like the z's discussed earlier, I have a h.v pushing a new leaf that are much shorter and wavy at the petiole. What is odd is this is the 2nd spear after winter and the 1st was normal. It was brought into the garage on days below 32F and never browned.

Blooming Fishtail - Fell Over Last Night
by Palmaholic John- 15 replies
- 1.4k views
I need some advice. During a storm last night, my Caryota urens tipped over....roots are exposed and broken on one side. It wouldn't be too difficult to prop up; however, since this monocarpic palm had already started flowering, I'm wondering if its roots have stopped growing as did the leaves. Anyone know?

Livistonas

Which Livistona species grow fastest and produce the densest crowns of fronds? I want to plant some palms that will ultimately shield my property from the electrical substation to be built a 1/2 block west of my home. As of now, LCEC has put up an 8' block wall that it has attempted to tastefully paint and landscape. But I know eventually the utility will install one of its "erector sets" inside the compound. I have no desire to view that. So I am looking ahead too. Conditions that these Livistonas should expect: Sandy beach soil (but I will fertilize, etc.) 7 months of highs at or above 90F (32C+)and lows above 72F. Sweltering humidity nearly year round Wi…

A lot of palms have really colourful inflorescences. Even more have colourful infructescences. I have seen some stunning Dypsis, Ravenea and Pinanga inflorescenses, to name a few. I thought it would be good to start a thread along the lines of 'new red leaf', except with other palm colour... Here's a couple of mine that are starting to show their true colours... Basselinia gracilis Carpentaria acuminata Please add your photos... Daryl

I have a small chambeyronia hookeri I planted in the ground about a year ago. I has put out 2 new fronds and they came out green, not red. Will it ever throw a new red leaf or will it stay green forever? It is still small so if it will never get a new red leaf it will go to the pile. Here is the picture of the small palm. Thanks

New Backyard Project
by Palmzilla- 17 replies

Thought I'd share some pics of a new project my father (POGO) and I are working on. The other day we tore up my backyard in the goal of creating a river that runs across the yard. We brought in 15 yards of soil, mostly consisting of DG (decomposed granite). We pounded a few beers and went nuts and dug a long trench across the yard for the future river. After we shaped 3 giant mounds we jammed to the local rock yard and bought 5 tons of Arizona river rock! I super excited how it turned out and can't wait to fill it up with awesome plants! I've planted a few big cycads so far but have lots of expansion to be done still. Here are the pics: Braden de Jong

Cocos nucifera in the subtropics
by brattle_007- 10 replies

How many people are growing Cocos nucifera in the cool subtropical winter climates on this forum. I'm hearing that people are having success with the following information: It will take slower growth below 20C, just as long as the nightly minimum temps is above 10C and the soil is try. Even slightly lower temps in front of a bright south facing wall.

Royal Ouch

One of my neighbor's 40 ft Royals had a major meltdown, seemingly overnight. My guess is lightning, as we are finally getting into our rainy season, although I don't see any damage on the trunk or any nearby foliage yet. Any other ideas? This was a tall beauty, which probably added to it's demise. Randy

Sick CIDP
by Jim in Los Altos- 13 replies

This sad looking Phoenix canariensis was transplanted about seven years ago from a location several miles away by way of a large crane by a professional palm tree mover. Its rootball was 6 feet by 6 feet by 3 feet deep and it was planted on 18" of coarse sand in an 8 foot by 8 foot by 4 1/2 foot deep hole. Those small fronds are pretty much the only leaves produced in all these years. The tree produced no new leaves for nearly a couple of years after being planted. It's planted near a lawn and has a mixture of healthy foliage and flowering plants at its base to a few feet out. Any ideas as to what is going on here? The palm has been fed at typical intervals but does n…

Are Pinanga Aristata stilt root palms?
by Gbarce- 2 replies
- 2.2k views
I noticed that most of my Pinanga Aristata seedling were always tipping over. I took a closer looks and It was because the new roots were staring higher up in the trunk like in and Exorhizza or Iriatea. Is this normal? Should I prop it up with a stick or just add more soil till it reaches the roots?

My Wife's best friend Tina (and husband Ken) moved from Northern England to Portugal last year and asked if we could help create a garden with trees and lots palms. With an invitation like that we could not refuse so we visited them after our grandson, Oliver , was born in London. Jason invited Tina and I to visit him and his garden. What a generous host he is, he spent many hours explaining in detail the trees she could grow, what protection from the heat and cold they give. Not only that Jason ran around with a shovel, digging up excess trees and other interesting plants for Tina. I had a very excited Tina in the car on our way back to her place with a carload of plan…

Calling all dypsis experts!!! I have a couple of Dark mealy bug Dypsis and One Dypsis Pulelifera (orange crush?) that I am planning to put into the ground this week. I understand that these get huge so how far from the wall should I place them ? How far apart from each other? While we are at it I have a few Dypsis White petiole too that I should start look spots in the garden for already too--How far apart should these guys be spaced?

Phoenix dactylifera Clustering?

In my town there are hundreds of CIDP and DP. But there seem to be 2 that stand out from all the others. 1 is the CIDP with red/purple fruit. I had asked this question why on another forum and someone refered me to this thread about the matter on palmtalk. That is how I found you guys. It completely informed that it is a hybrid form of this tree. Here is the original thread. Well I have 1 more to ask about. This is on a Phoenix dactylifera, standard date palm. This 1 seems to be a clustering 1. Is this a hybrid form of it or have i mis-i.d.ed it.

Beccariophoenix alfredii
by brattle_007- 1 reply
Well from my experience of germinating seeds of Beccariophoenix alfredii, the soil needs temperatures in the high 20s to 30s, for it to germinate. After sprouting, the soil high temperature still needs to be maintained to develop the rooting systems and the first leaves. Soil temps in the teens will stop early growth.

Yesterday I went to one of my favorite nurseries to take advantage of a sale. After jamming 8 palms into my wife's' Mazda, I had a look around. It was a breezy, sunny and quiet June Saturday and everything looked fabulous. Had my camera on hand so I took some pics. This is what I saw. The show piece Dypsi onilahensis. Dypsis ?? and Parajubea Dypsis scottianna...orD.affinnis? Hear different names on this one.

Palms for Planted Ripariums (?)
by hydrophyte- 37 replies

I joined just a few days ago. Thanks everybody for the warm welcome! I got a lot of great suggestions for a thread that I started asking about small palms for indoor growing and super-hardy possibilities for my area (USDA Zone 4b-5a). I have a few other more specific questions about species and variety suitability. For some time I have been involved in the devlopment of a new kind of aquarium display, the planted riparium, which combines emergent aquatic plants with aquarium fish and everything else. Here is a picture of a riparium planting that I had set up a while ago in a 50-gallon tank. This setup looks superficially similar to a terrarium or paludarium d…

Repotted a few more favorites
by Gbarce- 19 replies
- 2.9k views
The rainy season is the best time to plant and repot and since a lot of my specimen plants are just about bursting out of their current pots I'm in the middle of potting a lot of these guys up. I started with a couple of the licualas here's more: Iguanura Elegans I re planted this one in a much wider pot. Iguanuras are suppose to be clustering and I want to give it space for its suckers to grow This one I planted in a not much wider pot but a distinctly taller one. This seedling is a lot smaller than the other one despite being the same age. I notices that a lot of roots were starting out higher alongthe trunk but dried up before hitting the soil. Must…

Please Suggest Unusual Small Palms 1 2
by hydrophyte- 1 follower

I am new here. I have never really grown palms but suddenly I want to start a collection. I live in a modest small house in USDA Zone 4b-5a, so my options are limited. I plan to try out the few cold-hardy selections that might be able to make it here with protection, but I am more interested in smaller houseplants and really small palms that might work for terrarium culture. I also want to learn more about short-statured semi-aquatic species because I have a couple opportunities (not in my home) for planting in warm indoor ponds. Do you have any suggestions for species and sources? I am a true neophyte so I would appreciate any ideas. It doesn't look like they are…
