This year,Florida did.Can Texas be far behind? Louisiana and Arizona were also warmer than normal. The High temperature per Weather Underground for Dec was Alice,Tx on Dec.27,2008 at 93F.For Jan.,Santa Ana,Ca was 90F on the 12th.For Feb.,Edinburg,Tx was 93F on the 13th.California showed up in a big way, especially from Jan.11-22.They had a run of highs from 90 to the upper 80's during that time frame.South Texas is just unbelievable for Winter MH's with upper 80's to low 90's a day or two after a cold front.Florida can jump into MH only when a cold front hits Texas and it is cool in California allo…

Highest Winter Temperatures-08/09 1 2 3 4

With all the dire predictions of Global Cooling and new Ice Ages and Great Freezes,it only seems practical to look empirically at the Highest Highs and the Highest Lows experienced in the Continental US.Perhaps this can calm us down, cancel suicide hotlines and generally ease our collective conciousness as we hurtle towards the abyss. Last year Florida won going away with Texas a close second. One observation regarding Texas is just how hot it can get. 90's pop up numerous times.California and Arizona were suprisingly cool. We may be seeing a flip/flop this year as the West has been quite warm compared to Texas and Florida. Will it hold up? Dec.1,2008-MH-Riverside,C…

Well, William Rankin,a Marine pilot, enjoyed this experience when his supersonic fighter jet(F8U) bummed out on him at 47,000 feet in a Thunderstorm over Norfalk,Va in 1959. He free fell 37,000 feet until his parachute engaged. That is when the fun started! Mr. Rankin was blown up and down for a total of 45 minutes thereafter, mostly in 6,000 foot increments. To make matters more interesting, lightning was popping all around him. But for a tightly fitting helmet,he is certain it would have blown out his eardrums. He saw lightning up close and personal and described it as a bluish sheet several feet thick that sometimes looked like scissors. He also thought he had a good chan…

10B zones in SoCal gardens
by Mark_NoVA- 18 replies
- 2.4k views
I've read a lot of comments on the board about the cold-hardiness requirements for palms in Southern California--sounds like the only frost-free areas are rare microclimates, and that typical winters, even in most of the San Diego area, see low temperatures below 30F. Does that sound accurate? Recently, though, I noticed that a fair amount of SoCal-ians list their gardens as a 10B climate. Given the above, that doesn't make sense--10B corresponds to 35-40F. The minimum temperature requirements of most palms, except those in Lipstick Palm range should be fine for 10B. If the above generalization is accurate, though, these SoCal gardens should be considered 10A or ev…

To follow up on Matty's gig on Hail,I did a little research. The largest Hailstone recorded in the US fell in Aurora ,Nebraska on June 22,2003 during an intense Thunderstorm. The largest stone retrieved was nearly the size of a volleyball and weighed 1.7 pounds. As you may imagine, quite a bit of damage resulted from this episode. In the world, the most prolific area is in Bangladesh and on the Deccan Plateau of India. The largest hailstone ever recorded fell in Bangladesh on April 14,1986 and weighed 2.25 pounds. It resembled a pumpkin. The worst hailstorm ever took place in Moradabad,India on April 30,1888. 246 people were killed.

Winter hit us hard (Western European)...

Hi, This winter is the baddest since i started with exotics since 2003, but also if i remeber me the last winters i can remember a winter like this. Since 22 november 2008 untill now i got only 3 days that the tempetures was above 10C/50F. During december 2008 a cold period was developed on the cards, but this happend every winter but always the milder options won but this time not. The frost started on second christmas day and normally a period is a week or some days more but this time the milder air didn't come to us and it was getting only colder on the forecasts. In the southeast of The Netherlands has got snow and because of that tempetures from -20C/-4F recorded …

Europeans; beware
by Clint- 14 replies

Forecast models are going all over the place at this moment, but having a negative North Atlantic Oscillation index (again...) as well as a polar vortex that has just split in two (Extremely rare, and hasn't happened since 1963 during a period of low solar activity), there is a significant risk of a cold outbreak next week affecting the whole of Europe between 45 and 60. If it happens, many places could see near-record lows.

Queensland in flood

Queensland the great sodden land as floods bring February 04, 2009 11:00pm MORE than 60 per cent of Queensland is covered by floodwaters and more devastation is expected as two lows threaten to develop into cyclones. The amount of rain that fell around Ingham in the 24 hours to 9am yesterday was almost half of what fell in Brisbane all of last year. Scores of houses in the northern sugar town have been damaged by flooding and hundreds of people are marooned by rising water, adding to a crisis now spreading across the state. The monsoonal downpour is the most severe in more than 30 years. Ingham, about 100km north of Townsville, was a microcosm of the hea…

As someone who happens to be red-green colorblind (which I've never understood the name--I think it has mostly to do with distorted perception of red hues, whether they be in green ( = brown) or blue ( = purple)), I have the luxury of not being aware of a lot of the freeze damage that takes place, at least initially. When Jason in Orlando posted those pictures of post-'89 damage, and everyone else was commenting on the devastation, I kept wondering if I was missing something. It wasn't until I learned about the "chocolate" color (which I still have a hard time recognizing--especially in dypsis lutescens, majesties, foxtails and the like) that I realized shriveled up fro…

Lemonade
by koolthing78- 9 replies

In light of the recent bout with subfreezing temperatures many of us experienced here in Florida (and the associated unfortunate palm carnage), I found myself looking to readjust my standards of what I consider the lush "tropical" look to consist of. Last Friday as this was fresh in my mind, I had the fortune of driving from my place in Seminole to my assigned practicum site on Causeway Blvd in Dunedin (not my choice to have it so far away, but once again I'm trying to make lemonade here). Taking Alt 19 all the way up through Clearwater and beyond, I took a fresh look at the downtown area as I drove through, and found it to be extremely tropical looking, or at the least…
