Why Paint Trunks White?
by insipidtoast- 14 replies

On a recent trip to Northern Baja, Mexico I noticed the bases of many of the Washingtonia robustas are painted white. This is unheard of in SoCal. Why do they do this? It is also common to see this on the Ficus benjaminas throughout Mexico as well.

Copernicia seeds (purchased from RPS) floating after 24 hours in water
by SoulofthePlace- 2 followers

I have purchased Copernicia baileyana and macroglossa seeds from RarePalmSeeds as fresh seeds as is marked on their website, but they all float in water even after a day in water. Is this normal with Copernicia seeds to float in water or to take several days to sink? Since I had many floating seeds in the past from RPS I started only purchasing marked-as-fresh seeds from them, but it seems they still send me old seeds perhaps? It's 13 seeds where 3 are the extras and all 13 seeds of Copernicia baileyana float hopelessly in water and rattle. Copernicia macroglossa 7 seeds are floating out of 10 purchased. They are not the cheapest seeds either. Is it worth trying to germin…

Freeze-Pruf Big Disappointment 1 2
by Jim in Los Altos- 1 follower

I sprayed the new product that everyone's been talking about, Freeze-Pruf, thoroughly all over and under my marginal palms and ornamentals a couple of days before last night's freeze with high hopes of 5 to 9 degrees increased cold hardiness that the product's makers claim. Boy, was I disappointed. My low was 28.6 in the coldest part of my yard. I sprayed the product on hundreds of plants. Results...none. My bananas melted, the heliconias bronzed, cannas no more, fuschias fizzled, and my Roystonea borinquena which has endured year after year frosts with no damage has little brownish speckles all over its lower fronds now. The product almost seems to have made my plant…

Tropical Garden in Imperial Valley 1 2

I recently purchased a home with a double lot in Brawley, CA...and the yard was a blank canvas. I have seen some tropicals here and there around Imperial County, so I thought I would give it a try. I have planted two 6 foot Roystonea Borinquenas, several Royal Poincianas, an African Tulip tree, a Keitt Mango, two Biscmarckia palms, quite a few Sea Mahoe trees, a Black Olive (Bucidas bucera), Plumeria and some Ponytail palms. Oh, and a Tipu tipuana tree as well. Does anyone have experience growing these types of trees in the lower desert heat/cold? I am in a solid 9B zone. There are regular light frosts here in the winter, however I have seen large …

Is This Climate Suitable For Cocos nucifera ? 1 2 3

As the title says. Is there any change for a cocos to survive there? Here's the link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Limassol#Climate (bear in mind that the annual sunshine is around 3300 hours) If yes this would be a potential new record. Here's a second link for a different place http://www.hnms.gr/hnms/english/climatology/climatology_region_diagrams_html?dr_city=Ierapetra (bear in mind that the annual sunshine is around 3100 hours) If yes this would be the only place in Europe (geographically) where it could survive.

Weights of various palms?
by Bob Johnson- 13 replies
- 19.8k views
Our society recently recieved this question from a local landscape architecht: "I am currently conducting research on a rooftop garden and would appreciate any help you can offer. We are in the process of designing our planting materials and are looking for weights of different palm trees in various sizes. Do you know of any calculations or tables that would be useful to us for calculating weights?" Does anyone know of a source of such info? I would like to be able to give him some data or at least point him in the right direction.

Somewhere on the volcano of Hualalai is our garden/Dean's garden. We are around 2100 ft. / 640m. Hualalai's elevation is 2,521m / 8,270 ft. and last erupted 1800-01. I took these photos of Hualalai when I was near the beach. The last pic is a sunset from the garden...

issues w Mediterranean Fan Palm

Hello to All, My first post on this forum. Thank you in advance for your help. We have a total of 4 Med Fan Palms: 2 in the front yard, both doing great, and 2 in the back yard, one doing great and the other is why I'm posting here. The two in the back are planted in the same soil and receive the same amts of water [irrigation or rain] sun & fertilizer. However, one of them has brown tips on almost all of the leaves except the brand new fronds. The healthy one also has other fronds growing out of the ground right next to the trunk, The one w the brown tips does not. Neither of the ones in the front have any brown tips either. The one in question has h…

What's the best bark mulch for around palm trees? 1 2
by Palm crazy- 1 follower

I'd like to put some bark mulch around my palms this spring, but I think I remember reading some time ago that some types of bark mulch is not good for palms because it creates a haven for a certain type of white fungus that can kill palms.... Is this true ? Or would compost mulch be better? Thanks.

Has PT reached a consensus about the cold hardiness of alfies, the "cold coconut" is it 9a, 9b, or, God forbid 10a where you can grow the real deal anyway? My initial impression was that it was easy 9b, maybe even 9a. Since then it seems that their cold tolerance was perhaps over rated. I'm increasingly getting the impression that it can survive 25f, but with a heavy frost it may well succumb to the upper twenties. I'm starting to wonder if the "cold coconut" reputation comes from the fact that it grows well in CA, which could well mean that it is cool hardy, but not necessarily more cold hardy than a nucifera. Thanks

Best Palm Fertilizer Spikes
by Mauna Kea Cloudforest- 1 follower

I have sandy soils and an excessive mole population, not to mention the garden is on a hillside. Fertilizer doesn't stick around unless it's slow release or in a spike. The spikes seem to be the most convenient way to deliver fertilizer, especially with drip since the fertilizer spike can be placed right under the drip line. I've been trying out a couple of the palm fertilizer spikes available from the local big box stores before taking the plunge and just ordering Lutz spikes. Is it really worth the extra money to order the Lutz spikes? I did some comparisons of the contents of the spikes, here is what's in them. It does seem like the ratios for the Lutz spikes a…
