A Seed Out of the Past

Occasionally, I come across palm seedlings, among my potted palms, that are germinations from abandoned seeds that have been given a year or two but did not germinate. Well, here is an empty seed casing that I found next to a seedling. I cannot remember what palm species name goes with this seed. I would appreciate some help in identifying this guy. Thanks in advance! The seedling has a rather short medium wide strap leaf with raspy edges.

I thought I would post an interesting story for Butyagrus lovers... Merrill should love this. I was in the mountains over the last couple of days and stayed at a very good nursery friends house. Last year he bought a Butyagrus, it was an ugly horrible yellow thing then , it has been transplanted to his nursery and is still an ugly yellow thing. Apparently it was growing together with Butia eriosptha and has always been yellow. I find it a very odd Butyagrus. The trunk and boots arrangemnt, being tightly packed remind of Butia, but it is without a doubt Butyagrus. I have in my mind it could be an F2. My newspaper reports today that many trees including a whole line of juvenile coconuts planted recently along a stretch of road that is by the sea in the business district of Mumbai have been cut down to beautify the city ahead of Barack Obama's, (president of the U.S.A.), visit. It seems they were guilty of "not growing" and are to be replaced with date palms. I pass that stretch often and have seen the coconuts - not very pretty due to the effect of fronds being pruned for transportation but they were certainly not dieseased or unhealthy. Our little Ceroxylon parvum is still alive and growing healthily here at Leu Gardens. The seed came from RPS and it was planted in May 2007, so it has survived 2 long, humid summers here. It now has a split leaf and enjoying the cooler winter weather. I had tried several C. amazonicum and a C. alpinum nearby but none survived.

I bought this a couple years ago because I thought it was Acoelorraphe. Yes it was a big box impulse buy, $15 for a 5 gallon. I doesn't look exactly llike a small Chamaerhops, but there's a resemblance. Here's some pix of it on my deck with Bo for scale. (freakypalmguy - It's still yours if you want it, or I can trade it for something else in your greenhouse. Act fast because I'm getting attached to it)

I discovered a fire ant colony about 2 inches away from a young palm going about half way around. I usually use boiling water to get rid of these, but I'm cautious not to damage the plant this time. If I get one of those fire ant killer mixes, would they be OK to use so close to a palm? Appreciate any advice

Dear Friends Three pics of a strange palm (is it a palm?) grown from seeds. I have forgotten from where they came. Long time - may be 3 years - this plant grew extremely slowly - or not at all. The leaves came out of a strangely inclined short "stem". Now it has straighten up and, since some months, it's developing better and looks healthy. No spines,coriaceous leaves. What do you mean? Last weekend I decided to use Ecosense insecticide to treat my 1/2 dozen 1g Dypsis pembana seedlings for some scale. Apparently, these soapy/oily sprays kill the little varmints by suffocating them rather than poisoning them. I've been trying to steer away from chemical insecticides unless a plant is in dire straits. After spraying down my seedlings I put them next to the birdcage beneath my Adonidias. Last night I noticed one of the D. pembanas I'd posted on eBay had nasty tan splotches on its formerly green leaves. The others showed the same symptoms.
