Yellow New Leaves - Butia
by JimStPete- 20 replies
- 2.4k views
I've been planting hardier palms recently because of colder winters we've had the past 4 years or so. I planted this yellowing Butia last spring (along with the Butia of similar size just to the left of it in this picture). It was NOT yellowing when I planted it. The yellowing appeared later last summer while the Butia's to the left and right of it stayed dark green and grew very well. The yellowing has not affected the growth, it's growing pretty well. The newest leaves are yellow when they first come out. They slowly turn green with age. Is this a problem or just a variation on how these palms grow? I thought it might be a fungus so I started putting fugus p…

Hey! I had a few hours to kill today, so decided to put this together. It's about 220 palm species I have photographed over the last two years. It's not very user-friendly, so if you want to get to a species, they're organized alphabetically, and if you put the curser over the thumbnail, the name of the palm will appear. Click here for it!

Help with Ortanique Seeds
by GTClover- 1 follower

Has anyone germinated any of these? Should I use the baggie method for them all? Any special needs or advice. I know the Sabal will be easy, but I don't yet know much about the germination characteristics of the others. Do seeds sold as Dypsis sp 'Andavakaka' have another name? Also there seems to be some conflicting information about S. blackburniana. What species is it currently thought to be? It would be a shame if it turns out to be palmetto since they grow wild in abundance in Abaco... Thank you very much Joseph@Ortanique! Susan

Sabal to plant in my yard
by Patrick- 1 follower

I have a few Sabals I'd like to plant in my yard, but I'm still milling over which two out of three I want to go with out front. Largest to smallest I have a Sabal yapa 7 gal., S. x Texensis 2 gal., and S. Riverside 2 gal. I know, they're all pretty small, but you guys know how it is finding larger trees........... Does anyone have a large Texensis photo? Does it keep it's blue over time, or does it eventually green up? And lastly, which would you like to see most if you were to randomly drive by my house? Trust me, there's going to be BARELY enough room for two, so I HAVE to narrow it down. I'm thinking I'll try to stuff the third in the back somewhere.... …

Help Prevent Palm Torture
by Cindy Adair- 16 replies

All my new palms will be small (seedling to 1 gallon). All must be planted mid-April between the dry and rainy seasons in the mountains of Western Puerto Rico and left alone until August. They will do better in the ground than in pots. I'm only there a week so not really enough time to built shelters so I tend to err on the shady side rather than frying them. With that introduction I've tried to research my new palms, but found little to no growing information on some. The ones who might take shade I have as: Calyptrocalyx sp.'Sanumb'(fine leaf),Dypsis pachyramea,Iguanura tenuis,Licuala sallehana,Mauritia flexuosa,Pholidostachys. sp.,Pinanga maculata,Reinhardtia paiewonsk…

Howdyall: The Hamann garden certainly did rock, and I'm not done yet. But, first, some music. For the next, substitute the word "palms" for "drugs" And, that palm-related classic . . . . GUANTANAMERA! BY JULIO, THAT'S WHO-LIO ONWARD!

HAMANN GARDEN -- the New Big "H" 1 2
by DoomsDave- 56 replies
- 3.2k views
Howdyall: I realize that there have been some great pictures of the garden already posted, but, guys, gals, the unsure, this is a really kick in the tender-bodily-part kind of a garden. Seriously. This is where you can see for yourself what those oddball Dypsis from Floridbunda will eventually look like. But first, some music. Click on the link, then scroll through the pics. This garden NEEDS music. ONWARD!

The id game again
by fan palm- 12 replies

Hi all, was wandering if anyone can help me id a palm without pictures The palm in question is at my inlaws place and is about 6ft high from ground to leaf tip. It is pinnate and looks very Dictyosperma'ish' as it has red margins in the leaflets like D. rubra and the long fronds for its size. It has red/maroon petioles and crownshaft and the emerging spike also has a fair bit of red colouring. I didnt think the rubra had this much colouring red colouring or am i wrong? any other ideas? sorry for the lack of pics but i will try get some in the next couple of days but untill then... thanks Harry
