Seeding Phoenix ID - Any Interest in Seeds?
by PalmatierMeg- 6 replies
Today we stopped at our local deli for lunch. As we were leaving I noticed two large Phoenix palms on each side of the driveway. One was loaded with seeds while the other, a male, was not. The fruits were still green and were 1" long x 1/2" wide. The seeds are 3/4" x 3/8". The Phoenix genus is not my favorite but these two palms were spectacular beneath the sunlit sky. They have been cared for and pruned judiciously and were perfect. I saw no other Phoenix palms nearby. My question is: Can anyone tell me what hybrids these two palms could be (almost all Phoenix in FL are hybrids)? Is anyone interested in seeds when they ripen? If the offspring take after the parents they …

We planted this part of the garden since 2010, with palms we found on small road side nurseries: Adonidia, Yellow Adonidia, Verschaffeltia, Pinanga coronata At the beginning we filled the space with dwarf Pandanus, crotons, cordylines, Tabernaeomontana, and Heliconias, Soon we'll have to weed! Within few years, it start to be interesting:

N. Calif. Palm meeting
by PalmGuyWC- 5 replies

This should be under Travel Logs, but I see no mention of the meeting there, and it looks like Travel Logs is not visited often. Notice of the meeting can be found under Northern California Palm Society Chapter under announcements. The meeting will be at the Palmetum in Oakland from 1 till 5 PM. No food required this time, but bring beverages. If any of you are coming from the Valley or anywhere and pass through or near Walnut Creek, stop by in the morning for a garden walk. Patric Schafer will be here hybridizing palms, so you can watch him in action. If your coming, give me a call at 925 937-4505 or drop me an E-mail. PalmGuyWC@aol.com. Bring a camera, please. One…

Your favorite clumpers in your garden
by redant- 8 replies
So we don't make this a Cyrtostachys renda thread, let's stick to clumpers you grow. My top three, picture in the order I like them. I prefer clumpers that have some space between them, that you can enjoy the pieces, I'm not a fan of the wall of palm things like fishtails or Areca's the way they are usually planted. Unfortunately I don't know what any of these 3 are so feel free to tell me.

Techtiphiala ferox
by mike in kurtistown- 2 replies

Here are some pictures of a rare and interesting-looking Mauritian palm named Techtiphiala ferox. The tall one is my scan of a photo in the June 2010 issue of Palms article on Mauritian palms and their conservation by Ludwig et al. The juvenile pictures are in my files, but I don't remember the source. Is anyone growing these, and where can seed be obtained?

Filibusta Failure
by _Keith- 1 follower

As I was surveying the winter damage, I ran across what looks like crown rot, and probably a spear pull minimal and more likely coming death in my largest filibusta. I do not think this is freeze damage. Most likely I just never looked up there and noticed what was going on. This is more likely from incessant rains last year. We received right at 100 inches, which is nearly double our normal 60 inches. And of course it could be something else all together. I'll get out the extension ladder this weekend so I can get up there and see what is going on.

Tis a sad day for my coconut. (My baby)
by GottmitAlex- 19 replies

Well, I woke up this morning to a sad sight: The rodents which tried to make a nest in the base of my baby (my first coconut. 6 and a half years old) late last fall (autumn), killed it. Fronds collapsed as if the beetle got the best of it. But this wasn't the beetle. Rodents (I believe mice, coming from the neighbors yard) munched on the side of the base of the palm. They didn't get to the heart of the palm but almost. 5 months later, well, here are the pics. I still have 3 coconuts left (one green Malayan dwarf and two pacific golden talls. One of which is still a baby). One Alfie and a D. Plumosa. You may ask yourselves: "why wa…

Phoenicophorium borsigianum

First of this month's 11 palms from the Big Island is in the ground. A few months ago I planted 5 small papaya trees in a circle knowing that sooner or later they would be tall enough to provide a semi-shady spot to plant a palm, and to boot maybe even some papays to eat as well. The fruit is still to small for eating, but the trees are tall enough to plant under and shoots the irrigation is already there. Just have to dig a hole and plant.

palm eating grubs
by fiji jim- 1 reply
This grub and worms were found deep in the stem of some of my smaller bismarck palms. The palms that were rotten from the damage also had earwigs and some other small black beetle enjoying all the slime and goo. Plants were sprayed with insecticide but that had no effect on these nasties. We had to cut them out. Has anyone else seen these before.

Chamaedorea id
by sarasota alex- 3 replies

I'd like to ask for help with identifying these. Both look like a microspadix to me, but the fruits are different. The fruits of the first one are slightly larger, look like little cranberries, have more pulp but the actual seeds are a bit smaller. The fruits of the second one are a bit smaller, look like tiny oranges, have less pulp, but the actual seeds are larger.
