Can someone identify this palm for me? I’m in the little fishing village of El Cuyo on the northern coast of the Yucatan and these palms are planted everywhere as landscaping plants.

I found palmtalk about 6 months ago because a Dypsis Decaryi I had was not doing good. Long story short, being a new home owner and new to planting/caring for palms I made the mistake of planting it in an area that gets too much shade and I think I watered it too much during the winter months and it died. I found a wealth of knowledge on here and it really opened up my eyes to the many species available beyond the common ones seen here Southern California(Queens, Kings, Washintonias, robellinis). Of course I planted a good number of the more common palms, but now they have been in the ground a few years they are starting to fill in and provide some good canopy in the …

Throwing wrenches in.

I just finished reading through the latest Palms, and noticed the picture taken of D. marojejyi in habitat. To me, it looks similar to D. perreri with more upright, uncupped leaflets, and litter trapping habitat. The larger ones shown in gardens on the website recently look more ornamental, like a Neophloga style Dypsis such as pinnatifrons or nodifera. I mentioned that I received two seedlings from two different sources at a time in the past. They looked indentical, but they did not look like Jeff Searle's Dypsis marojejyis, which I have no doubt are the true thing as he collected them in habitat. These looked like smaller versions of the cultivated specimens shown in re…

Is this Chamaerops humilis?

Hello everyone! Another question from a IPS newbie - Is this Chamaerops humilis (European Fan Palm)? From what I found it's generally considered hardy to at least zone 8B (Fact Sheet FPS-123 Environmental Horticulture Department, University of Florida). Can it still be grown unprotected in the semi-arid 7B/8A? Thanks

Syagrus botryophora in SoCal

Hey all, I remember reading Robert Lee Riffles book “encyclopedia of palms” about this species, which he described as “one of the world’s most beautiful palms.” Seeing pictures of them in the tropics, I would tend to agree with him. But wow, I’ve struggled with it. It was purchased probably 10 years ago as a seedling and has grown vertically just fine. But it just looks awful. I thought that it was perhaps cold, which would make some sense, as I get pretty cold every winter. But it doesn’t improve with the onset of warm weather, so I have no answers. Other palms around it look just fine. It’s about 25 feet tall, give or take. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!!

I have close to no space left in the garden once my palms get big now i think. I am wondering if it would be fine to Plant a Royal right besides a Queen as a duo or a Royal and Majesty. Will they crush each other or should it be fine? If anyone have done this could you post a picture. Thanks

Hi folks, here's a couple of pics showing a palm or two that were no taller than my waist two or three years ago, now they are well and truly over my head. Perhaps you might have something similar from your garden you may like to share, it does give incentive and encouragement to all. Normanbya normanbyi Caryota albertii

City council palm removal
by hopper- 6 replies
Spotted this red X on this palm this morning, not sure of the type, but looks like council want it gone. Owners in adjoining house seem to have adopted it and kept it trimmed up and maintained. Not a bad looking palm, just not sure of its expected girth and height. I have been looking for a nice deep green large leave palm, is this it, or can I do better for my area? Hopper

What's wrong with my Bismarckia?
by naraj- 5 replies

Any ideas what's going on here? 3 spears are trying to come up and all 3 look discolored and crusty. They almost seem stuck where they are and the top spear hasn't moved in a while, though the other 2 emerging spears are a bit newer. I'm assuming fungis, so I've been spraying it with fungicide. Do you guys think I'm correct?

Free large reclinata
by palmislandRandy- 0 replies

I saw this on West Palm Beach Craigs List. "We are remodeling our community entrance and have a fully developed nice Reclinata Palm which we would like to remove. Replacement value is around $4000 for a tree of this magnitude. The tree has to be removed by hand so as not to tear up the curb and pavers around the island where it resides. It is free for anyone who wants it, but you have to remove it. If no takers by Feb 9, 2008, tree will be removed by our landscaper and discarded. Tree is in Ballen Isles in Palm Beach Gardens. Call Bill 561-351-1922 or email above". Can anyone save this palm?

After our visit to everglades city we decided to go to Fakahatchee preserve . before Everglades city on 41, I noticed royals that could be wild plants but some had the normal understory of shrubs cut so I am not 100% sure if some of these are wild examples. These look more wild These I cant fully tell, maybe they were there before the area was cleared . Notice the one coconut palm in the left of the picture . Now for the actual preserve. the first 10 minutes of driving was mostly marsh with reeds and scattered palmetto hammocks. no royals here . I started seeing smaller royal examples after the area changed from w…

Mapping my palms in PR?

I am using some rainy time to work on typing up my palm tree inventory. Fruit trees, heliconias, orchids, etc. are all in line for later with good starts by the previous owner. Sadly all I have are paper copies of previous lists as the computer versions were destroyed when the old desktop in VA crashed. What I have done in the past is to describe where they are in words. However with my ever shifting jungle landscape of seven acres, GPS would be nice. That way if someone else owns this farm (or I lose something AGAIN) all can be located. I see a confusing array online including this one https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/arcgis/id589674237 I do have…

Dypsis baronii care in San Francisco + hello!
by PalmKeeper- 1 follower

Hello, I’ve been reading through many posts on the forum and decided it was finally time to join! I live on the east side of San Francisco and have a small backyard we’re looking to stuff with palms. I’m interested in Dypsis baronii, we don’t have too much room (planting bed 3ft wide) and I like the trunk size and clumping form. The bed is west facing so gets afternoon sun in the summer and 1-2 hours of sun in the winter (a bit filtered in the depth of winter). Soil is a work in progress, but I’ve amended with many, many, many cubic feet of perlite (due to lots of clay) and some compost. It drains well now and nutrients are good (tested). Does anyo…

COLD ALERT-Seedling Protective Measures
by TheMadScientist- 12 replies

8 years ago this month, the COLD ALERT, that I don't believe got to 30 deg. F, destroyed all 100 Hyophorbe verscheffeltii that had grown to 8 inches even though I moved them all into the race car trailer prior to sun set. This brought me to a palm hiatus (I hurt for those in TEXAS this year). Starting in 2009, I kept to Humilis, Odorata, Theophrasti, Canariensis. The last few years, I'm back to the challenge of nature, but with caution. The local Los Angeles weather guys predict highs and lows from Santa Barbara to San Clemente and inland approx. 80 miles listing each city, but they can be off 10 degrees F. 1 week ago, they said 49 deg. F and it got to 40 deg. F....…

Native palm accessions plus a Copernicia

Between yesterday and early today, I got 9 palms newly planted in the front of Miami Beach Botanical Garden. This area has been a bit of a weak spot and so with a little planning, we have chosen the material and it is now installed. Still have a lot of weeding and mulching and just before that, some weed barrier. The palms planted are: five 3 gallon Sabal minor, three 3 gallon Coccothrinax argentata, and one Copernicia berteroana. The boss wants some color so some begonias may work their way into this...

On the right is p. sylvestris. This is a photo of the palm pointed out to me when i asked about the red seed. And this is the livistona pointed out as the source of the first (black) seed Does anyone know what species these are ? Can you also guide me on whether I should pack these whole if posting to the United States? Thank you.
