I have been doing a lot of work in the back so far this spring. I didn't realize how much work it is to build a garden until I got a couple of weeks into it. I have put more plants in the ground than I ever have. I don't have much of a plan but it's starting to come together. I still have an enormous amount of work to go. Here are a few pix taken late this afternoon. C. macrocarpa Coocothrinax miriguama P. hillebrandii

Does anyone have pictures of buccaneer palms (Pseudophoenix sargentii) in habitiat in Florida? (I believe they're restricted to two or three of the Upper Keys, though I don't know whether that was the historical situation.) I'm espcially intersted in both current photos of the remaining stands in habitat; I'm also interested in any photos of stands of in Florida habitat as they existed in the past (if any such photos exist).

As usual I'm at it again digging specimen palms. Today I dug another good sized ravenea xerophila with perfect weather conditions. I'm not sure this guy will make it???? I give it a 50-50 chance since the dirt fell off the root ball and was pretty much bare rooted. I cauterized every single root that was cut during the dig process to ensure maximum moisture retention in the root system. I have had pretty good success with digging this species when most people say you can didg them. lets see what happens in the next few months? cauterized my transport method in the green house for recovery

Placement of a palm

Well here's a set of pics identifying the spot I propose to plant a special palm, Lemurophoenix hallexui. Thanks for assistance Clayton and any others too. 'X' marks the spot. Note the nearby downpipe from the garage roof. The surrounding palms include Licuala grandis, Dypsis cabadae, Howea forsteriana, Clinostigma sp."Hawaiian Hybrid". some Ptychosperma elegans and a Vetchia joannis. The Clino and Veitchia would provide immediate high overhead shade with lower shading from the Dypsis and solitaires. There's the garage for protection to consider. viewing from SthWest Viewing from Nth Pot in the spot

My first post here as I have been lurking for a short bit as I gain knowledge ofpalms that fit the bill here in Valley Center, California. I have a pathway entrance where I placed a overgrown 24" box P. Canariensis. Its in a basin about 36" off of the path. On the otherside of this path I have a hole where a Washingtonia Robusta was removed. In that hole I am thinking of dropping in a B. Armata. There is 11' to the center of that hole. My thoughts are if I drop in a 24" box B. Armata that that the Canariensis will out pace the Armata as it reaches for the sky. I recognize I'd have to trim them upright for a bunch of years. Ultimately while being close, their he…

Places to buy Palms in Florida?
by MDPalm- 27 replies
- 3.1k views
hello. My first post here..... I was considering a quick trip to Florida to pick up some palms, I was most interested in some Christmas Palms, Foxtails, etc. - more tropical than cold hardy. I was hoping to not have to drive all the way to south Florida and was wondering if anyone knows of some places to find these palms in more northern/central Florida at a decent price? I was looking for a huge nursery or grower who would easily sell to a non-wholesale customer. Thanks!

Places to see palms in the UK

Obviously UK visitors are probably best to answer this question, but if anyone else knows if anywhere, please say. I have been to both Kew and The Eden Project more than once, but I was wondering where else I could visit to see palms in the UK. Because I am mainly interested in less hardy species, I would prefer a larger greenhouse environment where I can see many tropical species grown indoors, but I am open to other suggestions. My only other requirement is that I can get there and back to Dorset in a day. I have a day free next week, which I would like to use to visit somewhere, so suggestions would need to be made quite soon. I assume there are other botanical …

I’ll be free in Los Angeles (by Beverly Hills) for the morning on Saturday, September, 22nd and would really like to see some palm trees! I’ve already been to Huntington Botanical Gardens, so was curious if there were any parks or gardens in the area that have a nice selection of tropical palms. I won’t have a car, so don’t want to lyft too far!

Placing Butias
by DallasPalms- 16 replies

I have a few butias and I'm wanting to arrange them... the short is that I have two types potentially - one type is the fairly blue hued Butia Odorata most likely, very twisty fronds with blue even purple colors showing on the trunks and defined gray blues on the petioles...a group of them definitely similar to one another and from the same store... another nursery had a deal so i purchased more... they are younger... the older selections from this store appeared the same however the younger ones seem greener with shorter fronds and I worry that they might come out differently... only one has minimal blue shades on the undersides of the leaf.... and a very light baby…

Since palmgain was discontinued I've been trying different things this is my latest discovery, just put some around the palms today I put quite a bit I mean lots its slow release most of it so it shouldn't burn them. It has the macros and lots of micros too so this may be my new go to since palm gain will no longer be around.

planning a palm garden in Thailand
by John Eve- 2 followers

Anyone planning a trip to Thailand in about 5 - 10 years might find this new garden worth visiting. It should be if I am successful. Behind the beach resort of Hua Hin, 2 hours south of Bangkok. I note how slow growing many palms are for the members in cold climates. Here it's quite different, so I am confident there will be something worth seeing in about 5 years. All trees are from seed collected in Thailand over the past 3 years, so they're still small now. I have about 20 more species that are still too small to plant, and am still planning to expand that. I am planning a palm trip to Dominican Republic for 5-6 days around Presidents Day next February. Is anyone else interested in coming? The guide will be a gentleman named Leonel Mera, who is a local palm expert and grower. He does not want to charge anything for his guide services, but he does insist that the itinerary include a trip to his ranch where he grows an incredible selection of rare palms from all over the world. I am working with Leonel to come up with an exact itinerary, but it will most likely be flying into Santiago (where Leonel lives), visiting his palm collection, and then taking a rental vehicle to the South West of the country wh…
