Slow release palm fertilizer
by basilios- 12 replies
- 2.5k views
In my country palm culture is very limited (although there are thousands and thousands of CIDP, washingtonias and trachycarpus...but that's about it), so there's no way I could find specialized palm fertilizer in the local market. During the past 3-4 years I've been buying from an american company (Nutristar)but I'd like to try something new. So, does anyone know of a company that sells slow release palm fertilizer and would ship products to Europe (Greece)? If it's a european company, even better (lower shipping costs). Thanks!

Fertilising Palms
by chris.oz- 16 replies

I have spent 8 years improving the sandy soil on my patch. For years I just used dressings of mulch. Some areas of the garden have 4-5 inches of rich friable loamy topsoil However in some cases palms have failed to "thrive" in the sandy soil. On the other hand several blocks away a neighbour has used heavy application of animal manure annually and had very good looking palms. In the last 2 years I came to realise that the soil is too poor and leaches easily and may have pH problems as well but I have found that heavy handed application of chemical fertiliser can cause death and this has made me tentative about fertilising using other than animal fert. Because…

Dypsis leptocheilos x decaryi ???
by PalmatierMeg- 12 replies
- 3.1k views
On Friday after work we drove over to the FL east coast and stayed the night in anticipation of a palm sale at a Homestead nursery. We also stopped at several other places until we filled our Element (2:30 p.m.) then drove home. On Sunday we planted several of our purchases. The find of our trip was this gorgeous Dypsis we got for $35. Initially, I thought it was a Dypsis leptocheilos but someone told me it is a teddybear/triangle cross, which, if true, would be a bonus. What do you all think? Dypsis leptocheilos x decaryi (is it?) Closer views of trunk I also found this Dypsis sp red crown Licuala filiformis aka triphylla, seeding Pinanga caesia r…

Dypsis pembana

This palm has done surprising well for me. Not only is it very fast growing, but withstood 31F for at least 8hrs with only a little leaf burn. Then it puts out it's first bloom. I hope it sets seeds. Does anyone know if it does set seed if the offspring will be all singles like the parent or will they be a mix of singles and clumpers?

Suggestions for replacing lost Foxtails
by sf34711- 15 replies
- 1.2k views
Hi guys, I've unfortunately lost 6 foxtails over the winter here in Central Florida (see http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=21756 for the sad pics if interested). Do any of you have any suggestions for something relatively cold hardy (hardier than the Foxtails) that can go in as a replacement? Here are a couple of photos that show the area before winter. The corners of the yard are mirrors of each other (we had 3 foxtails in each corner, roughly 15ft tall for the large one, and around 8ft for the 2 smaller ones). Thanks for any suggestions! Steve

Golden cane palm seeding in Sydney
by Steve Mac- 11 replies
- 1.7k views
I have seen many Dypsis lutescens around Sydney but have just seen one seeding for the first time, and I am wondering just how common it is. It is on a main road in full sun with little protection near a northerly facing house wall. The property appears to be rented with no care given to the front yard devoid of garden. Maybe they like this treatment?

Well, Google finally got around to updating my house in November. Here is the before and after. My house is the one at the top in the middle and my garden spread from there down to the field filled with canariensis. It's not very jungle-like yet, but it's coming around. B4 After

I collected pollen from the Syagrus glaucescens (stored in the fridge) and I have just now a ripe inflorescence on my Butia catarinensis ,a very compact plant, silver ,wider leaflets then my other catarinensis and also stiffer. Syagrus glaucescens are aso silvery and with VERY stiff upright leaflets. How thie hybrid between this two palms will look? Future will say! I have a lot of pollen and I will also cross my native queen palms. This also will produce a very unusual ,compact ,cold hardy XSyagrus......

CIDP or Reclinata (differences in a young palm)
by Afripalm- 16 replies
- 1.7k views
About a year ago I stumbled on what appeared to be a P. Reclinata at a sale in my local nursery. It was the only palm of its kind on sale and not labeled. As it was a doubler (a smaller pup alongside the larger palm), I assumed it was a clumper and therefore Reclinata. A year down the line I am not so sure any more! Compared with my Reclinata, the spines are stout and shorter than the Reclinata's and the tips of the fronds are not recurved in the same way. The spines also have a more yellow tinge and it is altogether a more regular shaped palm than my hap hazard Reclinata. Does anybody have a definitive method of differentiating the two? I think I may be transplanting…

Had a terrific visit with Stephen and family, wanderanwills, who lives north of Sydney, last weekend, we went for a sight seeing tour, came around a corner, and there they were, on the side of the road. Seeding Livistona australis, of course we had to stop and get some. The seeds were layered on the ground between tree bark and leaf litter up to 12cm deep (4-5inch's For the USA members). We found seed on the top of the mulch, then 2 cm below, then more further down between the layer of forest debris. Stephen took these pictures, unfortunately did not have my camera with me, Stephen was really there First thing found a fake eyeball, somebody is always watching …

We all (BPACS including Ratpack) visited a nice garden in the southern suburbs of Brisbane today. It was a beautiful day, humid and 30c (86f), perfect for viewing palms. The garden is the creation of two of PACSOA's unsung heroes, Will and Margaret Kraa, who do mosyt of the administration of our society out of the generosity of their hearts. The garden has been under development for the last few years and is stsrting to get some maturity to it now, with many lovely palms and cycads. Hope you enjoy the photos...Wal and Brod have a stack of them too! Daryl Here is our group, just starting on the 2 + hour garden tour...

Any experts on Fusarium in CIDPs
by Justin- 13 replies
- 1.4k views
I haven't trimmed any green or yellow fronds since I purchased the palm 6-7 years ago. The palm has looked good the whole time, but this month I noticed a couple of fronds higher up the crown that are brown. Now fortunately, they appear to be "evenly" brown, as opposed to just one side. That being said, they could have browned half at a time and I just didn't notice. Also fortunately, its just two fronds halfway up the crown - all of the ones at the bottom seem to be okay. So I want to get an "expert" out here to take a look, and tell me if I'm looking at Fusarium, some other disease, or just a couple of bad fronds. Any recommendations?

Kaihoka Lakes nikau

For anyone looking for a R. sapida with wind and drought tolerance this nikau provenance from the northernmost tip of NZ South Island has to be one of the best. Can grow on sand in a very summer-dry area in constant wind from the Tasman Sea, and still look great. Check out these great (copyrighted) pictures; http://www.40south.co.nz/search.htm?page=1&category=&keyword=nikau-palm-%28rhopalostylis-sapida%29

Foliar micronutrient application "malfunction"
by ThunderSRQ- 19 replies
- 1.7k views
Has anyone else had a very bad result from a very standard foliar micronutrient application? I just "smoked" an otherwise relatively healthy Dypsis crinita just by applying very common foliar fertilizer/micronutrients. I used Miracle Gro all-purpose (24-8-16) at the label rate (1 tablespoon per gallon) and Super-Thrive at a "restoration rate" (1/4 teaspoon per gallon) on many of my palms and shrubs to help them "kick back into gear" after the devastating winter. However, this D. crinita, which made it through the winter "OK" (had a few brown leaves but nowhere near a major impact), looked like I had sprayed it with Round-up just a few days later (all leaves completly b…

Foxtail cold damage - any hope?
by sf34711- 29 replies
- 8.2k views
Hi there, I have 6 foxtails (4 small - around 8ft, and 2 larger around 16ft), that were all damaged by the recent 2 week cold snap in central Florida (lows of upper 20s). They were covered, but it didn't seem to help much. All leaves have turned brown. This is their first winter, so I dont know how they will respond. Is there any hope of them recovering (photo attached)? Many thanks for any help and advice. Steve
