Palm identity please
by tropicbreeze- 4 replies

Anyone care to show their expertise in identifying this palm. The photos are in habitat. I believe they'll be the same species, though don't really know that. They were growing possibly in the 1000 to 1500 metre altitude in the Owen Stanley Ranges, Papua New Guinea, circa 8 degrees south lat. The two plants were growing on opposite sides of the mountains, but I'm just estimating altitude, will have to check back in my notes and topo. map to be certain. Never saw any of what might be called adult plants. In fact, the areas these were in seemed fairly devoid of other palm individuals. Thanks. This one growing southern side of main range. Growing northern side of…

Trachy Seeding... Again!
by Randy Johnson- 10 replies
Hello again! Here's a picture of my apx. 7' Trachy in its third season here in "north" Alabama. Now for the fun part. And I know I'm about to show my ignorance in palm-ology ....and probably outright disrespect for the species. But, nonetheless, here's my question: As of last year, my tree started popping out these ugly (eye of the beholder) pods each spring. Is it safe for the health of the tree to simply cut them off once they elongate past the trunk? There are at least 10 of them already peeking out. Thanks much! Randy

Palm honey
by Gileno Machado- 16 replies

One of my closest friends, old buddy from Engineering College who knows of my love for palms, has recently been to Santiago, Chile, on vacations, right before the horrible earthquake from last month. Well, he brought me a strange souvenir...a small can of Palm honey...from the pictures in the label I believe it comes from Jubaea chilensis fermented sap...the label doesn't mention though... Now I'm still undecided about tasting it or not...I hope I'm not indirectly contributing to the reduction in number of this beautiful species, which may be threatened by the sale and consumption of this type of products, considering the (most certain) destruction of the old palms in th…

Foxy Lady and Foxtail Palm
by dp92651- 5 replies
- 1.9k views
I am looking for some info regarding my foxtail and newly acquired foxy lady seedling. I live on the ocean in Laguna Beach, CA. My foxtail palm is growing but the leaves are brown on the tips. Any reason why this is occurring? I am fertilizing and providing it with ironite in addition. Also, I just purchased a "foxy lady" on ebay. Is there any way I can be sure this is, in fact, a foxy lady? Does anyone know what the growth rate is in coastal California. Thanks in advance.

Three acres on the Big Island

No palms on the property yet, but there is plenty of room. The land is at 690' in altitude so there should be a good variety of palms that can be grown there. The 100 inches of rain a year will help. There's also a nice house on the property. Its in the Orchidland sub division. There are some good property deals to be had on the Big Island right now. Come on over and have a look! Here's some photos. Most of the land is behind the house in the first photo. View from lanai

Finally planted my three ramsayi palms today. Mister big I've been growing for about 4 years and transplanted from Jacksons Jungle back in BrisVegas. The other two are house warming gifts from my ratpack friends, thank you, thank you, thank you. These two lil guys were raised in their homeland at Mission Beach. I've been planting heaps of late and just haven't had the camera handy, so here's the ramsayi trio by the mango trees.

Digging up Chambeyronia Macrocarpa: Bad idea?
by James Agren- 1 follower

I'm thinking about digging up and moving my Chambeyronia macrocarpa. It's just getting way too much sun where it sits now. Have you ever done this? Is the species capable of easily surviving this or is it too risky? It was planted just over a year. It was a 15 gal. It's 5' high at the tip of the spear and 5" at base. No doubt heavy and wet at the root ball. Two of three fronds are badly sun damaged. The third is pale but healthy enough. I could alternately plant out around it to give it a bit more shade but where it sits would still leave it exposed to long, bright, afternoon sun in the summer. Please advise. Mahalo, James

I killed my Pinanga speciosa
by MattyB- 39 replies
- 3.6k views
Well, here's what's left of the base of my Pinanga speciosa! It suffered pretty badly through the winter, even in the greenhouse and had lost all but the newest leaf. It was also a bit musy around the stem's base and oozing some sap. So the whole thing got drenched w/ Daconil and I was hoping that with warmer weather it would pull through another year.

Uplighting palm trees
by Hollywood Palms- 0 replies
- 1.8k views
Hi All, I've seen fixtures in Hawai'i, but not in California, that mount 3/4 of the way up a palm tree trunk, about 15-20 feet up the trunk. There are usually 3 or 4 lights, attached to a metal ring, that point upwards, to the crown and fronds of the palm. I am not sure if the lights are low or regular voltage. It's a great look, without having to install in-ground spots. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks! David

My Garden on Green Turtle Cay 1 2
by GTClover- 56 replies
- 3.5k views
Hello Palm Experts, a couple of you have asked about my garden on Green Turtle Cay (pronounced 'key'). As I said in an earlier post, Green Turtle Cay is a small key off the coast of Abaco which in turn is one of the 'Out Islands' of the Bahamas and is 135 miles due west of West Palm Beach, FL. It's zone 10b-11. For me, one of the reasons we built on GTC was to have a place to plant and enjoy palms and other tropical plants (for my husband it was fishing and boating). I thought I'd show some before/after photos. And I hope some of you will have a lot of recommendations for additions! Here's where we are: We bought the land in 2002 and this is prett…

Robusta question
by wxman- 5 replies
Hey guys, I got this robusta last fall for free from the local garden center because they had it just planted outside and they were gonna let it die. So I took it home and potted it up. It went into transplant shock and lost all but 1 frond, but regrew 3 over the winter in my basement lighted plant room. I planted it outside three days ago and it has been in the 70s during the day and 50s at night with partly sunny skies. The problem is, that it's starting to feel "rubbery" to me and the petioles are twisting funny. It's leaning all to one side (the direction the wind is blowing toward). The trunk feels rubbery near the base, the petioles feel rubbery and can b…

Jubaea Chilensis

I remember i saw in other topics some nice visuals of jubaeas, one of them, grown, was in an excellent yard, from a white looking hair man, maybe in S. Francisco. Anyway, i did not find any previous topic dedicated exclusively to this palm. Recently, as i have already posted on other topic, i bought a maybe 10 years old jubaea chilensis. I knew it is slow growing, and i made an investment, just to assure i 'll be waiting less than i would !

I have tried everything short of psychotherapy. I am an addict. Admission is the first step to recovery. I swore I would not or can not buy any more palms....but here I am contemplating purchasing more seeds or seedlings for a garden that is already maxed out. I have some 300 species in a normal residential lot (60x130) all jockeying for position and sunlight. I didn't want my garden to turn into a "collectors" tossed salad, but here I am. I have actually bought a palm instead of eating lunch. I have a problem!!!
