An Observation on Coconut Palm growth rates
by Really full garden- 5 replies
- 1.7k views
I arrived at my beach house late this afternoon with just enough time to make a drink and get into the pool to watch the sun drop into the Pacific.I did notice something that I had not noticed before and that is that the 40 or so coconut palms that I planted eight years ago as barely sprouted nuts are now equal to or larger than the eight mature cocos ( 3 - 4 m of clear trunk)that I had planted around my pool. After the expense of building the house I had little money left to spend on purchasing large mature coconuts and made do by planting sprouted nuts I found. There is now no difference between these two groups. Photos to follow ,its too dark now.

Palms to hold the soil?
by Cindy Adair- 1 follower

I am ready to try some plants to help hold the soil after my landslide. My question today is about possibly using my Arenga undulatifolia (still in a pot now) plus a bunch of torch gingers and an ornamental banana I also have handy? Full sun, more clay than I'd like in that part of my property. I would guess a clumping palm if any and I do have others like Cyrtostachys renda for example. I also have quite a number of choices of non palm trees and many miscellaneous ornamentals, if you nix the palm idea. I am hoping to use plants I already own rather than heading to a nursery. No wires above so I don't care how tall it might get. Thanks for your …

Transporting Arecas - 20 to 25 gal containers?
by Christopher Dillman- 5 replies
Morning, Currently I'm looking at purchasing from a nursery these 20gal Areca Palms that are about 5ft tall in pots. I need them to get to 7 or 8 ft tall, and was told to transport them into 25 gal containers. 25 gal is the max I can go for this particular spot in mind. Don't have the ability to plant in-ground unfortunately. Wanted to get a consensus if worth the hassle to transport for the extra 5 gal. Or.. just leave them in the 20 gal containers and see what happens in a year? Thanks! CD

I started with a smile, because that is how I felt inside when I read your posts, and saw your sign-ups! God, I love you guys! My palm-lovin' brothers are without peer We are the best of any botanical talk groups, because we are real human beings, with the emphasis on the "human!!!!!" It was a week that presented me with more lousy health news (I posted the details, over there, not to be redundant) but it was a major "BUMMER" Diagnosis. E-nuff said, oh, except: "many, many thanks and heartfelt gratitude!" from your So. Fla. buddy, Pablo, The Palm Doctor. Later, guys! (and oh yes, as David from La Habra expressed already: "HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!" to ever…

Something burrowing around newly planted CIDP
by newtothis- 5 replies
I bought and planted to 16" box CIDP that came from Cali. About a week after planting I notice every morning a little 1/4" to 1/2" hole at the base with a mound around it. I try to stab something down in it then step on the little mound and push the dirt back down, the next day it's back. I have seen Goliath beetles around here. If it was that dreaded palm weevil it would bore right into the side of the palm right? Is it too early to use some kind of systemic pest control?

Metroxylon salomomense
by Cindy Adair- 5 replies
This is one of my favorites! I believe the seed or a seedling was from Noel Pecunia leading to Sherry Ballester planting it on what is now our farm years ago. Noel recalled paying $5 per seed. He said he doesn't have any Metroxylons left because they aren't as happy with the drier/saltier air and full sun in Aguadilla where the Copernicias and Coccothrinax flourish. The pictures don't really show the steepness of the hill this tree enjoys. We need to use the nearby torch gingers for hand holds and in the wet season it's a bit tricky. The seat of more than one pair of pants got muddy as I slid harmlessly down the hill. Photography is a challenge too, but here a…

Dypsis prestoniana

Hi all, here is specimens from two collections, presumably north and south of their growing range, they are starting to look the same, but their reaction to the environment is significantly different, the heels on the ones that were from an Australian seed source are twice the size, and a different shape, they have all of the traits of 'big curly', tolerate a bit to much light, water, esp. the later, the reg, or northern var. dose not put up with the least bit to much hand watering, and I only water them if we've had a drought, suspected 'big curly first, two photos, first two are 59 months old, second two are 57.5 months old, Ed

Cyphophoenix nucele requirements
by tim_brissy_13- 5 replies
After a previous failed attempt at growing a Cyphophoenix nucele, I've ordered a variety of palms from Palms for Brisbane including this species. I've read that they grow on limestone cliffs, so I'm thinking that I may have used a mix not suitable for this species last time. I usually use a mix of premium potting mix, sphagnum moss and vermiculite, but this time I may need to raise the pH. Any tips regarding soil requirements or otherwise would be appreciated.

Roots vs. Hardscape
by Hammer- 5 replies

I just spent the last hour and a half trying to find an old thread here on PT. It had some excellent discussion on how close to place palms near pools, how aggressive the roots can be in pushing hardscape around and negatively impacting it in general. Since I couldn't find the thread to bump it and add these photos... Well here goes... These Howeas are in a shopping center not far from my place. The business that was there went under and the outdoor hardscaping was torn out. Including a stone covered block wall. You can see the footing in the photos. You can clearly see the mat of roots from the soil surface to about 12 to 15 inches down to the level of the …

Soft spot on the side of my palm tree.
by NoelAD- 2 followers

Hello. I recently moved into my home and there are quite a few palm trees in the yard. I’ve noticed one of them has a melon sized soft spot on the side that is dry and brittle. I cleared away the soft wood and the rest of the trunk is solid. I also noticed that there is a stump from a tree that was growing out of the base that looks to have been removed from the prior owner but I didn’t think anything of it until now because it aims over the fence towards the neighbors yard so I assumed it was removed due to overhang. Now I am suspicious maybe there is some sort of fungus that is causing the spot and worried for the overall health of the tree. Of anyone has any ideas on h…

I am concerned with the health of this triple trunk nolina nelsonii. I noticed the yellowing of the leaves about a month ago on one of the branches. I have no idea if it is salvageable or not but obviously would like to save it. I never water it since it is a desert plant and its root system is quite well developed. That being said, last year was a harsh winter and this summer was a harsh drought. I fertilize annually with Roots Palm Saver 6-3-6 every March. Appreciate any thoughts or suggestions?
