so many palm gurus on the forum, maybe some of you guys can share any special tips you might have. of course some of this will be a repeat that has been posted before - but it will be more handy to have a single thread - which contains a large body of information. I will kick it off: after trying different watering methods, I have found that the "flat soaker hose" wrapped in a coil works best for sandy soil. here is a brand that does not leak, is cheap and works great: Gilmour 27050G 5/8 x 50' Flat Water Sprinkler Hose so what growing tips do you folks have ?............

Brown bottle

This is what I did this year, to try to save it from defoliating again this winter. (Australia) I put a thin plastic wrap around it and over it, and mulch but not good enough. It was just to save it from the cold winds really Made no differance at all in fact it looks just like last year. lost its only two leaves. I can't undestand it , I see plenty around here with no protection ,with no problems. I wonder why? Any ideas?

A cultivated Pritchardiopsis jeanneneyi in bloom in France!

A member of our Ukrainian/Russian palm forum has alerted me to the news that a 29 year old specimen of Pritchardiopsis jeanneneyi is flowering in the Nancy Botanical Garden in France - http://www.bgci.org/resources/news/0836/ I believe this is the first time this ever happened in cultivation. I also believe that this is currently one of only two flowering specimens in the world. The other one being the sole seed producing tree in New Caledonia.

There are 5 species of Trithrinax although Henderson only recognises 3 ( acanthacoma and brasiliensis, schizophyla and biflabelata lumped). Kew does not currently recognise biflabelata. My understanding was that biflabelata was the only Trithrinax with out spines, whereas schizophyla has long spines on the trunk and sharp spines on the leaf tips. Toby at RPS seems to confirm this http://www.rarepalmseeds.com/pix/TriSch.shtml There is an 80 year old specimen of biflabelata at Florence BG that does not show any spines. Here are pics from Argentina that I was sent by a friend of T biflabelata that neither fits the RPS description nor is like the Florence palm, it is…

Leaves browning on seedlings ?
by The Silent Seed- 3 replies
For whatever reason, when I transplant Palm seedlings from their germinating cups, certain ones will "lose" all, or almost all, of their leaves - this takes days, and is not a gradual process - obviously some kind of shock or something - and I was wondering what might be going on. They are not in sun, and are kept moist throughout. We are talking about months-old seedlings, not 2-3 year olds. It's really frustrating, because there is no clear-cut issue that I can see. Has anybody else experienced this? Would being TOO moist cause this ? (To clarify; the leaves turn brown, but "dry out" as opposed to rotting/pulling.) Could they actually be too dry without my knowin…

Monster Butia x ??? Hybrid ID 1 2
by IdolLurker- 42 replies
- 6.9k views
I have a monster Butia x ? on steroids that may be a hybrid and I don't know the father - but this definitely isn't like any of the regular Butia palms by size, trunk and seeds. The fronds are not as blue as they look in the photo and are over 15 feet long. The palm height is more than double the size of other Butia's and the trunk is 36 inches in diameter. The seeds look just like the Butia x Jubaea and width about same as a quarter - at least double size compared to Butia. The seedlings are larger than any others - going on year 1.5 and almost 3 feet tall. Can you tell me if this is a possible Butia x Jubaea x Butia cross here? Any other ideas?

Chamaedorea tuerckheimii
by XYZ- 32 replies
- 2.9k views
Greetings: Wandering around the back garden in Guatemala early yesterday morning, I was struck by how nice large parts of my primary mother block of C. tuerckheimii are looking now that rains have set in. This is one section that gets very good light from dawn through to about 1000 hrs, and tree cover filtered light for the rest of the day. In any event, here is some "midget canopy" of mature palmlets ca. 1 m (3') tall. This material is about a decade old from seed. Sadly, the forests at the locality where these palms originated is no mas and ditto for the tuercks. This is essentially the only species of Chamaedorea that I grow that will not open pollinate with …

What´s happening to this Butia x Parajubaea.
by Alberto- 2 replies

All my BxP are growing like weeds. Also this one.The only problem is that this shows yellowing of the older leaves and they die earlier then the older fronds of the other BxP. Could it be lack of Potassium (kalium) or another illness or deficiency?

Here are a few photos of my c. hooperiana. I wanted to know if there is a chance the seeds will be viable. It is the only chamaedorea hooperiana I have. Is it a palm that will produce seed on its own or does it need a male and female plant?

I have only one of this palm.It was growing very well ,not slow like I´ve heard on this board. Some time ago it began to form weird looking fronds, without or only with few not well formed leaflets. Then it stopped totally .I repotted the palm last week.... This was the look today. I decided to make a ´´surgery ´´removing the dead´´center where there is suposed to be a speer. Removed the weird young fronds.....Drenched it with água oxigenada 10% (peroxide) What do you think????

MIKe ("Mikey") Edwards from Cairns, Australia
by Phoenix Bob- 3 replies

When my wife and I visited Cairns, Australia last March, we had the pleasure and privilege of having Mike ("Mikey" ) Edwards give us a personal tour of Flecker Botanical Gardens. It was a fantastic experience made ten times better by Mikey's vast knowledge about any and all things palm. I was truly humbled by his expertise. Our tour of Flecker with Mikey turned out to be one of the true highlights of our entire tour of the S. Pacific. After returning to the States, we kept in regular contact with him, but unfortunately we have heard nothing from Mikey in more than two months. Personal and I.P.S. emails have gone unanswered as have letters sent by regular post. I ha…

wodyetia bifurcata casualty?
by Randy- 19 replies

My three foxtails were hit with a 1-2 punch last year, first they were "trimmed" by a former landscaper who felt compelled to do the typical overtrimming / hack job. They also trimmed back the canopy that I always allow to grow over the trio for additional cold protection. After firing them, of coarse we had our extended sub freezing temps last winter. I took the usual time xonsuming measures covering them and the rest of what I valued in our landscape. Two out of the three show new growth this summer, however my largest and fattest one has one very healthy deep green frond with partial burn from the freeze, and the same short spear that hasn't grown larger than about…

Ravenea rivularis is notorious for dying after a good drenching with the hose. What other palms can't get their "crowns" wet with municipal water? Specifically, Is Jubaea chilensis susceptible to this issue?

Howea forsteriana

Here in Holland, Howea forsteriana is often for sale as a houseplant. Mostly offered in a container with three or more plants. Once and a while, one of those plants has brown petioles. They also seem to be a little bit more elegant then the normal green ones. Does anyone know whether this is a named variety? Wim.
