Around the trio of flag poles at the infield of Daytona International Speedway? The groundkeeps desire to limit volunteers by removing flower spathes evident during a close-up inspection did not make this seed gatherer very happy Go ahead and shoot me now - I did not get a pic - but might be able to grab a background showing visual in the next day or two..... Anyone wanna know or want to take a guess?

I have this palm labeled Archonotophoenix purpurea but I can't escape the hunch it is mislabeled. Can anyone tell me what it is? Can it take FL sun? I'd like to plant it but only in the right spot. As always, many thanks for your expertise. Stem Top view

Phoenix reclinata (or hybrid?)
by awkonradi- 10 replies

I was on the coast in San Diego, California this weekend. Among many palms there, I was impressed with a clumping palm, which I think was Phoenix reclinata, or a hybrid or relative thereof. I have not seen these palms in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I would appreciate advice whether they could survive here. Sorry, no photographs, but they looked like any Phoenix reclinata retrieved by Google images. Thanks! Andrei

Thinning out clumping palms
by realarch- 3 replies
- 3.5k views
I was just reading the Areca vestiaria thread and got to wondering about thinning out clumping palms and wether or not the wound of the cut stem should be treated with a fungicide or the like. I am constantly thinning out a grove of D. lutescens without any treatment and haven't seen any negative symptoms yet, but not sure if I'm inviting problems someday down the road. Any experience good or bad? Any tips or techniques?

Memories of the cold, 2010.
by cfkingfish- 16 replies

Thought I would post some pictures in remembrance of the 2010 winter. Here is a picture of me in my garage, which I had stacked with plants. I have a 1500 watt heater, it kept the area at least 60 during the cold spell. Plants sat in there for 10 days. The second picture is taken in the middle of the day, it eventually hit 41F, but just shortly. The third one is the side of my house. The Bottle and D. lutescens were burnt, but both recovered very well. The Ptychosperma in my neighbor's yard is now dead.

I am obsessed with having a nice little grouping of these palms and it seems the only possibility is growing them from seed.I know that not all Dwarf Catechu seeds produce dwarf palms but what percentage is a resonable expectation.I would like to end up with five nice little palms.Should I order 25,50,or 100 seeds?

Palms and the Recession
by ghar41- 9 replies

Nowhere in the country has been hit harder by the economy than here in the central valley of California. Over the summer we "rescued" many B. capitatas, J chilensis, C humilis that were slated for destruction. When we arrived at one site, an entire row of mature B. edulis had been dug, destroyed and were being buried. Residences are drying up, and once attractive commercial lots are left to fend. Luckily, these P. dactylifera are accustomed to harsh, dry conditions...I hope they make it, but I also realize they may not be in the plans for the next owner. Especially since these palms are showing serious signs of deterioration. Most of all, we are all hoping for …

I have only been growing palms for 5 years now, so it is easy for me to say this was a slow growing season. But in talking to some growers that have been doing this for a very long time, they kept stating this is the coldest Spring/Summer they can ever remember. A news paper in San Diego just printed this graph. I think this shows pretty well how cold we have been. It has been a crazy year and now that we head into fall I have doubts we will get a hot close to the year.

Palms From Ken Johnson
by buccaneers37- 16 replies

These are palms that Ken brought me his last two trips. The K. oliviformis & C. baileyana were from his nursery, He delivered the others to me that I had ordered from two other nurseries: S. stenepotela; A. myolensis, C. plumosa. I would recommend him to anyone looking for specimen palms. He has very good prices & he charged me a fair price to deliver items, from other nurseries, that he didn't carry. These aren't the greatest pictures, the sun is going down & messed with the lighting.

Unusual Chamaerops
by PalmGuyWC- 4 replies
I have a Chamaerops that I purchased many years ago in Tampa Florida. Photos of it have been posted in various threads on Palm Talk many times, and is usually referred to as "Mutant Chamaerops." The palm is quite distinctive as the fronds only have a few blades and look something like an unopened fan.The blades are thick and covered with white tomentum when they first open. This palm is more unusual in more ways than one, as it's also a dwarf and the trunks are only about 1/3 the thickness of a "normal" Chamaerops. The strangest thing about this palm is that it seems to produce seeds asexually, that is, without pollen from a male Chamaerops. Some years there will be a …

Possibly the tallest King Palm?

I know this is the biggest Archontophoenix I have ever seen. I am told it is Alexandrae and could be 50+ years old. The house is in Ft. Myers Florida just off McGregor Blvd. across from the fire station that I work. If any of you know McGregor Blvd, it is where Thomas Edison and Henry Ford's summer homes are. Royal palms line both side of the blvd that date back to when they were alive and this King towers all of them.

Palms for Atlanta?
by Tag- 16 replies

Hi everyone! It's been a long time since I've visited the forums. It's been a transition time for me and I haven't been able to devote any time to my palm fascination. In the past year my wife has given birth to my second son, I've switched jobs and moved from Jax to ATL. Now that I'm getting settled, I'm looking for recommendations to add to my garden. Trachy's are the obvious choice around here, but what else would you recommend? I'll go marginal, but I'm not looking to put in too much effort other than placement around the house. I spent too many sleepless nights in Jax covering and heating my zone pushers only to have all my efforts go to waste. I've seen som…

Coconut and Date
by AggiePalms- 1 reply

Here is a dumb question, but I was in Whole Foods and bought some Middle Eastern date rolls covered in coconut. Very tasty. Where were they first made? The question is, do coconuts grow naturally anywhere in the Mediteranean? How about successful plantings? Or is the winter temperature too low? Definitely coconut/dates coexist along some of the coastal areas south and east of the Mediterranean, but in the Mediterranean itself? Just wondering about ultimate source of this candy; where in the Middle East it could have first origninated.
