Jack Frost drops by

My front thermometer said it dropped to 35.6F this morning but I don't believe it. We had frost everywhere and had to scrape windshields. When I took these photos the sun had melted much of it but the damage is already becoming apparent. I no longer cover palms in the Caribbean Garden, except the red spicata coconut and Chamaedorea deckeriana. But I spent much of the afternoon after we got home from Miami deploying protection to the shade garden and moving pots indoors or into the heated greenhouse. When I toured the yard this morning about 8:30 I found less evidence of frost there. Apparently the queen palm canopy helped - I hope. Tonight should be almost as cold. I'm s…

You don't really realize just how fast things grow until you look at pictures from a few years back. I planted my first palms in spring of 2008 and now a little over two years later everything is starting to fill in. Here are a few before and after plus some just before pics. This is Rhopalostylis baueri var. cheesmanii. I planted it mid summer 2008 in full sun as a two gallon. Needless to say this thing is a rocket ship. It is smoking my R. Chatham island.

Hi After December snowfall, my friend Gabriel took some pictures in the area of Locarno (southern Switzerland). This area belongs to one of the mildest in southern Switzerland. Close to the lake (Lago Maggiore), the lows ranged between -4 and -5 degrees Celsius. You will find the pictures under the following link. Ciao, Christian

Collecting Parajubaea sp. in South America
by insipidtoast- 18 replies

I know that P. sunkha and P. torralyi are native to Bolivia, however I will be in the Peruvian Andes next summer (Cuzco region) and want to either collect these seeds in the wild, or find a vendor down there. Does anyone know of a good source for these seeds while I'm in Cuzco (about 7 days)? I live in Southern California, and have heard that although torralyi is faster and taller, it dies for unknown reasons (what a bummer)! Does anyone have any more recent info as to the cause of sudden death for torralyi? Since it is known to die unexpectedly, would you say sunkha is a better, surefire alternative for SoCal? Also, to the best of your knowledge, which species has…

A Neglected Beauty - Dictyosperma album var. 'rubra'
by Dypsisdean- 6 replies
While posting previously I asked for the ID on a palm that apparently ended up being Dictyosperma album var. 'furfuracea' HERE I had a hard time believing that all the Dictyospermas were now considered the same species. If that's not the case, please correct me. I posted the two I had in the other thread to show how different they are. Now one of them is opening a new leaf. I thought the "rubra" only referred to the leaflet margins and some other rose colors in the petioles. I had no idea it also referred to the new leaf as well. And I'm not complaining. One month in the ground in a newly cleared area.

The damage from the last cold snap is very obvious here in Miami beach. Most of the lower fronds are turning brown, and the tree's look beat up !!! How are they looking in other parts of the state ? I am beginning to think that any where on peninsula Florida is really too cold to grow Coconut palms nicely !!!

Bangalows go swimming
by Walter John- 12 replies

Archontophoenix love a good dip. These guys in the following pics (and video) are species cunninghamiana or "Bangalows" or "Piccabeens" or "Kings" but I and the rest of the ratpack like to call them "Bangas". As you may know, it's been raining heavily for a long time here along the east coast and central areas of Queensland, in fact the whole bloody state is inundated. Down the back of my place runs a shallow creek and in times of rain a plenty, she gets a good flow on. There are native bangas growing all around the creek so it is quite obvious then that these palms love a good drink or in the present case, a good swim. Note that the palms in the photos are in fact …

Jubaeas went where?
by barryo- 32 replies
- 2.1k views
A few years ago, representatives of some religious or philosophical group went around Santa Barbara, buying up and removing quite a number of Jubaeas that were still of a movable size. Used to be, you could see quite a few around town, with only a few feet of trunk. Now they're gone. Just out of curiosity, does anyone remember what the organization's name was? I thought it'd be interesting to find out how those palms are doing.

Please help ID some palms
by Jeff in St Pete- 26 replies

A couple weeks ago I was in Bocas del Toro, Panama and had the good fortune of meeting Lin from Finca Los Monos Botanical Garden. She gave me a two hour private tour of her fantastic garden which was the highlight of my trip to these beautiful Caribbean islands off the coast of Panama. I will post all the photos from Bocas del Toro and lots more photos from this botanical garden in the Travel section in the next day or so. It seems that a few of the palms were labeled incorrectly and some did not have id's so I was hoping for some help in identifying these palms for Lin. I gave her the link for palmtalk and told her I would be posting the photos so she will probably…

Palm Tree/palm Talk Resurrection

Hello All, I can't help drawing some parallels over uplifting events of the past couple weeks that bode well. Okay, high falutin' language aside, I'll begin with a little review. Back on Jan. 2, Cape Coral had its first freeze in at least 2-3 years. Temps here dropped to 31F. As if that wasn't bad enough, idiot here forgot to turn off the sprinklers, which went off on schedule from midnight to 4 a.m. When I went out to get the paper the next morning my yard & garden looked like a scene from "A Christmas Story": icicles hanging from every frond & blade of grass. My palms took a hit. Cold air is bad enough; cold air & ice are a double whammy. In the fro…

I lost a 10 footer foxtail, my best looking one. It was 8 inches at the base and it was blown over. The roots were ripped off the trunk. Hmmm... I was not a bit sad because the new open spot is perfect for a different palm rather than the common foxtail.

Hello everyone, - It is winter in Calcutta and at 10 degrees C at night is unpleasant for us heat loving bengalis. I'm visiting my palms after two months and although growth has significantly slowed down, here are a few items of interest. 1. Carpoxylon new leaf - its first since transplant into the ground. 2. A new leaf on a potted king - and it seems to have just the faintest hints of red ? 3. Lovely light green of the Red Latan new leaf

How do you prepare your soil to plant a palm in the ground? Do you use straight palm/cactus mix or do you make up your own? Lastly, What fertalizer do you use and when and how often do you apply? Dry or wet?
