Some updated photos of the garden progress, it's been a challenge but its finally starting to feel like our own tropical paradise! still a long way to go and lots of plans for the future! Also still needs time to mature and I´m doing my best to improve the terrible soil that we have here.

Just took some pictures of the view looking over the river and some garden shots. Sort of looks like what you might expect on an exoplanet such as Trappist-1 system. Cheers Mike

Would love your opinon....

We had this Sylvester Palm planted last July, so not quite a year. It has never had a lot of fronds, but ever since we put a paver edge around the tree a month ago, the fronds have been dying off quickly. Can you not put a border around these trees? It's about 24 inches from trunk. The spear is green however the tip of it is yellow. It is a cloudy, windy day here in St. Augustine FL so my picture isn't the greatest. Would love anyone's thoughts.

planting out seedlings
by Harry- 3 replies
I am eager to plant these three precious (and expensive) mail order seedlings in the ground (in full Mediterranean sun) next spring. They are currently in full, albeit, winter sun. From left to right is a Brahea Decumbens, a Copernicia alba and a Brahea dulcis. Are these seedlings ready for the big world or should they remain protected in their pots for another season hidden away somewhere?

Foxtail unusual spear development?
by Markie- 3 replies

Hi there I'm hoping for some advice as I'm a bit of a palm novice. I have a few foxtails all doing really well, new spears all shooting straight up and then opening. I have one however that the new frond is opening as it emerges. Is this ok or could it point to a problem? Season is changing here now and the temps are slowly getting cooler. Time to transfer my Cyrtostachys renda to a nice warm home till later in the year. My good friend Clayton at Utopia has kindly offered to house this plant I bought in Cairns last year. Into his hot house it went. On arrival at Utopia, she didn't want to get out of the car. New home amongst other special palms. Bye girl, I'll come back to check on you from time to time, give you some f…

Palm Tree Hit By Garbage Truck...help
by Milk Sasquatch- 4 replies
Hey there. The garbage man hit the trunk of one of our very large palms while ridiculously trying to maneuver his truck on a 40 point turn in our culdesac. A pretty deep gash has been made in the side about 1.5" deep. What can I do to make sure this doesn't compromise the integrity of the tree or to make it less vulnerable. Is there some kind of sealant I need to put on the exposed portion, or is it ok to leave as is? Thanks for any help! I love this tree and would be really bummed if anything worse happens to it.

I moved one of my palms indoors for the winter but I'm having a continuous problem with mold on the soil. I keep spraying the mold with Daconil but the mold returns within a week. It's a one Gal. pot which has a mix of pine chips with the soil. So is it insects or what? Thanks. dave

Crushed black pumice
by The Silent Seed- 1 follower

I have about 15 pounds of the black pumice stuff that palms are often grown in, at nurseries/growers - I really don't use it, because it is too fast-draining to be effective in my plant house (Dries out too fast.) What are some other uses for this stuff? I hate to just dump it, if it has some purpose that I'm missing? Or, does somebody want it ? (Flat rate box) Not sure it's even worth it. Have no idea what this stuff costs to buy. I don't know if it can be used in aquariums with fish? I have no clue what chemicals may have been used in watering the plants in the original pots with this stuff? (It's in a container, and it takes up the dimensions : 1' x 1' x 5…

Hi all! I was hoping any forum members who buy seeds often, and are up to date on current prices, could tell me what fair prices per seed on any the following species average out at: Areca vidaliana, Arenga pinnata, Bactris infesta, Burretiokentia hapala, Chambeyronia macrocarpa, Licuala peltata var. sumawongii, Licuala paludosa, Metroxylon vitiense( I see rarepalmseeds.com has these listed for almost $6 a piece), Satakentia liukiuensis, Syagrus botryophora. Thanks in advance for any help!

Lemurophoenix Leaf Event
by Kim- 5 replies
Lemurophoenix halleuxii opens only a few fronds per year, so when a spear cracks open, it's an event to celebrate! (post your leaf events!) Planted June 2010, my "three screaming lemurs" as I refer to them, had a dramatic setback during the nearby volcanic eruption in the summer of 2018. It has taken this long to get some decent sized fronds on the center palm that was most exposed to the SO2 gas. Three sequential mornings of the opening frond: This center Lemur was the tallest of the three until the eruption (note the lower left deformed leaf), but now it is getting close to catching up with the others again. Do you have …

Please help suggest palms outside my wood fences
by miamicuse- 8 replies
I would like some input to what type of palms may be appropriate for planting outside of my wood fences. I am located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, zone 10b. The wood fence is 6' tall, runs in a north south direction. There is a narrow strip of dirt about 32" wide between the wood fence and the concrete sidewalk along the entire 75' length of the wood fence. Currently I have planted a mix of Simpson Stoppers and Jamaican Capers all along the fence. I would like to plant something a bit taller every 12' or so, may be palms, small palms not too tall, with roots not to exceed 24" deep (there is a sewer line under there about 28" down), solitary trunk ty…

Knowing my luck, had to show these before they go to palm heaven. The G, pauciflora is already showing black new leaves at this size, from Jeff Marcus. Seen his pictures of the full size ones growing, couldn't resist to try them. Also, a picture of a variegated Dypsis madagascariensis, that I got from seed. Anyone know if this variegation will last?? aloha

When I bought this 3 acre place, it was essentially a hay field with a few large trees. Grasses and winds have been the most trying condition here. But slowly I am transforming it into my own little botanical garden/food forest. The first acre was home years ago to an Asphalt Road Plant. The soil was compacted beyond belief and full of Asphalt coated rocks. The internal soil structure was non-existent. I have W. robusta, W. filifera, Chamaerops humilis, P. sylvestris, and Citrus here which are all thriving. In this humid subtropical climate, it seems to mimic a Mediterranean climate to some degree. The rear two acres were home to a 100+ year old homestead …

Suddenly that spontaneous plant appeared, gladly we don't clear the gardens very often. Now that descendant of a huge mature tree which has fruited 4 years ago in the village start to grow where it decided to be. We have to agree. ( maybe a bird or bat did the work ...) I'll be dust when the palm 'll be too tall, don't worry!

Red Leaf Palm ID Requested
by PalmatierMeg- 4 replies

I planted this little guy at the northern edge of my jungle next to a Dypsis pusilla 12-18 months ago. At the time I figured it was a leftover Ptychosperma of some sort. It's been growing quietly and leisurely ever since. This week I noticed it was putting up a stellar bronzy-red new leaf. I also noticed its showy praemorse leaves were leathery like some species of Hydriastele. Now I wonder if I misidentified it all along. Can anyone tell me what this little charmer might be? Ptychosperma? Hydriastele? Something else? Thanks for any info. Little mystery palm, Cape Coral, FL
