That thread I started with a pic of a big Ravenea riv in someone's front yard that was about 40 feet (50 feet?) tall got my pea brain humming, and remembering, feebly way back when Majesty palms were the latest sensation, back in 1993 or 1994. Anyone remember? For your emulsification, I offer a link to a YouTube Vid, "new sensation" by X-something . . .

Madonna's sense of self-importance. Or, choose one. This Ravenea rivularis is near downtown Brea, or at least what used to be downtown Brea before it got Eminent Domained into destruction. . . . There are larger ones, down near South Coast Plaza, but this is the biggest one I've ever seen in someone's yard. Bet it dates back from when Majesties first hit these virgin shores . . .

I (my Bismarck) needs you help!!!

My 5' tall Bismarck had a few of its fronds fried this winter. I went out today to trim it up & I noticed the last shoot it put out had partially opened and it was “limp”, like it has no structure. One spear that looked mostly dead pulled right out and had what looked like cream cheese on the bottom 2-3” of it. It has another 5-6” long spear that looks healthy & seems tight in the crown. I went out and bought some copper fungicide (Kop-R-Spray) since I have heard people say this is what you use for fungus. I know you put this in the crown, but I have never used it before. Do I use it full strength or dilute it with water? How often do I apply? Is there anything el…

Beginner with a big project!

Hello all, I am new here and met Mattyb who steered me to the site. Great guy, and I picked up 6 trees trees from him since I am just starting out......So for a year now I have been putting off the backyard project, but the wife has finally put her foot down as we really want a nice area for our 1-year old daughter to play in as she loves being outside and in the dirt. So I have finally broken ground on my project. My backyard is 85'x85'x92 flat dirt and ready to be worked. I was very overwhelmed and still am a bit. I was going to have a designer come and help draw up a master plan for me, as my art skills and ability to see things that aren't there are horrible! However …

Palm and Cycad Sale Quail Botanical Gardens Saturday, May 22nd in Encinitas On Saturday, May 22nd, we'll be having our annual Palm and Cycad Sale at Quail Botanical Gardens (San Diego Botanical Gardens) in Encinitas, CA. This is a once a year sale and looked forward to by many because it's an easy way to see lots of plant material in one location. About 8 different well known palm and/or cycad nurseries will be selling their rare and unusual plants. Co-sponsored by the Palm Society of Southern California, it is usually well attended so plan on coming early for the best choice of species. It will start at 9AM and go until approximately 3:00PM. There is a nominal ch…

Potted palms in natural shade house
by Walter John- 18 replies
- 1.4k views
Here in my new place I was fortunate to have a ready made natural shade house in the form of three or four mature Syagrus roma, romn, romnify, romanahaveabanana palms intermixed with a couple of clumps of Dypsis lutescens. Note the seeds prepared by the local fauna ? Here at the back of these I have kept my palms from the shift to be planted at some future time. They have kept remarkably well and in fact some have grown on in a short time. It is now the onset of the winter of my discontent though and this will be the true test for these. I just thought I'd display some photos of them now and in Spring we'll return for an update, might be sad, we'll see.

Transplanting a Bismarck
by Chad- 32 replies

So there was a lady in San Marcos, CA (located in San Diego county for those of you out of the area) who needed a couple of palms out of her yard asap because she was redoing her landscaping. She thought they were Blue Hespers but when I showed up to get palms out of her yard for her they ended up being Bismarkia Nobilis. Now I know that the best way to transplant Bismarcks is to root prune for awhile and cross your fingers and see what happens. I tried to talk the lady into letting me root prune but there wasn't enough time. So my approach was simple....dig around the root ball as carefully as possible and as quickly as possible and try and trick the palm into belie…

Troubleshooting Palms
by enigma99- 3 replies

I am trying to figure out the cause for common Palm issues. 1. Slow growth. Obviously temperatures in the 80s are good and no freezing temps, but what causes slow growth when fertilizing, watering and exposed to warm temps? 2. Small Fronds. Why do some palms put out small fronds when others nearby are doing OK? could it be drainage, temp or something else?

Dypsis decipiens
by Palmzilla- 20 replies
- 1.8k views
Hey Guys, I just planted a nice sized Dypsis decipiens and I am a little concerned about it. It was in a 25 gallon pot and very root-bound. The good thing about it is that its really a nice size palm already. My concern is that all the leaves are very twisted, the leaves are almost upside down. I have scene other D. decipens like this that look "twisted." So, do you guys think the palm appears to be stressed? Do you think its from be root-bound? I am sure the palm will grow out of this funk, just looking for others experience. This may be my favorite palm specie, can't wait till it taps in!

The History of a palm
by PalmGuyWC- 13 replies

I was looking through the Memorial section of Palm Talk and read the obit of Dent Smith's 2nd wife and the history of Dent Smith. I was reminded that in 1973 Dent had scheduled a Palm Society meeting at his famous palm garden. People from all over Florida came to see Dent's spectacular garden, but upon arriving on the day of the meeting, we learned that Dent's first wife, Guadalupe Martinez, had passed away the night before. Since many people had come from such long distances, Dent said the meeting would go on as scheduled, even though he was grief stricken and could not attend. Lucita Wait, the seed bank lady, was there and she had some seeds that had been sent to her…

Here are some images showcasing the rate of growth of several cold hardy palm species in Dallas zone 8b. Notice the change in growth of the Trachycarpus, Washingtonia filibusta, C.humilis, B.capitata, S.minor and B.armata. Here it is still kicking after this past bad winter. The first photo is from 1997. The middle is 2002 and the last is this spring after one of the worst winters in decades. They went through 12.5 inches of snowfall in one storm this year and a low of 15F.

Regicide

Just as I was going out the door to work, a team of labourers arrived. I had applied for a subsidised garden clean up ages ago and forgotten about it. But I actually got it !! Had them dispose of the 3 queens that I planted in the wrong spots years ago, 2 big tipuana tipu that invited themselves here, 4 chinese elms that did likewise, a cassia that was nice but grew on a funny angle across the house, an ancient hibiscus, and had them brutally trim my lethal Phoenix reclinata !! Naturally nobody who has nice palms trusts strangers in their garden so I had to ring work and cancel for the day. Even though I kept an eagle on them, a Coccothrinax crinita (my only one) a foxtai…

Our winter carnage continues to show itself. My foxtail, teddy & hurricane have all thrown new fronds that proceed to bend down and flop. Will the palm generally outgrow this?
