Do Dypsis onilahensis bonzai?
by hanapalms- 26 replies

I was shocked when I saw photos of Dypsis onilahensis growing in Florida on somebody's thread last week. Now I'm wondering if my palms are something else or I got dwarfs because the two plants I have are vying for who stays the smallest: This is the larger plant, it's in a 15 gal pot, the other one is in a 2 or 3 gal pot. Aren't they suppose to grow larger? I germinated both several years back.

Need help with ID...

Hi all, Am stuck with a few pics I.d taken earlier. This is just one for now... Despite going through several searches, I'd yet to positively ID this palm. To my undiscerning eyes, it looks similar to a bismarkia. I know the silver coloured one. However, the leaves of this is green (top and under) and the fan leaf is quite large nearly 1m wide. Remnants of 2 inflorescence are deep scarlet. The petioles are smooth but appear to have a dusting of dark brown powder nearer the leaf end. please help... thanks!!! janie

Pritchardias in Sydney
by Steve Mac- 18 replies

I have a couple of 4" and 6" high Pritchardia pacificas in pots, that ultimately may not have long and happy lives. I would like to put them out in the sun every day and bring them in at night from the cold during winter, but my hours mostly don't allow this. The question is, would they be best left outside for a few days straight or inside in the window if that is their only options. Or to put it another way, do they love the sun more than they hate the cold? What is their more overriding requirement?

Palm Nurseries in Dallas

Hey, I'll be in Dallas next week, and I was wondering where some good palm nurseries are. My grandma wants some trachy fortys for her yard in Arkansas, she thinks she's a zone 6 but I think she's 7.. and some for me to keep inside. I would like some washingtonia, sabal, and some other commons. Phoenix don't look that good when not mature, and maybe the more hardy ones. I hate butia, they are not pretty at all... imo. But thanks for the help, I'll be looking forward to Dallas!

Calamus caryotoides
by rozpalm- 26 replies
- 4.7k views
I know that Calamus caryotoides is a palm not too many people grow due to its unruly growth habits. I have one that I have been training for about 2 years now to climb the trunk of a queen palm. The longest trunk/branch is about 15' I would guess. It was really slow in the beginning and then in the last year it has taken off and is growing like crazy. This is a pretty nasty little palm with lots of tentacles that can snag your cloths or tear your skin very easily. It also seems to grow in about every direction and will naturally climb anything in its path. This year is the first time it has set seed. Its a pretty cool sight. BTW, these seeds are as nasty as the tentacles.…

ID needed

Maybe I'm having a llooonnnngggg senior moment but this doesn't look like a med fan palm. The leaf areas that appear to be chlortic are through the chamera lens only. 98% of leaf stock is viberat lime green, no yellowing. The sun lite creats the yellowing when I put my hand under leaf the green appears through camaera. Anyway, I'm thinking Trachycarpus, maybe Oreophilus? Any other ideas? evening picture

Got two 1 gal seedlings in 1999 and gave them to a friend of mine in Simi Valley, California, who has a much nicer soil than I had at the time. ONe was labeled as Livistona rigida and the other as Livistona merrillii. Below are photos of both today. First note how much faster one grew than the other, and two, you think either are as they were identified. These are from one of the larger palm sellers in southern California and he has, in my personal experience, an extremely high rate of misidentified palms. Livistona 'rigida' Livistona 'merillii'

death to Ceroxylon!
by Bennz- 26 replies

A few years ago I lost about 1000 C. quindiuense seedlings to an overnight rat visitation. I've had many other seedlings die for no obvious reason over the years too. A few months back I planted my first little Ceroxylon grove, 38 C. ventricosum plants about 1.2m tall (to leaf tops), located in a sheltered valley next to a small stream near a patch of remnant rainforest. I checked them yesterday and they were doing very well, pushing new leaves despite our cold winter temps. Today they are deceased. Somehow a mob of 2yr heifers got in and destroyed them. I had grafted avocados there as well, and avos are usually top priority for marauding livestock. The Ceroxylon were…

Dypsis pembana

Other people have sung praises to this palm and I want to join the chorus. This is one gorgeous, fantastic palm. It takes full FL summer sun without blinking. This past winter it withstood below freezing temps multiple nights and a day of icy rain with no protection. It is a vibrant dark green with a bluish trunk and has tripled in height since I bought it in 2008. It clumps but not aggressively. Its seeds germinate easily and the seedlings are vigorous. What's not to love? If you find one, get it. Dypsis pembana A look at the bluish trunk. Small leaf is from new stem Midway up trunk A couple of dark green fronds Some minor cold-spotting on older frond …

Chamaedorea glaucifolia ? radicalis?
by PalmatierMeg- 1 follower

In fall 2009 I bought a pot with two stems of a Chamaedorea at a plant sale in Cape Coral. I thought this palm was C. glaucifolia but I have since bought a bonafide C.g. from Christian Faulkner. While these Chams have similar features I don't think they are the same species. The double-stemmed palm has grown seeds about the size of a blueberry on one stem, so that side is female. The smaller stem has also flowered and is male, I think. Any ideas? Chamaedorea with fruit

Chamaedorea metallica
by PalmatierMeg- 8 replies
Last fall I bought a potful of Chamaedorea metallica - four plants jammed into a 3g. It took about an hour and lots of hosework, but I managed to separate them into individual 3g. They sulked and dropped leaves for 6 months in the shade garden and inside during cold waves before they finally turned around. Now they are all flowering. Three look the same, one a bit different. Can anyone tell me: are they all male, female or mixed? Given what they've gone through I don't expect viable seeds but that would be nice. Chamaedorea metallica flowering Closer look at flowers
