Nothing better than wandering around the garden doing a bit of pruning with the autumn weather change in the air now is a good time to be planting some new plants getting them to settle in before winter with more than ideal day night temperatures now is a optimum time to plant in my area with some new cold proven plants from the collection

My Johannesteijsmannia Altifrons are growing well with the recent high temperatures making for good growth I have the tube stock seedlings in the hothouse which certainly helps them in the subtropics creating more heat for growing conditions all I have to do is add water along with foliar feeding blood and bone and kelp extract

A couple years ago I posted a thread on here (which I can no longer find) about wanting to remove about 20 stumps from the north side of the front yard to create a new planter. Well I finally got around to it and since then I’ve been bringing in soil to level out the planter and prepare it for a new row of palms. Since I had already collected and acclimated a good number of palms in the meantime, once the planter was ready to go it was hard to hold myself back, so needless to say this all came together pretty quick. Here’s some photos of the progress as well as how it looks today. There’s room for about 2 more palms to complete the row so it’s almost done.

Chambeyronia Macrocarpa var. Hookeri color at 12 days

Late last fall I planted a hookeri not sure what to expect colorwise as its my first. while in containers they kind of faded similar to my watermelon but this late winter leaf is holding fast in 3/4 day shade shade. My watermelon was salmon color by the 3rd or 4th day even this time of year and it is planted 25' due east, same winter sun exposure. I had heard that the hookeri had more color, but my watermelon had some great rose red color in low light but more orange content in high sunlight. Light transmitting the hookeri leaf is more boldly red for longer in my 2 palm comparison. Here is show the low light(reflected) color of hookeri in shade and the sun transmitt…

Clinostigma question
by Kaname-kun- 2 replies

I planted this Clinostigma samoense one or two years ago that had this to me strange appearance at the base. I assume it had been potted too long in too small a pot at the nursery? Anyway, there is a smaller trunk beneath a larger trunk. It's hard to see in the photo, but some adventitious roots are beginning to emerge at ground level. It is very healthy and has grown considerably since planting in the ground. Is it OK as is, or should I heap more soil up to the new larger trunk? I have other Clinostigmas I have grown from seedlings and planted out when they hit five feet or so, and none of them show this feature.

Palm Damage unknown source

I have lived with my palms since buying this house in 2008 (San Diego), last summer I noticed a small gouge at the base, I immediately thought the kids had done i and moved on. Around 3 months ago another appeared, and then another and another, they are appearing quicker and larger than initially. I noticed a slightly brown patch just above too. Does anyone know what is doing this? I don't have sprinkers (I have drippers), weather has been worse than I've seen here a lot of rain, and very cold this winter. The leaves have a little yellow but they're mostly green and not frazzled. I do have a dog but the dog has been with me since 2010, so nothing has changed there…

I did a casual trial this last season with three types of coconut and--now that spring has sprung out here in the Palm Springs area--wanted to share the results, and see if anyone else has anything to report from any "desert Cocos" experiments this year? Please keep this thread going with some of your results! BACKGROUND: Last March I began ordering and planting some coconuts: - Two just-sprouting Cocos from Miami, supposedly 'Panama/Pacific Tall' but when I received them, the three-pointed nosebeak indicated to me these were most likely either 'Jamaican Tall' (='Atlantic Tall') or perhaps a "PanJam" cross (though that is just speculation, as I don't know t…

I was busy this morning taking down the stump of a phoenix hybrid I had cut down over a year ago. The Phoenix was too large for the space and had to go, but I never got around to removing the stump. Until now. I used a trusted shovel and just hacked away at the roots until it was finally freed from the soil. My yard is very tightly planted so I was careful not to damage the surrounding aloes and begonias too much. i did this all in sandals 🫢 The space if perfect for this Chrysalidocarpus ambositrae. It has spent the last two years outdoors in this pot, and I think it will be much happier in the ground. As for the carcass of the ol…

Hello, I have read sabals like to be in the ground early on. I have a 1.5 year old seedling, just pushing out its third leaf, and I’m wondering how early is too early and what experiences those in SoCal have with sabals. I only have 1 so i didn’t want to risk too much. Sabal mauritiiformis thanks!

Orlando lakeside gardening

I am renting a room at this house in Orlando, FL and have been given wide leeway to make changes in the yard. The previous owners had introduced a very tropical look but weren't fully up to date on the maintenance. So there are dozens of camphor and Brazilian pepper seedlings of various ages in the beds for example. But they had a cool tropical aesthetic, with live oaks massively underplanted with things like bromeliads, peace lilies, tongue ferns, vines, etc. So I don't want to change the theme, but I'm adding a bit more color in a certain area in the form of Firebush (Hamelia), Firespike (Odontonema), Brazilian red cloak (Megaskepasma), Panama rose (Rondeletia), etc, an…

I am looking for help / tips in laying out the field and when to put go from container to ground. Any other additional information would be greatly appreciated.

I can’t find my acquisition photo but in Nov 2020 I bought an Areca catechu in a small pot, it was maybe 2’ tall, here it is in June 2021 and then today, it has somewhat outgrown the adjacent red Ti plant. Pretty decent growth rate.
