Pet poop prepetuates palminess

I know, I know, avoid affected alliteration. So, sue me. The thread on urine and palms inspired this one. There's a lot more to natural fert than, er, man- (and woman-) made. Animals contribute, too. I have three cats, and I love them all. They produce small mountains of byproducts that have to be put somewhere. This is Princess Dementia, aka as Anduille, and Evita. She's a bit more than 2 years old. She's the sole surviving baby of The Devil. Sometimes, it appears that PD thinks she's a parakeet. She'll roost on my shoulder a long while, without wanting to come down. Sometimes she gives me what appear to be love bites on the back of my fat he…

Pet safe systemic bug killers
by JohnAndSancho- 8 replies

I've tried to get pics of the bugs in question, but they're camera shy and smart enough to know that I'm going to smush them - they look like black leaf hoppers, and they love my Queen palm, and one of my King seedlings. They also seem to be scared of the red wasps that buzz around. I have insecticidal soap and Neem oil, but that only matters if I spray them directly. I'm looking for a pet friendly way to kill them/prevent them. I do see little yellow spots on the fronds where they sit. Sancho doesn't get into the plants so much, but after a watering/heavy rain, he will drink the water on my patio. Had to zoom the camera in pretty good go get a p…

So I've noticed the leaf spots are pretty bad on this palm in general but more concerning is this damage on the petioles id like to know what's causing this and if there is a fix its even starting on the new fronds that open up.

hi i'm Kong and growing some palms in seoul, korea. i'm afraid if it's a right category to ask this kind of questions. i'm sorry if not, because a forum format like this barely exists in my country. so let me ask you a question. it's about my fan palm(licuala grandis) and kentia palm. they're making new leaves but their petioles are too short. please see the picture i uploaded. the numbers on the pic means the order that leaves came out. a leaf with 1 came out first and the one with 4 did last. they are just getting shorter and shorter every time they pop up. same problem my kentia palm is suffering. thi…

I stihl like my chainsaw for taking down a tree but have been looking at that bow saw again... I do love my green and yellow weedeater but that weedcutter isn't that much work and is a bit more fun! Gas powered pole saws are a cinch but the toothy manual version can get the job done, usually in one slice... I flat out hate hedge-trimming and won't ever own my own hedge but pruning shears don't seem all that bad... How about that push mower at sears? The gas powered version with a briggs and stratton is only $20 more than the heavy old school manual push version... What's up with that? In light of the current oil catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico, I ca…

pH and Phoenix Palms
by _Keith- 6 replies

Soils in my area run on the acid side. And I just can't keep thinking about the P. reclinata I discovered a couple of weekends ago, planted in a sea of limestone, like in the middle of a crushed limestone parking lot and were the healthiest ones I have ever seen with a gorgeous dark green not always seen in this area. My one CIDP which is is brute indeed is planted in a hole where someone many years ago had buried brick and mortar. I had to use a pick ax to dig the hole. Does anyone have scientific evidence or experience that Phoenix palm love lime? I don't recall ever reading that. It sure has me thinking of applying a Limestone mulch, or just conventional l…

pH of your soil
by Dypsisdean- 11 replies

I thought I would start this new thread, as opposed to adding on to the fertilizer one. This topic was alluded to there. The pH of your soil has a major influence on what nutrients a plant is able to take up. It is a very complicated science, but if your pH is outside of a particular range, it doesn't matter how much of some nutrients (including micros) are in the soil, the palm (plant) is unable to utilize them. Certain palms (and plants) have differing requirements that we could discuss. Some grow in fertile jungle with lots of humus and very acidic soils, while some grow in alkaline conditions. However, I am more curious to know how many of you even bother to tes…

pH Preference: Habitat or Universal?
by knell- 4 replies
I want to make my question as uncomplicated as possible: For palms that grow in higher (more basic) pH soils, are they tuned to this pH or would they do better in the traditional slightly acidic range? Does a palm that grows on limestone want limestone based soil when being grown outside of habitat?

Saw a lonely Coconut Palm in an overgrown natural area and in a fit of rebelliousness decided to give it some company. Having so many coconuts falling to the ground at home and sprouting it seemed like a good way to get rid of some. It's still the wet season so they should get a good start. The existing tree has lots of fruits but nothing on the ground. Probably get picked up by people. Existing tree New recruits

Hello all, I'm hoping to tap the spectacular knowledge base about palms in this forum to help identify a couple of palms down the side of my house. I moved into a house around 6 months ago and there are some palms down the side. There has been a LOT to do here so haven't really been through the garden yet, but a week or so ago I noticed that the palms down the side weren't looking all that happy. I inspected a bit closer and found the bases were buried in around 3 inches of mulch, so the bottoms of the stems were all waterlogged. So I dug back the mulch and found that the palms were still in their pots! The former owners had dug holes then just buried the palm p…

Phase 2...Palmscaping the backyard
by Guest- 19 replies

I am so thankful my wife is into this also, but at the same time at this rate, we will be eating ramin noodles everyday. Palms have changed the way I look at $100. But it is quite exciting figuring out where to plant the next one. I am giving up one of our days tarpon fishing this May for this right corner palm project. Anyways, since I dont want just a random palm planted variously throughout my yard, I am starting with the corners of the back yard and will build out from there... leaving no obstacle to mow around. Now its time for the Right corner of the yard and I have scored 2 palms that have caught my eye, the carpentaria acuminata and the Dypsis Cabadae. …

PHC PALM SAVER

I was in a commercial garden center and they had This stuff on the shelf. The gent behind the counter highly recommended it, why wouldn't he selling the stuff. Anyway I bought some to apply to the new most expensive palm I have ever had to buy, a replacment for a dead Phoenix sylvestris at the entrance to my driveway. I have several other palms I thought might get a little boost from this as well. Any input about this product?

OMG, there are 2 absolutely beautiful smallish fat older palms in this far northern California town that I've wondered about for years. I stopped to ask the shop owner near the them what they were, and he said he didn't know but he had to trim them from his fence on occasion and he was really afraid of them. Said he like them, but he really thought they might be lethal. I thought he was exaggerating and then I looked at them up close. The SPIKES! Yes, they could be lethal! I was thinking of getting some seeds of one of the species, but ah, I don't think so. My agaves will be enough, these are much much scarier. How on earth do people harvest dates without injuries? Every …

I am down on one of the islands at IloIlo. Pretty much as you would expect, the most common here are Adonidia merrelii and Cocos nucifera, with Coryphas the stand out fan palm, and they are big monsters. They are also starting to plant a few Biz . Does anyone know where to see palms around Manila ? I have 1 day there .

Still an interesting sight, but not as red as I was led to believe. Frankly, given everything going on just a mile away, I'll take fronds opening in any color, as long as the plant is healthy.
