small palm burn comparison
by sonoranfans- 3 replies
I have some interesting observations on cold burn damage on small palms, all in the ground for 5+ months. the damage does not necessarily follow the rexputed cold hardiness of the adult palms, whcih I found interesting. After 2 days, the damage is starting to really show up on some small palms(>4' overall) that were all in the ground, all planted 5+ months ago. All were initially healthy, nice green, no yellow or spotting. They were well fed and fertilized just one month ago. The foxtail and foxy ladies were in particular a nice deep green. The temps went from 35 F at midnight to 30F at 7 am, but with a prolonged bout of 33F or lower(5-6 hours) All were covere…

Just curious if the various large sealing wax specimens that were in the ground in South Florida have survived this winter. I would be particiluarly interested to know how this one on Miami Beach is doing. At the time (2007) it was the largest one I had seen in the ground.

Help! My Coconut is Splitting Open

I finally made it back to our house on Green Turtle Cay and found a huge split in our biggest Coconut. Our local landscaper says he's never seen such a thing. Is there anything I can do for it? It seems healthy otherwise with one leaf not looking great but it's not the one above the crack. I hope it's not a goner It's quite dry inside the crack & shows no sign of rot. The crack was packed with sand and inhabited by fire ants, but I thinks they were taking advantage of the location. Or can ants do such a thing?!! Susan

At home, it is -3 oC right now after a morning low of -7 oC. No good for me. I am in Belize right now, on the tiny island of Caye Caulker. Here is the current weather: http://cayecaulkerweather.com/weatherdata/caye-caulker-belize-live-weather-data.htm As you can imagine, the locals are whining about how cold it is and wearing jackets. It was hilarious to go to the beach this afternoon and see European girls in bikinis soaking up the sun while grown men were shivering in coats. I'll attach a few photos showing the arrival by my friend Mike and I, and then get to photos of the only native palm, Thrinax radiata. It is called "chit" locally (hence the thread name)…

Pritchardia pacifica 1 2

I planted this P. pacifica last year, as a nice sized 1 gallon plant with large strap leaves, fully expecting it to perish in Winter. It spotted up pretty good, but due to a mild Winter, exceptional micro-climate, and very close proximity to a warming wall, not only did it make it through Winter, it's growing like a champion. Here's the large format still photography pictures from my hand held camera device.

Well, some of you all requested that I show a plan, and well, not now, because there's only one plan, to plant as many palms as possible at my place. BUT! I dug up some pix of old, to contrast with the new. Here's one (of old): The western boundary of my place, St. Patty's day, 2003. Those are D. baronii, among others.

How much sunburn can your palms handle?
by MattyB- 1 follower

Paul and I often notice how much people tend to uneccesarily baby palms along when they're young, first planted, or thinking that a "shade" palm can't handle any sun when, in fact, a lot of them do quite well in sun once established. A lot of palms are surprisingly industrious little buggers and if left alone to fend for themselves, they can adapt quite well. I was looking through some old pics and found some interesting shots of some tough love in the area of sun acclimation. Here's the infamous Lowes teddy bears there was a run on in December of '07. I lot of people waited until Spring to plant out, but I knew that getting them in the ground ASAP was the tough lov…

Just wondering if it's any value to put a wrap on some palms I'd hope to keep even if I can't get lights on them first. This would be more about cold (freeze) then frost.

Please add pictures (and opinions) of palms grown in pots, including oversized ones. They`re being grown extensively here in Brazil now and usually employed in open patios and terrace landscape, near pools. How about a super dwarf Cocos nucifera, grown in captivity?

Hi, I took these pictures of Acanthophoenix rousselii a few years ago. This species of about fifty palms are greatly threatened, they survive in an agricultural area between 600 and 900 meters asl in the south of Reunion Island. About fifteen years ago, some palm accustomed eyes were first puzzled by the seeds size -around four times bigger than the two other Acanthophoenix- and then by the abundance of the crown shaft. Since the species grows in a few gardens in Reunion. One out of the four I planted is still alive at my place; because of drought times and the fact that three were away from the faucet.

whats wrong with my foxtail?
by dp92651- 10 replies

Can someone please provide some advice re: my foxtail palm? Much of fronds have turned yellow-ish and it has developed odd brown spotting. Not on the tips as usual but at more of the bast of the leaflets (see picture). I moved it a couple weeks ago (it is potted), the spot that it was in gets very little light in the winter, it is now getting sun from about 11 p.m. onward. I live close to the coast. Thanks!

Today I am heading over to a friends house to dig up his Burretiokentia happala. He lives in the dryer foothills of Santa Barbara, and I will be relocating it closer to the ocean. I will be surprised if I can fir the rootball in a 24" box. The palm is currently over my head, and the new growing point would be about 5' tall. I will get some picture of the move. Has anyone had experience with transplanting a B.happala?
