The Good The Bad and The Ugly

I have always been a big advocate of growing palms that i think have a good chance down here but occasionally some slip under the radar and don't perform as expected . Ok here are 3 palms that i have had for a while -some are just not suited to Tasmanias climate ! THE GOOD Grown from a small sprouted seed 2 yrs ago -powers away all through winter ! THE BAD Archontophoenix purpurea Just sits there doing nothing no matter what i do ,fert , fungicide -even the greenhouse is no good , (Alexandrae grows well here though go figure??) The Ugly Arenga engleri Refused to grow in the last 12 months at all ?? reckon it ne…

Cold Weather Palm Garden

I am guessing this hotel is Zone 9a normally, probably zone 8b last winter. Yet, the garden looked great this weekend. Here are a few shots. These are full size sabals rear, not sure on the front palm, on top of a 4 story grotto with a swim in bar at the pool level. Awesome gardens, and I might add, a great place to stay as well.

My Neighbor is going to take out a large Brahea edulis, 15 feet of clear trunk and a really perfect specimen. Can these be transplanted? It seems like a shame to just cut it down. Matt

PALMS WANTED FOR EPIC PALM SPACE
by DoomsDave- 31 replies
- 2.6k views
Hello, everyone: As you may know if you're in the PSSC, Mile Square Park, has a "Palm Island" display of rare palms. MSP is located in the City of Fountain Valley, in Orange County near Huntington Beach. What you may not know is that one of our long-standing members, Ralph Velez, has established a relationship with the management of Mile Square, which will allow palm lovers to plant palms outside the relatively limited Palm Island area. Mile Square Park is literally that, a mile square on each side, plenty of space. This could be one of the world's epic palm places. All that's needed are more palms! The potential here is enormous. Broad lawns are watered …

A few pictures of my palms
by amazondk- 30 replies
- 1.8k views
I took a quick trip over to my place in the country in Paricatuba yesterday afternoon. The bridge across the Negro River should be done by November. But, it is still a trip of serval hours to get there. It was good to take a dip in the river and take a look at the palms and plants. A lot of work needs to be done. And, since the dry season has not set in heat, sun, and little rain is the rule until December. The bridge will eliminate the nice part of the trip, the boat ride. These pictures are arriving in Cacau Pireira on the other side of the river.

Orania Trispatha & Orania Ravaka
by Palmaholic John- 4 replies
- 1.4k views
Hi, my name is John and I have an addiction....I'm spending way too much time, money, and energy on building a nice little backyard palm garden that I can enjoy. So, as I'm looking at all the postings on PalmTalk....I guess I'm probably in the right place here. I've ordered seedlings of Orania Trispatha and Orania Ravaka...one of each should arrive on Wednesday. Does anyone have information on growing these palms? These are both distichous (leaves arranged like a traveler's palm). Do you know if their leaves grow this way in their early stages of life? Do they twist as they grow or will the leaves always remain oriented in the same way? I'm also wondering this …

Royals growing wild
by Zeeth- 8 replies
On a trip out to Emerson point on Snead Island in Manatee county, I noticed a few groups of Royals growing wild out in the forest there. I assume they came from a 100 year old avenue of tall royals in another side of the park. The odd thing is that even though the royals that are in the other side of the park have been there since 1910, none of the royals that I saw growing wild in the park were very old. I haven't a clue why this would be honestly. For your enjoyment though, the pictures: 100 year royals (there's a sign stating their planting date as 1910) Looking up at the royals Wild royals growing in the forest in the same park

Last weekend on saturday morning I left my house in Corona, Riverside county to go on a two day PRA! My first destination is (surf city)Huntington Beach, Orange County. The gardener chooses to remain private. The couple that lives there wanted to let all of you see his efforts! His wife said he's plant crazy and she doesn't mind it a bit. With this thread there are going to be lots of pics posted. I would like to ask of you to please not post while I am posting. I will let you know on my last post when I am done for the moment. Also if you wouldn't multi quote any post with pics in it. It will take me a few trips to the computer to complete this thread. Click o…

Hi, Many of you know I started our Facebook page to help promote palmtalk. I think it has done a modest job of doing so. I would like our members to know one thing our Facebook page does that Palmtalk can't. When you post videos, pics and links they stay on the front page until an administrator deletes it!!! Right now if you go to our Facebook page and click on links there is an amazing amount of really intresting links that people have posted. Also there are a few cool videos posted too. There care not that many pics posted. I would like to encourage anyone with videos, links and pics we would enjoy to please post them. Off topic videos are welcomed for now…

Parajubaea Sunkha
by PalmGuyWC- 2 replies

Show and tell: Who has the largest P. Sunkha? Does anyone have one that is flowering? I'm told it is the rarest of the Parajubaeas in cultivation, the easiest to grow, and the most cold hardy. PACSOA states that it was only described in 1996, so it is a relatively new introduction to cultivation. There are a few in the SF Bay area, but none are very large. Dick

Here are a few pictures of the new nursery up and running. Space will be much greater than what I have had before. I have to thank the following people for being so helpful with me in getting this going. Rusty on Pine Is. - gave me room to grow my plants when there was no other option for over a year! I still owe you about 20 favors. Vincent - Not a big poster on the forum, but helped whenever he could. Ken Johnson - Again, holding my plants for me while I lived in Miami, I owe him big time. Tom Brown - A high school teacher from Michigan who comes down here in the summer to help out his brother in law. Helped me figure out what supplies I needed to get the s…
