Preventing Germination
by Kathryn- 4 replies
While pulling hundreds of unwanted volunteer seedlings yesterday, I recalled using a germination inhibitor (derived from a natural source such as corn) to prevent palm seeds from germinating in my beds. I looked for some at my local boxed store today but didn't have any luck. An on-line search didn't turn up anything either. Has anyone used such a product? Know where I can find some?

VIP Plantings
by Really full garden- 4 replies

As my beach garden has matured I have been able to create some new microclimates. This gives me the possibility to grow some palms that are not normally considered to be suitable for beach conditions. I have also added a new much more sophisticated irrigation system. September is the wettest and most cloudy month at the beach and so is a perfect time for planting . Here are a few of the VIP ( very important palms) Foxy Lady The taller one has been there for 5 years. The 2 new ones are 2m and 2.5m tall. Licuala sallehana

Coccothrinax, thrinax or ?

I acquired this palm as a Coccothrinax "hybrid" with no species id for the seed producing plant. I'm beginning to wonder if it might even be an error on the genus and if its actually a Thrinax. Any Caribbean region palm experience is appreciated.

Jim Wright's Sabal Seeds????????
by MattyB- 4 replies

I need some help. Jim Wright, long time SoCal palmtraordinaire, called me and wanted to know who we brought over for a garden tour that had mentioned that they wanted some of Jim's sabal seeds when they were ready. I can't remember who the heck it could have been. Jim said it was someone from Florida. He's searched through his guest book but neither him nor I can remember who it was. Anyone here remember that?

Herding the Zebra to a New Corral
by LilikoiLee- 4 replies

We are horrified at most of the palms we planted the 1st year of our palm addiction. All of the palms we planted back then are WAY too close together. Mike hates to transplant anything for fear it will die. Fortunately we successfully transplanted a Wallichia densiflora a couple of years ago. (Tim had to talk us down). It survived and is thriving in its new location which gave us the courage to move others. We really overplanted a very small area with several Cyphophoenix, a Hydriastele Obi Island and a Caryota Zebrina. I didn’t want to separate the different species of Cyphophoenix from each other and the Obi Island (I hope) will grow to a reasonable size. …

Ruffled Palm Fronds - Deficiency?
by nicholas99- 4 replies
We planted 12 small Livistona decipiens (formerly decora) in their endemic range here in Australia about 9 months ago with a combination of potting mix and the local good organic/clay soil on a moderately steep slope in full sun. A couple of them show individual palm fronds/leaflets that are quite "ruffled" (see photos here: https://goo.gl/photos/KE6GSVR29h48oRfS9 ). Is this a normal growth variation or indicative of a deficiency such as Calcium or Boron? If a deficiency, what's the best solution? BTW, we also have a triangle palm in a pot under greywater irrigation in almost full shade with a somewhat similarly ruffled frond/leaflets (see photos: https://goo.gl/pho…

Roystonea Royal palm seed viability
by dwimss- 4 replies
- 1.3k views
Hello, I got some fresh seeds from a royal palm (Roystonea Regia), and I'm wondering how long it takes to lose viability it's winter here I do have a green house but it gets cold during the nights (10-15 C / 50-60F). I think it's best to wait t'ill May and plant them during the hot period but I'm afraid that at this time they will lose their viability, In my experience most of palm tree seeds tend to lose viability quickly after harvesting. PS : During the day the temperature in my green house is around 30-35C / 85-95F sunny days only. What do you think, is it better to wait 6-7 months and plant them ?

Small Howea seeds
by Bennz- 1 follower

One of my Howea forsteriana has produced small seeds this season, it has been fruiting for years and this is the first time I have seen this occur. I expected the seeds to fall prematurely, but they have ripened up red just like normal seeds, but they are small and mishapen. I've never noticed this before, is it normal? Seeds higher up the tree are usual size, here is the small seeds with normal seeds held up alongside. The picture makes it look like normal seeds some close to the camera and some far away, but they are actually the same distance form the camera.
