All quiet on the Rio front
by RainForestt Robert- 15 replies
- 1.2k views
Hey, isn't the Rio biennial going on this week? I know that I am not on Palmtalk as much as previously but I thought that I would have heard something from an attendee by now. In Costa Rica PalmTalkers were lining up each evening and morning for the PCs to get their daily fixes and some could not resist saying hello. I hope that this is not like Vegas! Holler at your pals. Let us know how much fun we are missing. Talk lots of photos and at the first opportunity - POST! Robert

Overgrown's Official General Interest Thread 1 2
by OverGrown- 68 replies

One of the things I love about gardening is all the unique tastes and styles. I spent the last week in LA for the holidays and snapped a few pics while walking my dog to remind me of home and how good we have it in LA. The area gets 100+ dry heat during summers, santa ana winds during fall, adobe clay soil w/ gophers as the main pest. Standouts in the neighborhood: This house has the only triangle palms in the neighborhood. Caryota and foxtail in between some queens Nice mix of common cycads

I have a T fortunei that I planted back in 2002 that has come into flower and produced fully formed seeds. The thing is Trachy's are meant to be dioecious needing a male and a female to procreate. There is not another Trachy for miles in my neighbourhood. What do you think has happened? Who's your Daddy Momma???????? Best regards Tyrone

Winter of 2010 Pleasant Surprises
by _Keith- 6 replies
Winter of 2010 was tough. Three nights in a row right at 20 degrees, and more than I cared to count in the upper 20s. There were many losses, but still, even in this bad spring drought, there are a few surprises out there. Non of these has any protection at all. Total exposure. Palms My largest P. robellini is pushing a new spear. I had written it off. P. reclinata is pushing a new spear. My smallest Mule Palm, which had a spear pull, is pushing a new spear. Arenga engleri is pushing several new spears Non-palms Erythrina christa-galli is returning from the roots. Silk floss tree is sprouting at the 2 foot level. Varigated Lemon is returni…

Need ID On This Pinnate Palm
by Jim in Los Altos- 9 replies
Hope someone can ID this palm. Actually, I'm sure one or more of you can because I think it's probably fairly common. I bought it three years ago a a big box store and it was labelled Areca cetachu and had two trunks at the time. One trunk died in the 2007 freeze but the other faired well and has grown steadily. I can't grow any Areca in any microclimate in my yard since they rot during our damp cool winters but this one never stops growing, albeit slowly. What is it?

California Palms to see in only 2-3 day visit???
by Cindy Adair- 8 replies
We'll be making a quick trip from Virginia to deliver our daughter to Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, CA in early August. I understand Claremont is about 35 miles from LA. We'll have to fly in and out of Ontario,California airport and can probably squeeze in only a couple of days (after leaving our freshman daughter) before we must return to work (to earn money for her college and palms..). We love botanical gardens and buying small, rare tropical palms(or any unusual small size tropical trees, orchids, bromeliads, etc. etc.)that can fit on planes as luggage. We will probably get to visit a few more times over her 4 years and would greatly appreciate suggestions of side…

Pruning Roots of Roystonea regia ?
by Kumar- 1 reply
Hello everyone - I have two ten year old R. regia specimens growing in my lawn in Calcutta, India - and the favourable soil and humidity there have resulted in these palms becoming huge! Their roots however are all over the lawn - and though I have had them pruned twice in the past, at two year intervals, they keep regrowing with remarkable tenacity and I suspect they hamper the growth of vegetation for ten-fifteen feet around their base. One of the local forest department officials has suggested (vaguely, I may add) that the pruning needs to be done from the base of the stem to have any effect. I'm wary of weakening the trunk though - it's more than thirty feet hugh now …

Fan-Palm ID
by mcwolf- 27 replies
- 1.7k views
Hi, first I'd like to re-introduce myself since I haven't posted in this forum for a couple of years. I'm a German immigrant to South Africa and I live for almost a decade in Cape Town. I learned a lot when reading in the forum and maybe that's why I started to question the ID of this palm. What do you guys think of it? Thanks for your help and don't worry asking me if there is anything I can contribute. Cheers, Wolfe

Really not a fun palm to remove vines from, but interesting nevertheless. There's a foxtail palm barely visible. Fortunately the spiny one is off the main path a bit.

Dypsis saintelueci & D. onilensis
by PalmatierMeg- 13 replies

I planted both these little Dypsis in my shade garden last year and they have been limping along ever since. They survived winter which didn't help their status. I ameliorated the planting medium with compost when I put them in. I've tried palm fertilizer with minors (Lesco), additional magnesium, fish emulsion, whatever I could think of to boost their nutrition. I'm beginning to suspect they are allegic to FL. What do you think? Suggestions for helping them? I'm out of ideas. Dypsis saintelucei Dypsis onilahensis

Metroxylon salomonense
by Cindy Adair- 12 replies

Any ideas as to the age of this palm? What I really mean is will it flower and die in my lifetime or will that be for my kids to see? Yes, that's me in the hat and 2 of my 3 children in the next photo. I'd like to plant at least one Metroxylon amicorum if it's true that they don't succumb after flowering? Any idea where to find seeds or a tree? The "spines" at this age anyway aren't fierce, more like bristles than the wicked Astrocaryum murumuru we have! This tree somehow makes me think a dinosaur could walk by at any moment.

Welcome to the Jungle!!! 1 2

While in LA my second garden tour was from Dave. This is my second time visiting and it was a lot easier to process the names and ID's of each palm. The first time I visited I was so overwhelmed I lost my bearings. The great thing about his garden is it is located just about as far away from the ocean you can get without being in the dry inland where I have my garden on the the other side of the hill. Same hill different conditions. I can appreciate the pioneering of possible species in the area. Thanks Dave for the inspiration. Dave standing next to a Parajubea for scale... I think this is my new favorite palm. Overall shot of the east front yard. Ove…
