back from the dead- the big Coconut is alive !!!

Our tall Cocos nucifera 'Green Malayan' has begun growing again. It was seemingly dead after this past cold winter. All of our coconuts were killed. This specimen was our tallest. It was planted in Nov. 2001 and survived a dip to 27F one night in Jan. 2003 with just moderate burn. This past winter we had 6 nights at 32F or below, the coldest being 29F. And the night it dropped to 29F it was below freezing for 12 hours!!!. It didn't show much damage for awhile then around early April it started declining and by June most leaves had died and the center had collapsed. About 3 weeks ago the last frond that was still green died and fell over. No growth had emerged the entire s…

Need help with this King Palm
by FallbrookCA- 5 replies

I just planted this triple king and it looks like this new frond is turning a slight brown. Am I overwatering? or is it getting sun burned? Or maybe some transplant shock? Here is a photo, hopefully someone can help out.

If this was your palm, what would you do? I have my chainsaw ready. The cold of this past winter damaged all of the leaves on this Foxtail. Every new leaf that has come out falls over and turns brown.

World renoun traveler, Aussie Rat Pack member, PRA Team International member, and all around great guy, Colin Wilson (palmtreesforpleasure), blew through San Diego's premiere gardens like a cyclone! Here are a few pics of a short leg of his journey where he stayed for 3 days and 2 glorious nights with us at Manambe Lavaka . Enjoy. Colin and BS Man about Palms getting started at Balboa Park on our way to Palm Canyon Ficus macrophylla, the Moreton Bay Fig. The scale is deceiving. We were 20 feet up on an elevated bridge. Those roots are at least 4 feet tall. Bill got his hand stuck inside of a fossilized fern trunk....again! At Jim Wright's famou…

Chamaedorea tepejilote
by Jonathan- 27 replies
- 5.3k views
Hi all, I had some C. tepejilote plants that were getting all wobbly on their shanks - so decided to try a method of forcing some stilt roots that I'd read about in a PACSOA magazine article. I cut up some 90 X 200mm plastic pots and placed them around the base of the trunk, filled with damp sphagnum moss. A few months later....Bobs your Aunts husband....stilt roots! You'll notice the string tying all the plants together - that shows how unstable they had become through years of neglect. I hope that when the new roots hit the potting mix these palms will really take off. C. tepejilote with pants on.... ....closer.... ....whats in there?....

Evening photos of pond and palms
by Palm crazy- 15 replies

Sorry about the quality I took these at the last minute and without the tripod so not the best. Will add more later this weekend since they are saying low 90's. Most of the plants and palms in this small area are still young. Except for some chammy's. The waterfall is very loud. The red lights add some color at night, are just art glass I put over pathway lights. Baby Butia x Jubaea Chammy's; left trunking radicals, right regular radicals. Water movement is great day or night. Whoops I see a blank spot. Waterfall moves very fast so no fish. Will add more photos later, thanks for looking.

My Burgeoning Jungle
by buccaneers37- 7 replies

I took a picture of my P. sylvestris that was installed Thursday & that I had to "lower" on Saturday. I also have a picture of the silver S. repens (of which I already had 3) & S. minor that I picked up in Christmas two weeks ago. While I was out taking pictures, I thought I would get updated photos of what my front & back yards look like now. I am trying to go for the "jungle" look, so I'm hoping we have several mild winter in a row so they can get well established & start to fill in. Since there are still bare spots, I'm not through planting yet. I am also going to attempt to take all the grass out of the front yard (around the palms, which is about 75-8…

Dypsis puzzle

I haven't been posting much lately, funnily enough, because between watering, I've been up all hours building my new website. You'd think that was a bricks and mortar job far away on a hill, wouldn't you? So my new girlfriend is a load of fancy coding languages that I just bumped into; AJAX, JQuery and Protoype. You're not impressed yet, I can tell, so here's a little Dypsis puzzle. Can you identify the species? Some here may even know the photographer, and have seen this palm for real: http://www.freshpalm...om/puzzle1.html

Another one bites the dust

Once I saw the ooze coming out of the palm it was just too far gone so I snapped off the top of the palm. Someone cry with me, the Carpoxylon didn't pull thru... Called Mike over at the palmtreedr.com and he cried with me while we discussed one other palm that is pretty well inflicted with fungal problems over last winters record breaking cold weather. Thielaviopsis is a mean way to die! GRRRR!!!! And just to add a great bit of insult to injury this palm is located in a quarantined area of Boca Raton for Mediterranean Fruit Fly, and they were dining and breeding on the palm. This was not a good day for palm growing.

The Good The Bad and The Ugly

I have always been a big advocate of growing palms that i think have a good chance down here but occasionally some slip under the radar and don't perform as expected . Ok here are 3 palms that i have had for a while -some are just not suited to Tasmanias climate ! THE GOOD Grown from a small sprouted seed 2 yrs ago -powers away all through winter ! THE BAD Archontophoenix purpurea Just sits there doing nothing no matter what i do ,fert , fungicide -even the greenhouse is no good , (Alexandrae grows well here though go figure??) The Ugly Arenga engleri Refused to grow in the last 12 months at all ?? reckon it ne…

I am guessing this hotel is Zone 9a normally, probably zone 8b last winter. Yet, the garden looked great this weekend. Here are a few shots. These are full size sabals rear, not sure on the front palm, on top of a 4 story grotto with a swim in bar at the pool level. Awesome gardens, and I might add, a great place to stay as well.

PALMS WANTED FOR EPIC PALM SPACE
by DoomsDave- 31 replies
- 2.6k views
Hello, everyone: As you may know if you're in the PSSC, Mile Square Park, has a "Palm Island" display of rare palms. MSP is located in the City of Fountain Valley, in Orange County near Huntington Beach. What you may not know is that one of our long-standing members, Ralph Velez, has established a relationship with the management of Mile Square, which will allow palm lovers to plant palms outside the relatively limited Palm Island area. Mile Square Park is literally that, a mile square on each side, plenty of space. This could be one of the world's epic palm places. All that's needed are more palms! The potential here is enormous. Broad lawns are watered …
