The last meeting of the Costa Rica Palm Society was held at the Bali House in Manuel Antonio on Sunday October 24,2010. There were 25 in attendance including some new faces. Our organization made over $200 from the palm auction alone. Many people renewed their membership for next year and we also signed up some new members. Since I hosted this meeting I did not have time to take photos but I finally stopped and snapped a few during the auction. That's a Bismarckia being auctioned.

LY Tolerant Cocos

I'm planning on planting a large number of Cocos at my place in the Keys and have been researching...in my searches I came across some references to two forms that have been startlingly resistant to Lethal Yellowing in African trials: the Vanuatu Tall and the Sri Lanka Green Dwarf, as well as a hybrid Malay Yellow Dwarf x Vanuatu Tall, which is apparently a little less resistant. The Sri Lanka Green Dwarf in one source was said to have had 100% survival in three trials where Malay Dwarfs were completely wiped out right next to them. Has anybody heard of these two varieties and is there any hope of finding them in the Florida trade? Otherwise I guess I'm going with Mayp…

It's that time of Year
by jimbiz- 4 replies

I usually build a temporary greenhouse out of 2x4s and plastic sheeting around my Bismarckia to keep it alive during the winter months. As my palm has grown, so has the size of the greenhouse, until it has reached the point that the space heater I bought at Home Depot for $30 several years ago can no longer do the job. Can anyone recommend the next generation greenhouse heater? The size of the greenhouse this year will be 10 x 10 x 12 (height). I'll appreciate anyone's suggestions!

What other kinds of palms could I grow?
by The-ZonePusher- 7 replies

I know there are many palms that can grow here, but I don't know there names. Can someone help me out? Here is some info that can help: Palms I know that grow here are: Queen Palms, CIDP's, both Washy's, True Date Palms, Sagos, Mexican Blue Palms, Butia's, and what I think are Majesty's and Bottle palms. Climate/Location: California's Central Valley- USDA-z9b With z9a winters every so often. I have seen many frost free micro-climates as well. Coldest winter on record was z8b.

D. pembana, H. indica. and Foxy Lady...

I just pried a Caryota urens out of the ground that was planted too close to my house. I now have a choice spot for something more fun and appropriate. I want to plant something with a bit of speed, can handle 75% shade until it reaches 16-20 ft, and then get full sun. Wind protection on all sides except north. I have the Topic Titled palms in 5 gallon size. The hole is about 4-5 ft from my house, and just left of my front door. A real strategic spot. I'm open to other suggestions but have no budget for anything of size.

Thrinax or Cocothrinax radiata
by GTClover- 5 replies
- 1.4k views
Hi All, Are these the same plant or different? I've done some research and some authors and sellers lump them together indicating that Cocothrinax radiata is a synonym for Thrinax radiata, but I thought they were different. There is a reference here saying the Cocothrinax has black or purple fruit while Thrinax has white fruit. What are the facts? Does anyone have photos of either or better yet both? My usual aurhority besides here is PACSOA and they have nothing on Cocothrinax radiata. Thanks, Susan

A Seed Out of the Past
by hanapalms- 5 replies

Occasionally, I come across palm seedlings, among my potted palms, that are germinations from abandoned seeds that have been given a year or two but did not germinate. Well, here is an empty seed casing that I found next to a seedling. I cannot remember what palm species name goes with this seed. I would appreciate some help in identifying this guy. Thanks in advance! The seedling has a rather short medium wide strap leaf with raspy edges.

Butyagrus eriospatha
by Nigel- 16 replies

I thought I would post an interesting story for Butyagrus lovers... Merrill should love this. I was in the mountains over the last couple of days and stayed at a very good nursery friends house. Last year he bought a Butyagrus, it was an ugly horrible yellow thing then , it has been transplanted to his nursery and is still an ugly yellow thing. Apparently it was growing together with Butia eriosptha and has always been yellow. I find it a very odd Butyagrus. The trunk and boots arrangemnt, being tightly packed remind of Butia, but it is without a doubt Butyagrus. I have in my mind it could be an F2. ( First and second pics ) I remember a similar plant at the beac…

My newspaper reports today that many trees including a whole line of juvenile coconuts planted recently along a stretch of road that is by the sea in the business district of Mumbai have been cut down to beautify the city ahead of Barack Obama's, (president of the U.S.A.), visit. It seems they were guilty of "not growing" and are to be replaced with date palms. I pass that stretch often and have seen the coconuts - not very pretty due to the effect of fronds being pruned for transportation but they were certainly not dieseased or unhealthy. Considering that the unfortunate juveniles were planted less than a year ago I don't know how much growth they were expected t…
