Recycle Plastic Pots
by Phil- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
Having gone to our local waste disposal sites recently, I have been amazed to see the amount of black plastic pots that are being thrown away and not recycled. At our nursery, we always offer customers credit toward purchases for such old pots, or we'll even buy them outright. I encourage everyone to recycle their pots. After a little cleaning, they usually are almost as good as new. And, it's the environmentally correct thing to do. I know many of you will personally recycle, but encourage others with a more causal gardening habit to do so as well. Thanks. Phil Bergman Jungle Music Palms and Cycads Encinitas, California

With feather palms like, Satakentia. Kentiospsis O..., Sygrus coranta, Archontophoenix Tuckeri, Dypiss Pembana, Adonidia Vietcha etc... From seed or small seedlings , what size should these palms be, in 3 years time? Can any be planted in full sun ? Also, if seeds are planted outside, will they be able to take full sun when seedlings? As seedlings, what is ideal size of hole you should dig? Can sand collected from beach, be added to the soil ?

Acrocomia aculeata
by Eric in Orlando- 5 replies

Here at Leu Gardens we have 2 Acrocomia aculeata growing next to each other. They are about 40ft tall. They are young, they germinated from seeds in summer 1993 in situ. They have flowered for several years but right now both have a few inflorescences. They have a very strong fragrance, similar to Arenga engleri but much more musky. Has anyone noticed Acrocomia fragrance before? Heres a couple photos of the palms, I couldn't get one right now of the inflorescences as they hold the dead fronds and they didn't shop up well in a photo; http://new.photos.yahoo.com/leu4510....1 http://new.photos.yahoo.com/leu4510....2

Scale
by tjwalters- 5 replies
I have an early-stage scale infestation in the conservatory (all-glass living space, not a greenhouse) and am wondering if anyone knows of a natural predator I could use, since spraying inside isn't really an option. The affected palms are mostly Chamaedorea species so I probably could cart them outside to spray if we have a few warm days, but I would rather control them naturally.

Indoor Beccariophoenix alfredii
by Zeeth- 5 replies
- 1.3k views
So I hold the opinion that the Beccariophoenix group makes the most convincing imitation of the coconut tree, and also that the coconut in general makes for a pretty lousy indoor plant (unless under really good conditions). I was thinking that I should try a beccariophoenix alfredii indoors and see how well it takes to the indoor environment. Should I start it inside as soon as I get it, or wait until it develops pinnate leaves? Any other suggestions? Thanks Keith

Just won a palm on ebay
by MattyB- 5 replies
Hey, I just purchased my first palm on ebay. I threw a relatively low bid out there and forgot about it. I got an email notice that I won! Yipeeeeee. It's a Dypsis lastelliana but I thought it looked a bit different than others I've seen. That's why I bid on it. Anyone else think it looks different? I admit I haven't seen many at this young stage so I could be completely wrong. Either way, I got a nice healty palm because I get the one pictured he said.

Eco friendly insecticides with plant oils
by PalmatierMeg- 5 replies

Last weekend I decided to use Ecosense insecticide to treat my 1/2 dozen 1g Dypsis pembana seedlings for some scale. Apparently, these soapy/oily sprays kill the little varmints by suffocating them rather than poisoning them. I've been trying to steer away from chemical insecticides unless a plant is in dire straits. After spraying down my seedlings I put them next to the birdcage beneath my Adonidias. Last night I noticed one of the D. pembanas I'd posted on eBay had nasty tan splotches on its formerly green leaves. The others showed the same symptoms. First thing I did was end my auction item - fortunately no bids yet. Then I tried to figure out what was going on. Th…

Sommieria leucophylla seedlings

These tiny plants are in my greenhouse in Virginia. Even I have been reluctant to put them in the ground. They are glacially slow from seeds sprouted July 2010 (!) to the miniatures seen today. The last is a decent sized plant from Fairchild Gardens' greenhouse. These are the first palm seeds I've ever sprouted and I was happy to get 2 out of 10 since I haven't seen plants for sale. The tip browning on the oldest leaves prompted me to repot them about 6 months ago and the new leaves seem okay. Should I just try one in the ground in the mountains of Puerto Rico next April or just wait (and wait..) for them to get bigger in the greenhouse. Anybody growing these?

Areca vidaliana - Solitary or suckering?
by Eric F- 5 replies
- 2.5k views
A local nursery has what is labelled as Areca mammilata, which they informed me has been superseded as Areca vidaliana, but I wanted to find out from someone "in the know" if vidaliana is clumping or solitary? The plants in question are suckering already in 140mm pots, looking much like the triandras sitting next to them at the nursery, which prompted the owner to tell me that they might instead be triandra. Pictures from Fairchild seem to show a solitary palm, so I would like to confirm if this is a vidaliana or a triandra. Pictures available later today if needed.
