hello, been reading the forums regularly and decided to join. ever since i had my backyard landscaped by contractor and pretty much left it to them. with only having them include 3 canary island date palms and 1 mexican fan palms. i've been hooked. to be honest with you i know nothing about gardening. as soon as i figure out how to post pics i will. will like to share before and after pics. it's been 4 years since they have been planted and really i am amazed by their growth. i look back at pics from 06 and compare to now and it really amazing. believe me, i did nothing but water them and occasional feeding with miracle-gro. but i've reading and researching alot and it re…

Foxtail unusual spear development?
by Markie- 3 replies
Hi there I'm hoping for some advice as I'm a bit of a palm novice. I have a few foxtails all doing really well, new spears all shooting straight up and then opening. I have one however that the new frond is opening as it emerges. Is this ok or could it point to a problem? Heat in SoCal 1 2
by quaman58- 52 replies

Hey all, Just got finished with some quick overhead watering, attempting to bring the yard's humidity up during the night. Wow, there's a lot of sunburn from today. Although I was cooler than most places, the sun was still intense apparently, with little in the way of moisture to block it. And this comes at the end of the coolest summer since 1933, so the plants are just unable to cope. Pisser. The visual aspects of sunburn can last lterally for years on slow growers. How's everyone else doing? Bret

Another new dypsis mystery
by Steve Mac- 20 replies

I just bought a Dypsis at a plant auction labled Dypsis houitrendrima, or it could be houitrendrinia it is handwritten. It has meally bug looking long skinny stems, but I was assured at the auction that it is not the D hovomantsina 'meally bug" but another one. I will enjoy it anyway as long as it is not too slow, But I can't find anything by that name on the net. What do you think, too new? typo? usuall Dypsis confusion?

I'm going to try a few different mixes.. I purchased a few bags of sphagnum peat moss, perlite, garden amender and garden soil w/ moisture control. I'm gonna try a few different blends w/ existing clay soil to see what works best. I'm thinking about also doing a 50/50 compost to adobe clay mix. Has anyone found the optimum blend for the Socal area? Am I in danger of burning the roots if I put too much compost (50/50 or 70/30)? Thanks.

Need some IDs and advice
by Jubaea- 3 replies

Hello, I have been planting palm seeds the past few years and am not sure exactly what I have growing. I have a few seedlings that I would like to be identified if it is possible. I have several palms that I think are Jubaea chiliensis and some other fan palms that I am not sure what they are. Several of the palms are planted in the ground I am and wondering what would be the best time to dig them out and put them in pots. I'm hoping that I did not make a mistake in planting these in ground. The palms in the ground are growing much quicker than the potted ones. I did not expect that so many of them would germinate and begin growing. I am in Coastal Southern Calif…

BANNED MEMBERS 1 2 3
by PALM MOD- 117 replies

Some of you may notice a few PalmTalk members with the Group Designation of "Stumphead." These are members who for one reason or another have been permanently banned from PalmTalk. This is done instead of totally deleting them, with all their posts, and leaving "holes" in all of the topics that they have posted in. The most recent member you may notice with this designation is "Larabie." When Larabie registered, he was already a PalmTalk Member under another name. He apparently was using this duplicate account as a means to further promote palms he was offering for sale. The deceptive and underhanded manner in which this apparent self promotion was carried out wa…

Took a hike with a friend today near the Big Bend Gulf Coast here in North FL. We were on a mission to visit the Cathedral of Palms. It is one of the largest last standing virgin Palm Hammocks of the S. palmetto. Located in the St Marks Wildlife Refuge on the Florida trail. is is right on the bay and the breeze comes through all the fronds.its a wonderful mystical place. Pictures cannot capture it but I will try and post some findings I ended up finding 4 variegated Sabal palmettos one of which has a beautiful curved trunk with moss!

Momentus day in the garden
by Patrick- 5 replies

Today was a very special day in my yard. A very good one followed by many more to come, I'm sure. Drum roll, please..... Today, was the first day I actually relaxed underneath my palm canopy and just relaxed- it was great! Of course I was sitting down as low as I could and the palm fronds were 2 feet over my head- but it counts, RIGHT!!?? The Brahea edulis was on my right and the B. nitida was out about 10 feet to my right. Two Livistona decoras were in front of me and I was leaning up against the trunk of a Syagrus romanzoffaiana, drinking some barley sodas. I actually took a moment to think about what I wanted to plant under them, in about two years. Next ye…

Bismarck babies

I have 20 gal plastic totes that I have been starting my seeds in and decided to start potting up some more of my bizzies. Out of the 50 started 35 or so had roots through the bottom of the container that were severely damaged upon removal. Are these destined for the compost heap? I have another tote of mixed green and silver coming up, and just got another hundred silver seeds. So I'm not hurting for bizmarcks, but if their is a chance for rescue I would like to save 'em. In the future I will have to keep a better eye on them, and get them when they first pop their seed. Thanks for any help, Brian

Ravenea xerophila

I have a pretty large seedling.. no trunk yet but it's about 6' tall and all leaves... I would like to move it, but not heard how touchy these are.. I dug a bit around its roots and they are HUGE... and very soft (cut into them in one spot just with my fingers). No signs of rot (though maybe now there will be). Plant is very healthy looking, but I need to move it into more full sun. But not if I am just going to kill it.

Chambeyronia hookeri, C. Houailou
by cagary- 5 replies

Neither Chambeyronia hookeri nor C. houailou are "accepted" names according to the Kew website. C. hookeri is described as a synonym of Chambeyronia macrocarpa and C. houailou isn't even mentioned. Do you think that one day we will at least see them described as Chambeyronia macrocarpa var. (or subsp.) hookeri and the same for C. houailou? Do you think these two should be classified as a synonym, variety, subspecies or even a new species?
