So I just planted some pretty rare seedlings about a week ago and the potential for a swipe from hurricane Bill seems likely. Any ideas to protect them? What do the Floridians do? Thanks,

Here are a couple of photos of how I am trying to protect my Green Malayan Dwarf Coconut Palm from what I think is a cat that has been scratching its claws on the trunk. I hope the damage is only cosmetic.

Protection of Potted Palms in Puerto Rico 1 2 3

Well, this topic could go under weather or potted palms, but here goes. I have worked too hard to grow all of these plants just to surrender them to some weather event. So today I could not ignore the reports that Irma will pay an unwelcome visit to Puerto Rico, other islands and even the US mainland. I have done the basics of water and food and gas and money and such. Pretty straightforward. Now to the plants! Beginning at dawn I worked under a beautiful blue sky until it began the usual afternoon rain. Here's some of what I was selecting from: I used my cart and still got very muddy. Some fierce ants (farming scale no doubt) did not wish …

This sounds interesting, they could use Acrocomia seeds since they take so long to sprout and grow quickly once they do. http://www.automobilemag.com/auto_sh....biomoke

Just got the paperwork today for acre #3 in Pahoa, likely my last. Assuming I can still drive between there and Floribunda, Bill's place, and Hilo, I am hopeful to plant a bunch of Sabinaria, Dypsis, Cyrtostachys and many, many, others.

Proud Papas Get New Palms
by Ken Johnson- 10 replies

Marc AKA MTM Palms recieved the first palm on my trip from Goulds to St Pete. He lives in Ft Myers and is showing his new Satakentia. His tractor was just big enough to get it out of the truck. Then it was on to Pine Island where Rusty took delivery of two rare caribean palms and then took my son Victor and I took lunch. Shrimp, Conch, Oysters and clams on the half shell! Thanks Rusty! The last delivery was in Brandon where we met up with Wayne (BIG GUY) and Tulio. Waynes garden reminded me of Tony in Dallas. If I could find him a big Brahea it would be a perfect fit. Tulio got a Copernicia but it was wrapped up and loaded straight to his truck so I do not know ye…

Planted from a 4" seedling, this bad boy has got to be the rarest in my collection. It is on the southeast corner of the house to protect it from the cold northwestern winter winds. So far, so good!

PRS....Palm Related Score!
by TikiRick- 9 replies

I have written about my continual problem with huge iguanas coming off the waterway and into my garden. They LOVE hibiscus, caladium, iris, and a variety of other shrubs. I have no more of the former since they had their Thanksgiving dinner early this year. I have not had any problems with them eating palms, however. (Thankfully!) Now, they are more of a nuisance and can be a bit intimidating since one bad boy is about 5' long. So, I came across this Palm Related Score and decided to join 'em. This is about life size! It is made from an old oil drum and was handcrafted in Haiti. It is about 4.5' long and I couldn't pass it up for a whopping $25.00. It's new home …

Prune a Pack of Prickly Phoenix Palms Prissily
by DoomsDave- 1 follower

The thread about palm injuries inspired this one . . . Phoenix, especialy the large ones, are NASTY. Some have spines nearly a foot long, and sharp as needles. First, get long-handled pruners, the longer the better. Get some heavy rubber proctology gloves. Keep in mind that these will only offer some protection. I've never seen a fully phoenix-proof glove . . . Don't be afriad to defang them, i.e, get in there and remove as many needles as you can before cutting off leaves. A haystack of needles is a recipe for disaster. Drink Red Bull, not beer. . . . Give yourself plenty of time, and, if you have to, do the work in bits and pieces. Don't …

Just Curious to see everyone's opinions on Pruned vs Unpruned crowns, for me I love leaving palms exactly how they grow I love the look of a full crown even with the dead fronds.

Sensitive viewers may not want to look at the photos attached. Yes, sometimes we have to do the unthinkable and prune a palm. In this case, it was a Chrysalidocarpus rufescens that is planted near a walkway. This clumping palm can produce a lot of trunks and one was reaching for light by leaning out over the walkway. My wife and I both grew fatigued of having to duck to pass by. It didn't help that a few leaves of my Encephalartos nubimontanus tend to reach across to the edge of the walkway on the other side, leaving little room to pass. Step one was to remove pups from the E nubimontanus on the other side of the walkway. That only resolved part of the issue. So S…

Pruning a double Queen Palm
by drewsg- 1 reply

Honestly, I haven't done much with this tree since it started growing and it's made this far without me so I don't want to do anything too much to disturb it. A problem since it's gotten bigger is that the smaller palm's fronds shoot up into the bigger palm, any tips on how to manage this? Also, how much of the dying fronds can you trim off? Is it okay once they start to droop? I just want it look better without the sagging & brown fronds.

Pruning a Doum Palm
by Blanche- 5 replies
We have moved into a house with a beautiful palm in the front garden. I think it's a Doum or Gingerbread Palm, about 30 years old. It's flourishing, but there are cracks all up the front of the house (it grows very close). So I've got to cut it back but I don't want to hurt it. I read that you can damage a palm badly by cutting back too savagely. Can anyone advise me? I've put a picture of it here.

Pruning brown tips on Triple Kings
by Christopher Dillman- 3 replies
So I've got these triple kings in containers, two that are on a drip and doing fine. This other one not yet on a drip (my laziness - still on to-do list..) and hand watered weekly. This one gets the brown tips more than the other two on drip. So best guess lacking of frequent watering. Any tips on removing the brown tips? I've used alcohol-wiped hand shears in the past for my indoor palms. Curious on the protocol for outdoor palms.

Pruning Coconuts or If someone would have told me...
by Peter Pacific- 1 follower

We have been pruning our coconuts and if anyone has an easier way please post away. It's essential to arm yourself first, not with gloves or extension ladders, rope or machetes (that comes later) but with a couple of young helpers to actually get to the top of these suckers! I never thought that eleven years ago while I was walking through the garden with a coconut palm in each hand, and placing them every few paces, that they would actually grow to over thirty feet! They are huge, glorious and provide the perfect canopy for the palms underneath. Keeping them clean is a chore and I can't even imagine what the cost would be to keep them this way in the United States, the…

Pruning in late fall?

pruning Livistona Chinensis
by miamicuse- 1 follower

I have six pairs of Livistona Chinensis planted in a row, each may be 8' from each other, the trunks are 8-12 feet tall, one trunk is over 20' tall, the fronds are now 6' long the shortest and over 10' long the longest. The fronds are kind of weaving into each other as they get taller and wider. The problem comes when I need to prune them. I usually take my 6' or 8' ladder, get up there and reach further up with a one handed reciprocating saw, to cut the fronds at the base. So the cutting is happening overhead. More often than not, once the cut is completed, it started sliding down but caught from above. The wide leave gets trapped from having several fronds…

Pruning palm roots before repotting

Hi, I just achieved from a nursery: 2 Roystonia 2 Phoenix Can. 2 Washintonia Robusta Sizes aprox.: 11 FT Palms will be located in pots on a terrace of our Penthouse, so full sun and/or shade available (we live in Caracas, Venezuela, South America) My cuestion is: as the palms were deliverd in rather small pots I noticed that their rootsystem has been developed following the shape of this narrow pot and leave hardly space for good soil around them. So can I prun the roots of the palm before transplanting them into bigger pots (4 FT high, 3 FT wide) I would be very pleased to read yr opinions. Thanks in advance, Regards, Titus

pruning phoenix canariensis????

I have a few Canary Island Date palms on my property which are just coming out of the ground. No real trunk yet, just a big 'pineapple'. My gardener says that trimming a few leaves will make them grow faster. I don't believe him, but ... the garden is in the Canaries, and he is a native, so has (potentially) a lot of experience with them. Can anyone here confirm if removing the lower leaves makes a CIDP grow faster? I didn't mention that it was planted just a little closer to the footpath than if I had planned this garden.

Pruning Phoenix Roebelenii in bloom
by Insomniac411- 6 replies

Hello. New to the group. Love the hobby. Been collecting various trees for 3 yrs now. Recently my Roebellenii has began to fruit/blossom. Its in a plant bed by my pool that I manicure, and would hate to have seeds dropping. I plan on pruning the buds off tomorrow but wanted to know if pruning them off would have any adverse effects on the tree. I wouldn't want to put it's health in jeopardy. Thanks for your advice.

pruning rattan palms

i've heard that rattans can be pruned to the hight you want them to be but i dont fully understand this. does this means that when you cut, for example, a stem that is 3m high in half that it wil resprout from the place were you have cutted it back. or do they mean that you can cut the main stems and keep the smaller ofshoots? i have a Plectocomia himalayana growing but when it wil reach the 5/6m mark i can not protect it anymore. it would be great if i could cut it back to lets say 2 a 3 meters high and that it wil grow again from there...
