The 18th Annual Spring Plant Extravaganza! Searle Brothers Nursery, Inc. & The Rainforest Collection® ---- SW Ranches, Broward County, S. Florida March 4th, 5th, 6th - 11th, 12th, 13th - 2016 Warmer winter? So so. Plants growing? Check. Wet winter? Definitely. There were a surplus of positive growing conditions this past winter in S. Florida. It was evident throughout gardens, backyards, container collections, and other places friendly to plant-folk and their charges. Plants grown in the nursery were exhibiting spring fever as the rains came in late January and were more than ready for display when the time came for the Spring 'Gan…

Inspired by @palmsOrl's thread for Orlando, I'm starting this thread so we can share remarkable palms in the greater Tampa Bay area. What I mean by "remarkable" is a palm that's unusual for the area it is planted. A 10' coconut in Wesley Chapel would be remarkable whereas the same palm in St. Pete Beach would not be. Just use own judgement and err on overposting. The "greater Tampa Bay area" is somewhat ambiguous. For the purposes of this thread, let's go with a very broad definition and include all these areas: Hernando Pasco Hillsborough Pinellas Polk Manatee Sarasota

This past weekend the Costa Rica Palm Society (CRPS) held a meeting at Villa Decary on Lake Arenal. The members who came to this meeting stayed at the hotel for the weekend and we all had a lot of fun! The previous owners are long-time palm collectors and it shows when you arrive at the front entrance! The new owners do not know much about palms but they welcomed us to their beautiful property and even joined the CRPS. We arrived late in the afternoon and the lighting was not very good, but you can see that it already looks very palmy. C.renda with flash

Coffee grounds around your palms? 1 2

I had some issues with Scale this summer around a Sabal Minor and a small Sabal Palmetto. I've since mulched with Coffee grounds since I hear it works well with Cycads. Anyone else use it around actual palms for mulch? Here's a link talking about using if for Scale: http://www.cycad.org/documents/Broome-Coffee-2007.pdf

Today wandering the garden as I often do while taking a break from work I noticed that my Beccariophoenix madagascariensis seems to be starting to put on a little size. I can’t remember exactly when I planted it. It’s been about 6 years I would guess. It was a small 5 gallon. Over those years it has consistently put out new leafs, but it never really seemed to get too much bigger. While still considered small, it seems to finally be putting on some size. 5 gallon bucket in 2nd pic for scale. So what palm in your garden caught your eye today? It doesn’t have to be your favorite, just something that stuck out to you today.

Recycling palm fronds into the garden
by redant- 31 replies

Well years of planting palms is paying off, I have more fronds then I know what to do with. My soil is crap so I'd love to add more organic matter and I have truckloads of fronds, but seems rather difficult to make them useful. I have a chipper but they don't chip well at all, they clog the machine with fiber. I'm thinking I'm going to make a sacrificial frond burning site and burn these so I don't have to keep draggin them from where I accumulate them in the back to the front where the town picks them up (about 800 ft away, urgh). Any other ideas

So. I decided to start a thread with my New Caledonia palms since they don't seem terribly bothered by my winter. Several should have been planted earlier... but oh well. Plus, you get to see the weeds..warts and all. I do have some "holes" in the collection, but those are generally ones I don't think I'll have too hard of a time finding. I really love the new Cal stuff as they are cool hardy and colorful! I'll get the potbound, heavily weeded palms out of the way early...to reward the patient readers... haha First, under that nice leaf is a Burretiokentia koghensis in a 5 gal pot. And here is a Burretiokentia hapala in a 5 gal also.

MattyB, in his recent "My Garden, Fall 2006" thread had a couple of photos showing some of his seedlings (in his greenhouse) and that gave me the idea for a specific thread for photos of seedlings. We all like photos of big and impressive palms, and big and colorful palms, but it's also helpful and interesting to know what palms look like when they're just at the beginning stages of life. So, feel free to add whatever seedling pics you have! I'm starting out with half a dozen, or so, of mine. Here's Calyptrocalyx pachystachys. After I took this photo I separated these seedlings and put them in individual 1G pots. There were 34 of them. And that's not counting the dead one…

Searle Brothers Nursery, Inc. & The Rainforest Collection® presented... The 15th Annual Fall Extravaganza October 4th, 5th, 6th, 11th, 12th, 13th - 2013 When we were setting up for this years Fall 'Ganza we started to get nervous about the weather. If we were anxious about anything, it was the weather. We knew we had a record setting amount of plant material for sale, even for a Fall 'Ganza, it was a lot of plants. So plant supply wasn't going to be the issue, it was the day to day precipitation that we encountered the week leading up to the first day that kept our minds busy. For example, the Wednesday before the first weekend (2 days prior) the nursery…

Curse of the Golden Cane
by Walter John- 31 replies

If this is Tuesday, it must be Beerwah. And so as I am on leave , one of the big garden jobs I was to undertake was the thinning out of the very clustered triple planting of Dypsis lutescens out front. These were planted by the previous owner. This I did, under extreme provocation by the Golden Canes themselves. You see, every time I went in to select a stem for cutting and carrying out that task, the golden canes would whip one of their leaves towards me and try to knock off my hat, and in so doing , slapping me in the face. This happened about 12 times, twice actually removing my hat completely. I soon wised up, and when the outraged palm went for my hat I held on ti…

I got this super silver last year at the pssc banquet. If I remember right it was a plant that (elhoagie) brought. Anyways, I popped it in the ground the next day and it has grown way faster than I thought it would. It was looking great but alway dark green and I was wondering when they start to show silver. This newest leaf is way more silver than the rest of the plant. I thought it would be more of a gradual change but this is pretty fast change in my opinion. I'm loving this palm!

South Florida Palm Society Spring Garden Tour Miami, Florida Saturday, March 27th, 2010 The South Florida Palm Society will organize and present a garden tour about twice a year. These tours will often include visits to private collections, residences and properties not often seen by outside eyes. The tours offer unique opportunities to see what palms and exotic plants certain veteran collectors have stashed away in behind their gates and walls. The four collections we were visiting today are located in the greater Miami area and included two that I had not seen before. In these instances, the yards you will see represent many years, if not, decades of hard work; gr…

Can I use Magnesium oxide (dietary human supplement, with Chelated Zinc, by Spring Valley) as a treatment for yellow palm fronds? I would crush the tablets and add to the fertilizer treatment. Good or bad? P.S. 3 tablets per serving = 400 mg of Magnesium Oxide and 15 mg Zinc gluconate.

Are Royal Palm Root Systems Destructive?
by Keith2- 21 replies
- 32.8k views
Hello Palm Experts, I have just planted a Royal Palm in my backyard in SW Florida, located at 20 feet from my neighbor's house and 17 feet from my house. My neighbor read a post on Yahoo, that Royal Palms have huge, destructive root systems and I am now concerned about whether my tree poses any threat to either structure. I already reviewed RKR's posting on the difference between palm roots and other tree roots (topic 4185 - Palm 101 Basics). It was very informative and concluded that because palm roots remain relatively constant in size, and create many interwoven runners, palm roots would not crack concrete like other tree roots sometimes do. Because of the c…

Do you believe it is prudent and/or proactive to put a little of the fungicide down? I have seen thin, stringy-like fungus beneath the mulch. Background: This palm continues to shoot out new growth but the fronds pretty quickly get this splotchy browning and start to look necrotic. About 3 months ago, I posted in this forum and got some good feedback to plant potassium spikes, which I did. Someone else said to apply a system fungicide. I have fertilized with a good palm fertilizer and continue to use potassium spikes, but the tree just seems weak, in general. Like the fronds seem to be drooping even more than in the past. Thank you for any advice, I am open ears!

Does anyone have a Map that shows the areas where coconuts can be grown with success in Florida? Also, do coconuts do well in 10a? I see them everywhere in 10b + but not as much in 10a. Buy the ones in 10a seem fine.
