MattyB, in his recent "My Garden, Fall 2006" thread had a couple of photos showing some of his seedlings (in his greenhouse) and that gave me the idea for a specific thread for photos of seedlings. We all like photos of big and impressive palms, and big and colorful palms, but it's also helpful and interesting to know what palms look like when they're just at the beginning stages of life. So, feel free to add whatever seedling pics you have! I'm starting out with half a dozen, or so, of mine. Here's Calyptrocalyx pachystachys. After I took this photo I separated these seedlings and put them in individual 1G pots. There were 34 of them. And that's not counting the dead one…

His newest endeavor will be to build his family's dream home on Fort Walton Beach, Florida. David's goal is to landscape with mature palms and he has contacted me to help with the entire project. By posting here we can include all of you in the design, construction, plant selection and fun of this project. On the occasion of the first pinnate leaf of my N°1401 I open a new thread for this only little known species Lytocaryum insigne TOLEDO 1944 (now again Syagrus insignis BECC. 1916, former Cocos insignis MART. 1854 and Glaziova insignis DRUDE 1881) Please post your pics of L insigne here, too! It doesn’t matter if they are in pots, in gardens, or (best of all) in habitat. I begin with my oldest baby N°1401, born 2014-02-14 during the cold winter in Germany, grown up together with nine other siblings, out of which six emigrated into other European countries, so that at my place now are remaining still four plants: N°1401, 1402, 1404, and 1408. Here comes the bigg…

So. I decided to start a thread with my New Caledonia palms since they don't seem terribly bothered by my winter. Several should have been planted earlier... but oh well. Plus, you get to see the weeds..warts and all. I do have some "holes" in the collection, but those are generally ones I don't think I'll have too hard of a time finding. I really love the new Cal stuff as they are cool hardy and colorful! I'll get the potbound, heavily weeded palms out of the way early...to reward the patient readers... haha First, under that nice leaf is a Burretiokentia koghensis in a 5 gal pot. And here is a Burretiokentia hapala in a 5 gal also.

My Name is Lior Gal, It's nice meeting you all, And I'm a Coconut Palm Addict, It first started a few years ago, While iv'e been in the U.S. for a short visit, Then i saw this beautiful palm and i was blown away by its appearence, Then the thaught of growing one of my own started to "Bugg" me, Then the rational thinking took over ... (it said..you will never manage to keep it alive) but then after 2 years of thinking about it, My stubborn nature took over, And I decided to go for it, what started as 2 coconut nuts, that i got from a friend, from them i sprouted 2 small coconut palms, became 8 sprouts I have 2 Samoan Dwarfs, 3 Hawaiian Tall Sprouts, and the 2 Big …

What specific parts of Florida would be the most northerly one could reliably find Zone 9b plants, 10a plants and 10b plants. Please include any islands that are accessible by car and might have land for sale. I have often wondered how far down the Gulf Coast I would have to travel to get to areas where palms that I can't grow here might survive. Would Cedar Key be Zone 9b? How about St. George Island up in the Big Bend area? Any photo's of some of these more obscure locations?

Well today is the big day. 1 year in the ground for my golden Malayan dwarf coconut. What began as a late summer impulsive purchase has turned out to be a great adventure. I am not out of the woods by any means. At this stage it would only take one dip into the low 30's to wipe em out. But still, I am hopeful. ^^2016^^ ^^Originally planted horizontally on native soil. July 27th 2016.^^ ^^Replaced its plot with pure sand and planted it in a vertical manner (yes, a tad bit too close to the fence) August 29th 2016. One year ago to this day.^^ ^^ Mirror "Techniques" in order to give them more light/heat throughout t…

I am starting this thread so as not to high-jack the Dypsis oropedionis thread. Several days ago, unaware of the D. oropedionis thread currently running, I did some experiments on small D. oropedionis to see how well they could handle the frost. I placed a small seedling on a glass table on my deck in one of the coldest Winter spots in our garden. I also place another on the table under 2 plastic pots. After placing them on the table I realised I needed some sort of control or ways of comparing wether the results of D. oropedionis in frost conditions were good or bad compared to other species I had, so I grabbed a few more seedlings for the frosty table experiment. Th…

Pogobob took me to see this amazing palm, it is its the real colour!! The colour is very strong in this palm. You can see some of it on the inside of the sheaf of an old leaf. Pictures do not do it justice , the actual colour is more vibrant. Has any one seen any other unusual colours on this species crownshaft? hope you enjoy this shared experience regards colin

I've seen a few post about the northern ranges of coconuts and when I saw these I figured I'd share. This is Sanford FL, a couple of hundred yards south of Lake Monroe. Looking at google earth they were planted in 2013. They have grown quite a bit since then. street view: https://www.google.com/maps/@28.8115585,-81.2515015,3a,75y,250.93h,78.65t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sviAF9tkw_-Cg7qE4cNqmfg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656!6m1!1e1

It's been a very rainy December this year. Here in Paphos till now we had 278% more than the average rainfall for the month and there is more coming. My palm took a lot of rain the last 3 weeks because is only protected with a plastic naylon from the northern wind. Despite of this the temps were mild and I didn't get less than 10c in my garden. We had days around 19-20 and a couple 22c. The nights were mostly 10-12c with some 13-14c. One thing I noticed is the palm had no issues so far and even the newest spear seems that it keeps growing. I guess we'll have soon more cool nights but the palm will not get any extra covering and see what happens.

I got this JubeaX ButiaX Syagrus hybrid from Patrick a couple of years ago. Here are my results in a mostly shaded USDA zone 8b. Dallas My Jubutyagrus has gone through two growing season and is now in its second winter. Here are some images. 2011 Jan Jan 2011 This is a picture 2 years ago in Dec, 2009 after 24F. Does anyone have experience with this hybrid? What has your experience been with them? Thanks.

Almost 20 years ago I escaped the frozen tundra of Michigan and moved into the sauna of NW Orlando. It's hard to describe the abrupt transition, but I was pretty sure that I moved into an oven. Despite the oppressive heat and humidity in the summer, it was far better than spending September-April indoors and never seeing the sun! I lucked out when I moved, as I bought very cheap just before a huge price jump in the Orlando housing market. I found a nice house on about 3/4 acre of land with a great looking canopy of about 40 big oaks and a few pines. What I did *not* luck out on is my ignorance of southern oak trees. I didn't know that they were *not* the typical…

Dr. John Dransfield, co-editor of PALMS, the IPS Journal, has been on the Big Island since last week, and for the last few days John and his delightful wife, Soejatmi, have been our guests. Yesterday I set a personal record, when John and I went for an eight hour garden tour here. And wishing we had had more time! John kindly offered his opinion on a multitude of palms, and I was taking notes as fast as I could! I'm going to post a number of John's comments, as well as photos taken by me (in our garden and at Floribunda Palms earlier today). Not quite sure how many photos that are good enough to be posted, but I intend to post them all tonight, but not necessarily within …

When I found out the dates for the So.-Cal. banquet, I immediately started looking into this to see if I could come out for a long weekend. My friend Ken and I booked our flights, made a few phone calls, and after many emails, arrived in San Diego on thursday morning. Bill (BS Man About Palms)was gracious enough to meet us at the airport and drive us around for the day. Our first stop was at Mission Bay to see the enormous Jubaea's.
