End of the Iconic Nibung palm
by doranakandawatta- 5 replies
last august 2016: years ago: I am almost certain that this palm is one of the rare witness of the work of the british colonial Kew gardens network. Reading "Palms" recent article telling us about Singapore Botanic gardens history, it seems obvious that these gardens had strong and frequent connections. Did this Oncosperma tigillarium come from Singapore? I can't tell, but this palms is mentioned in H.F Macmillan's book in 1914, and old postcards show her in the early years of XXth century.

Laccospadix in Central Florida?
by Central Floridave- 5 replies

I've got a ten year old palm in a container that I've kept on the back porch for two years since I've had it. I've of course google'd it to death. Anyone have success growing this outdoors in C.FLA? I plan on planting it on the SE corner of my house and under a very large Live Oak tree (deep shade). I guess this palm doesn't like extreme conditions (high/low). Its a pretty palm however and I don't like having palms in containers (too much work to maintain).

Butia or ....?
by mikesgirl93- 6 replies

Hi, new here...tried to look at pics and decide, but I'm not even an expert picture looker when it comes to palms. If you have a sec to indulge a newbie, please see if you can ID this palm. A friend that landscaped our place rescued this palm from a languishing yard and replanted it in ours after bringing it back to health in his own. So...it's been planted at least three times! We've had it about two years now. The landscaper called it a Butia...but after looking around here, I see there's more than one species! Any chance you guys/gals could ID this one specifically? If you need more info, please let me know. I just want to take care of it properly. It's abo…

On my last visit to Pauleen's place in Hawaii there were a number of palms that have lost their tags... on this blog of mine are 31 unknown palms which are begging for names... anyone want to venture some guesses? I do not have the answers, though I suspect Marcus might know most. http://davesgarden.com/tools/blog/

Caryota roots question
by MattyB- 3 replies
Caryota's fruit has calcium oxalates (whatever that is) that are supposed to burn the skin. I've also heard that if you cut the trunk down without a shirt you'll get burnt too from the juices inside. I think Burt, "tropicalb", told me that. So my first question is: Do the roots contain the burning stuff? And second, will gophers eat Caryotas or steer clear due to the irritant? Thanks for any help you guys and gals can provide.

Potting medium for Coccothrinax
by Gbarce- 0 replies
I am going to be potting coccothrinax seedlings (borhidiana and crinitas) to bigger pots. I am planning to put them in pots several sizes bigger so that I will just leave them there for several years or so. What type of soil mix should I use? Should it be sandy and well draining? Do they like a lot of organic materials mixed in? Can anyone suggest the mateirials I should use and in what proportions? Thanks.

Dypsis!
by Jason in Orlando- 0 replies

Does anyone have a photo of a one gallon D. malcomberi or D. mananjarensis they can post or provide a link to? I have a mystery Dypsis that popped up in a batch of Nephrosperma seeds (none of them germinated) a couple of years ago, that I can't ID. It appears that it will be a large solitary Dypsis. Dypsis malcomberi and mananjarensis are two species that I had ordered seeds of that I don't have a record of germinating, so I'm wondering if seeds of one of these got mixed up in my soil (I know it's not horticulturally recommended, but I regularly reuse soil for germination if it hasn't shown any signs of fungal infection; sometimes I am surprised by old seeds that germi…

Phoenix robellinii

Okay, so, a couple of weeks ago I found this guy at an unnamed nationwide home improvement store, they had 10-inch tropicals for next to nothing and I went snooping in the pile. Anyway, long story short I got it home and repotted it, it's been well watered and seems to be rather happy. Having done my research on this one (after I brought it home....) I realize that this Pygmy Date Palm is going to get rather huge eventually (for a "house" plant). But it is a dense cluster of plants in this pot, I assume for the purpose of being aesthetically pleasing (and that they don't think you'll be able to keep it alive long enough to be a problem). I count Se…

Any jewelry makers out there? The hardened sap is actually very beautiful in the sun light! This tree was cut about 6 weeks ago. I'd like to carve a tiki from it. It's still in the ground. Any idea how long palms usually ooze like this?

New Cape Coral Garden
by Palmaceae- 9 replies
As many of you know we moved from our house in Cape Coral to a another home in the Cape. I sold many palms and moved 52 to the new garden. So I thought I would share what the new garden is looking like now. We moved in officially May 1st and did a lot of work. I still miss my old collection but it is exciting to start a new one. I lost a few in the move like my Copernicia baileyana, Chambeyronia macrocarpa, Schippia concolor, Attalea cohune, Licuala peltata 'Sumawongii' and a Syagrus sancona. My Tahina is on life support, but my Borassus is showing signs of life, and my Corypha umbraculifera is coming back strong!

My Jealous Palms
by Cindy Adair- 1 follower

Now that I found a system to easily and reasonably label my plants I am trying to fill in some mystery names. There will be others, but today’s “jealous palms” are seed grown and probably from seed collected as gifts (not stolen!) when touring private gardens in South Florida a few years ago. I am imagining that these are jealous to be nameless while surrounded by others with Latin names on shiny new markers. Plus of course I’d like to plant them, but better to research preferences and dimensions first. Thanks so much.
