The topic Glen wrote about palms that break your heart prompted me to start a topic about palms that look like other palms. Especially hardy palms that serve the same landscaping purpose as their tropical twin. As Pogo Bob said Beccariophoenix Alfredi and coconut. can you think of some others?

Who likes to witness the first sunrays on the palms in this board? Even when I`m away from the garden, when in the apartment downtown, I always enjoy taking a look at the palms very early in the morning. Please add your own morning photos here in this thread... Many thanks to Nigel and Marc's initial clarification about the special seed arrangement on Winsan branch and other guys' contribution which makes me look deeper into Winsan http://www.palmsociety.org.uk/forum/topic.asp?boardid=1&show=31&page=1&topicid=3427&topicpage=12 Here I am presenting an overview of Winsan,a possible new Trachycarpus variety for reference. Winsan is just a variegated form of Trachycarpus. We tentatively picked the seeds for the first time in 2008 in a forest park after searching for years as we believe the round leaves is also a variegated feature of trachcyarpus like the small leaves of waggy. Though so far most of the offs…

Struggling Seedlings
by tjwalters- 5 replies
I have a few seedlings (species) that seem to be struggling. Any thoughts on what the issue(s) might be? Licuala triphylla - new leaves are pale green and ends seem to turn brown (but not dry out) Wallichia disticha - some leaves pale green, others appear to be variegated (though I don't think they actually are). These seem to be doing a bit better now, but still could look better.

Hi all, Been one of those warm Spring days with constant, steady rain. More than a dash of northern humidity thrown in for good measure. Before heading over to Indonesia tomorrow, thought I would take a wander round the yard and take a few snaps. Hope you enjoy ! Orianopsis.

I bought the seeds as Ravenea glauca, but have been told by experienced growers they are not glauca. They are taking my cool weather like champs and even making a good house plant. Anybody know what species? Thanks! Perry

I even posted a picture of him in front of a few enormous Foxy Ladies , and just to embarrass him even more , here it is again. Great to see you here mate , enjoy .

Incredible Palm Landscape I saw today
by Justin- 3 replies
Sorry for the limited photo size - I am on my laptop on wi-fi in a rental, and couldn't upload much. But I saw this house today (whilst house shopping), and I was awestruck. If anyone recognizes the property, please PM me (don't reply on this post). I wouldn't be surprised if the owner is on this board, and I don't want his/her name being spilled on the main board, but I would be interested in talking to him/her to find out more about the property. Nice diameter and outline of this mutt. Interesting that it seems to be three trees of the same cross planted near each other, rather than one triple off the same set of roots.

Maybe not the prettiest ones I've seen, but this pair is up there for among the tallest I've seen recently (sorry for the shade--comes too early these days...): And this grove, while shorter and somewhat marred by a 40' Washingtonia volunteer that probably was half the age of these, was still not bad, especially for a college campus: Surprisingly, very few kings or queens (or even washies) are on the Long Beach campus.

Germination ideas
by Matt in SD- 21 replies
- 2.6k views
From what I've read, heard, and generally observed, it seems that the primary challenge of seed germination is to get moisture to enter into the interior of the seed (endosperm?) without contamination from damaging fungus or bacteria. Examples of natural ways which the outer "husk" of the seed is weakened are by fires, and going through the digestive tract of animals. People often do artificial things like filing off part of the husk, or cracking the seed to speed up germination. But has anyone ever considered laser drilling minute holes into the husk of a seed to allow water penetration and induce germination. Obviously we don't all have lasers lying around…

How old are these latania ?
by hery- 7 replies
Hi, Some of you may have been a little amaze when I announce three hundred years for a wild latan in the shade, in my previous topic. Here by comparison one-first picture, latan near the fence- sow by my father in 1956, germinated the same year, grows mainly in the shade. So it's up to you for giving an estimation of the age of the five wild latans following. Be careful must be a trap ! Hint : trunk irregular diameter tally with drought time. Regards. Hery

First Season of Planting 1 2
by nkbish- 42 replies

I bought my first house about one year ago. When we moved the yard was a mess. The back yard had three things in the ground (Italian Cypress-40’, giant birds, and a CIDP with dead fronds and a sloppy trunk). This last spring I started attempting to create my inland tropical paradise. Here is the work I have put in.
