My first time ever having to move palms inside because it’s cold out 1 2 3 4

After getting into palms in South Florida (zone 10b) it’s really weird having to take some of my more sensitive palms and tropicals inside because of the forecasted low temp. When I moved to Central FL I don’t think I’d fully grasped how much chillier it can be here, or I at least thought it’d be more infrequent! An occasional dip into the 40’s and (on one occasion) into the 30’s was fine down there because in a day or so it was straight back into the 70’s, 80’s, and 90’s, so stuff could bounce back quick. But I’ve got some stuff in pots up here that are not alright with consistent lows like that and highs that don’t keep them warm enough... over the next 9 days only…

I want to say hi to everybody once more and introduce myself…I have been reading this great forum for years . Experiences and advice here helped me a lot especialy in the beginning of my garden, in time when you read first data about some palm on the net or learn about temperature zones generally and in your area and realizing that there is much more than just few numbers that define it. I am in Split Croatia 43.5100° N, 16.4500° E usda zone 9a/b border(every year 29-27F few nights, maybe every five year 25F for one night), we got long hot summers here with relatively lots of rain, problem is that most rain falls in winter time, so there is long cool wet period from end …

Give Us Your One-Liner 1 2 3 4
by Phil- 138 replies

OK. How about a thread with significant one liners that you've heard or thought of regarding palms, palm collectors or palm related activities. The only requirement is that these one liners must be true or not true, near correct or totally false, somewhat factual or all-together wrong, or something along these lines. And, they cannot be insulting or critical of another. You don't have to say whether or not they are coorect. The reader must decipher which ones to believe or not believe and which ones to laugh at. It could be fun. I realize that some might think this trivial and other's might think this is a travesty for valuable server disc space. Indeed, they migh…

Turning my dream into a reality 1 2 3 4

Hello all, As a fellow palm enthusiast, I’d often day dream of owning land and designing a nursery. For the past few years, I’ve scoured multiple reality websites, searching for the perfect plot. We found one and offered full price for a little over 12 acres and the owner accepted. This property was beautiful and was once a running nursery (perfect for me!). A few days went by after putting deposit down, when the realtor called me saying that the owner got cold feet and backed out of the deal. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. Many nights I spent plotting and scheming the lay of the land and what to do with it, just for them to pull the rug from under me.…

Does anyone know if there has been a study done or if information is available that shows which type of mulch is best re: the amount and/or quality of nutritional value from the decomposing material? I would like to know if eucalyptus, melaleuca, cypress, pine, oak, etc., is best (although I don't use cypress). Thanks... Tim

Today i took this picture of a royal palm growing up here in Flagler Beach. I don't know how old or how long its been planted at this site. The tree looks like its been there for at least 4 or 5 years, maybe more. It looks like its got some cold damage on the trunk. I first saw it from my friends boat while we were fishing in the intracoastal and i was surprised to see it. I figured out where we were and here's the picture. I haven't been able to speak with the owners but if i do i will make sure to find out more about it.

When: Thursday June 14th, 2012 at 12 noon Where: Floribunda palm nursery in Hawaiian Acres, Big Island of Hawaii Objective: Buy palms (no surprise there! ) Kim and I arrived a few minutes after 12 noon and were greeted by Jeff and Suchin. Jeff asked "do you want to go for a garden tour first and then buy palms? Or just buy the palms? I have the afternoon available." Hmmm...that decision didn't take long to make! I have been to Floribunda many times over the past 17 years, but I never tire of looking at the palms - in the ground and in the nursery. Always something new and simply seeing the growth of many of these palms is amazing in itself. Right away we stumbled …

As new in the forum i would like to say hi to all of you palm lovers ! In the early years i started working on gardening , spend lot of time and money on tropical plants you can found in flower shops that were also overpriced , tender , and get easily infected almost from anything ! I was always get fascinated by the tropical vegetation and those beaches with the curved coconut trees and i wish some day i will be in a place like that ! So i decided to make my garden looks more tropical than moving to Hawaii which is kind difficult for many reasons ! Making my garden tropical looking it was also difficult , not from the aspect that there not palms that can handle my…

New Dypsis and other unseen species 1 2 3 4

Hi All I thought you all might like to see some Great habitat photos of some unseen species so i will start with a Dypsis that many would know as Highland redneck as Mike explained (in another topic) this species starts out looking just like a Dypsis lastelliana seedling, in fact it would be very hard to tell these two species apart "as seedlings" if they were ever mixed together, once they are a little older this species Dypsis sp "hovitrendrina" soon starts to produce lots of white tomentum on it's petioles so you then could tell it apart from the true D.lastelliana, i should list some cultivated plants of this species here as well so all can see what these look like…

I've been meaning to take some progress pics of the garden and finally got started doing so this evening. I'll take and post some more this weekend but I can't wait to get started posting now! The front entry planter with Hyophorbe vershafeltii and Dypsis heteromorpha. Dispite being cold sensitive and getting spotty leaves, these Hyophorbe are getting fat! The triangle palms out front by the driveway are really shaping up nicely. The one on the left was blown over completely last Winter. I did not upright it, it did it by itself. The 7 small palms speckled in between the triangles are Brahea decumbens. From near to far: Copernicia cerifera, Cope…

Last time I was at South Coast Palms I was floored by how wide the spread was on a couple of Gary Wood's Sabals. I thought it might be interesting to see a bunch of them as a thread here. Photos with people for scale are even better. Any species works - bermudana, riverside, yapa - all the monsters. I'm at work, and will check through my photos and post them when I get home.

Hello! My 2 Archontophoenix alexandrae which i had ordered from Palme Per Paket(www.palmeperpaket.de) the past week, just came!!! They came perfectly packed too, even protected by an insulation box, something i think was very well thought coming from Germany, which had just experienced awfully low tempratures the past 2 weeks if i am right Packing material was in the box too that held the plants still and prevented damage to their leaves Anyway, enough said, here are the pictures!!!! Resting on the box they came in,just barely unpacked The smaller of the 2(by one pinnate leaf only ) The bigger one

Dear Friends, Iam meeting you all after a small gap. Here in this thread i will post visuals of palm planting work carried out with my collection of palms. they were planted in a govt park nearby to our house, which is hardly one far-long.For many years i have been trying to get permission to plant palm trees in local parks but found it difficult to make contact with the concerned authorities. 3 months back we have sever floods due to rain and many parks are in bad shape as most of the plants have decayed due to rain water stagnation etc.So the govt has started improving and started planting new saplings and also have allowed the public to contribute to the p…

I was taking photos last night and decided to take one of my C. Houailou. I was keeping it under one of my large C. macrocarpa but decided to move it under shade as the days become more oppressive. It is still in bifid stage but I understand it is slower to go pinnate.

Liana's backyard in the farm. These are fast growers...they've doubled in size in the last 18 months, since I've seen them for the first time. Still keeping the "windows" but I guess it won't last long at this point, for the next fronds (?)... Beautiful palms aren't they?

it's been some time now i am thinking about which species would be suitable to grow in the actual mediterranean climate and so i thought to start with a list and let other members add or remove according to their own experiences. For the purpose of this topic i would consider a mediterranean climate to have the following characteristics Winters with max lows of -2C/26F (very rare events) Summers with max highs 45C/113F Humidity on average around 75% with the exception of daytime hot dry winds in the summer Moderate winds Number of sunny days around 220 per year Now, i know that there are parts of the mediterranean which may vary somehow but i think that these charact…

Another forum member requested a post of "little treasures" he saw in the background in a picture I posted and I am happy to oblige but these are not all palms though so I hope our modulator and co-moderator (who I hope is still on a palm high from the biennial) won't mind a few stuff mixed. So here we go Gileno-this threads for you. Lets start with... ...a palm. A Variegated Vietchii . This needs to be kept under a net because the variegated parts get burned too easily. A fast grower I think. Its already starting to form a trunk. teh variegation is yellow and a lighter shade of green so I guess it has a lot of chlorophyll in its system to make food-- hence …

Coconut Palm Experiment in Southern Italy 1 2 3 4

My freind is trying to grow a Coconut tree in his southern italian location. He bought the sprouted seed from the local Lidl. He planted it since the beginning of August 2018 and miraculously Its still alive and well. He recently built a plastic canopy around it to protect it from cooler winter weather. He is located in one of the very very few frost free zones in europe where papayas mangos plumerias ficus lyratas canistel pitayas cavendish bananas flourish hardily without any protection
