Planting Tips for D. Decipiens in SW Florida?
by Palmdude- 11 replies

I have a nice double D. Decipiens that has so far grown quite well in a pot for several years, I'm thinking about planting it out. Has anyone in SW or S Florida had any luck keeping these alive in the ground? If so how did you plant it? What usually gets them? Crown rot or root rot?

Mediterranean palms in Las Vegas, some browning and yellowing

Hi all, I am not great at plant care at all but we have these beautiful Mediterranean fan palms and I would like to help them thrive. I can’t tell if I’m watering too much, not enough or they need plant food. Right now they get watered 6 days a week on drip irrigation for 25 minutes but you’ll see the tips are still curling on one, the other is yellowing and now some of the fronds look heavy? The bottom of the trunk on the curling one looks white in some spots, almost burnt. They were here before we bought the house and they are basically in full sun all day. Any tips? Or are they actually doing just fine? Thank you

Allagoptera leucocalyx

Hey all, when I got a small one of these (think blade of grass) from Floribunda 6 years ago, I thought it would be nearly indistinguishable from A. arenaria. But as you can see, the growth rate, such as it is, is way, way slower. It still has the offset, irregular leaflets, but is not as deep green, nor does it have the white leaflet undersides. Still, it's a neat dwarf that can fit in about anywhere in the garden. Anyone else growing this? Feel free to post! Thanks for looking.

QUAKE INFO. ON NEW ZEALAND'S S. ISLAND??
by Phoenix Bob- 4 replies

Am beginning a long-planned tour of the S. Pacific with many stops for the specific purpose of palm investigation. Have also planned four days on the S. Island of NZ. My travel agent has just completely re-routed us away from Chruschurch. I don't know if this is exactly the right place to make this request, but I'm hoping fellow "palmies" on New Zeland's S. Island might be able to offer some personal, accurate info. about the west/southwest areas (Franz Joseph, Mt Cook, Mlford Sound, Queenstown, etc.) regarding general conditions since the "shaker" . I know that the majority of damage was concentrated in and around Christchurch (horrible tragedy!), but I'm wondering…

Do They Really think this is an Improvement?
by Alicehunter2000- 11 replies

Near where I work there were 5 really nice Butia odorata that I have admired for their fullness and form for years. Well evidently beauty is in the eye of the beholder. What person actually thinks this looks better? Don't know why it ticks me off to see this...but it does. All the effort that we as a group put towards achieving nice full crowns on our plants....then to see this.....feel like going up to the person doing this and.....well never mind. This is what they all looked like before Here is his first "trim" job ......what an idiot! .... hey Bubba, that things really gonna grow great now! He left this one a little bit shaggy Hey…

Unfortunately, we do not have as many as we should have in this area, although we do have a number of Thrinax radiatas.I spied this Copernicia on a drive-by but am not certain: Could this be a C. yarey or is it just a juvenile bailey? These are a couple of what I believe to be Cocothrinax crintia: They still have Christmas lights but I have seen other Palms like this that are not C.crintia.

Pritchardia ID

I have the two Pritchardias that I would like to id. One is bought as a seedling and was labeled Pritchardia Arecina. The other is grown from seed and is supposed to be Pritchardia Pacifica, but I've always hab doubts because the seeds were rather large (about 2x those of normal pacifica). To make things worse the labels of the two palms got mixed up during a spring repotting. So the one currently passing for P. Pacifica is this one (let's call is palm A): And the one currently labelled as P. Arecina is this one (Palm B): Can anyone confirm that P. Pacifica is one of the two and which one, and also that the other is P. Arecina, and if n…

Palms rooting in funny places
by DoomsDave- 6 replies

Howdyall: rpimbs' thread about the re-rooted head of a queen palm got my head vibrating, with the thought of other palms rooting (that is, producing root tissue) from places you don't normally expect. So, where DO you expect palms to produce root tissue? From the "plate" (I'm sure the anato-botanists have a proper word) at the bottom of the plant from which the roots grow. That's the general rule, oinsofar as my non-botanically trained brain understands it. However, there are a number of exceptions. One of them, is Chamadorea elegans, which roots from the parts of its stems that touch the ground. The palm gets to a certain height, then, leans (not d…

Wodyetia bifurcata tomentum ?
by _Rich- 1 reply
I have recently removed two old leaf bases on juvenile Wodyetia bifurcata in my yard. They happen to be close to the rear screen door of my patio and a small walk-out. I was standing on the walk-out today and noticed a rather large wasp land on the somewhat fresh white tomentum and observed it 'eating' or 'gnawing' on this - leaving a design on the trunk. Observing closer - there are many of these pattern eaten into the tomentum. Has anyone else observed this and/or know why the wasp would consume this? Thanks, Rich

Tanger Outlets Daytona Beach Palm Growth Update

Tanger Outlets about 5 minutes from my home. They have a great assortment of tropicals and palms. The more cold-sensitive varieties pictured here are planted on the inside (surrounded on all 4 sides by buildings). They used livistona, Phoenix, and sabal species for areas exposed to cold. I believe @Reeverse and I have posted photos before. I am sure all the shoppers are weirded out by the guy walking around sipping an iced oat milk latte taking photos of palms.

I acquired this palm about a year ago at the staggering price of 7 dollars. I have tentatively decided that it is a chamaerops humilis, but now that I have discovered this great community of palm experts, I no longer have to guess and can rely upon the experts to eliably tell me what wonder I have acquired... Thanks Thanks Richard
