Hardiness of Syagrus Botryophora / Sancona?
by spockvr6- 6 replies

One of the palms on my hitlist to get with some size has been a S. botryophora. I was down to Kopsick in St Pete last weekend and checked out the specimens there and was pretty surprised to see that all of them looked burned. Most of them were 20-30 ft tall and the weather station local to this area (within eyesight) logged a low of 39F in December 2010 and 37F in January 2011. These palms are all in the wide open, but Tampa bay is only a few hundred feet away. Is this to be expected of these palms, or is it something to do with salt tolerance? The S. sanconas looked the same.....also burned.

Phoenix question

Of 5 species of Phoenix commonly cultivated in Sarasota (roebelenii, reclinata, sylvestris, canariensis, dactylifera), P. roebelenii is by far the most widespread. However if you look at the wild grown weed dates in the area, almost none of them look as if they have any P. roebelenii in them. Most of them display either P. reclinata or P. canariensis characteristics, or a mixture of both with some P. sylvestris. I read on this forum before that P. roebelenii has the most dominant genes in the genus, so why don't I see it in the wild hybrids? Also P. reclinata is the only one listed as an invasive species, and it kind of looks that way. But the other ones grow here pretty …

What's the secret
by Alicehunter2000- 20 replies

When I visit big box stores it always seems that palms and other plants that have just come from the mega-growers look almost artificial in color and health. What is the secret?...I fertilize, I water, I try and buy good soil. Nothing it seems works as well as what the professionals use. I also notice that high end hotels seem to be in on the secret. Inside potted palms seem to be vividly green and robust. Are they just rotating and buying new stuff every month or are they using some sort of high nitrogen fertilizer? What gives?

Dear Friends Today let's see the repotting work of Chamaerops Humilis var.Arborescens (Single trunk Form). The Seeds were sent to me by brother M@x.They have all germinated well for me.But i have realised that they are a bit slow growers compared to the regular ' Mediterranean Fan Palm.' At the moment the climate is much better than what we experienced last month,So we felt we repot this baby, and see wheather their is any marked improvement in its grouth rate. And from the following post you will have vivid illustration as to how we went about doing this repotting work ? Hope you all enjoy seeing it & give your valuable suggestions...So that we can improve i…

Dear Friends This gives me immense pleasure to meet you all through this lovely thread, where i have tried to give step by step illustrations for those who are new to palm growing..And each time,i try to improvise new methods which are most apt for our hot tropical climate having high coastal humidity influence. So the medium is constantly kept as porous as possible for easy drainage of excess of water.. Today iam going to show you how to plant or repot a Chamaerops humilis x Vulcano..And the seeds were from brother M@x.I must say i did get more than 90% germination on those seeds. And my sincere thanks to him for those fresh seeds. http://www.palmtalk.org/forum…

Sorry if this isn't deserving of a new topic, but here are a couple of photos of the above mentioned palms from today 1/16/2011: They are generally in pretty good shape considering how much cold we've had here in Orlando. Some damage, but nothing looks critical.

ID Needed Please

My tagging/labeling efforts weren't so great back when I first caught the palm bug. I bought some seeds from our local palm & cycad society's seed bank. I still have packing slip for what I bought - but would like to hear from the experts as to what this sprout is from my list. It's gone pinnate now and I have my own thoughts but would appreciate everyone elses' views. I've narrowed down the list from 10 to six - as I am quite certain that it is not these....Now for the potentials: Dypsis decaryi, Carpentaria acuminata, Dypsis leptocheilos, Archontophoenix alexandrare, Roystona borninquena, & Archontophoenix cunninghamiana Pictures are fair but I'll apolog…

Palm Cold Protection that has worked

I have a 12' tall majesty palm out in the open and on the NW side of the house. Each year I bungee the fronts together, wrap one strand of C9 lights around it and mount a single flood light to the trunk right at the crown. I created a bag out of picnic table cloth material (plain fabric on one side, vinyl coated on the outside). The 12' long bag is just duct taped and stapled to close it up on all edges. I mounted a 2.25 inch PVC pipe into the ground close to the trunk. I just slip the bag over the palm and the pipe holds it up. Then I bungee the bottom of the bag tightly to the bottom of the trunk. So far her majesty has survived down to 20 degrees for 10 hours and that …

After having the D-8 bulldozer roam my two acres for three full weeks it was good to finally be done with that and get a driveway in place, and be able to drive in and begin on the next exciting phase: planting palms! Here's the first truckload arriving on my new (somewhat temporary) driveway: two Dypsis prestoniana, seven Clinostigma sp. Hawaiian hybrid and four Lemurophoenix halleuxii. In the second photo the palms are ready to be offloaded in the back part of the property.

What Palms do I look for in Thailand
by Kumar- 7 replies

Hello Everyone, I will be going for to Pataya in Thailand for three days in February. Can anyone recommend some botanical sights in the vicinity that I should tey to see, and whether there are any particular palms I should look out for and try to acquire if possible? Will it be expensive? Should it be seed or sedlings? Are these sold and if so, how difficult is it to bring them back by air? (PS - Dean, It seemed to me that it was ok to start this on this forum, - please move it if necessary.)

I planted my three latanias in 1995 on the same day from a 3 gallon pots. They grew great, no problem at all until last winter......... Stumpy was just as large as my red Latania in the other photo, it was the first to slowly die. The red in the pic is a large female, the yellow is much more compact/slower growing and is a male.

Since tomorrow night we are forecasted to be in the upper 20's for about 12 hours, I'm wondering if my sheets are really going to help? This is a long time to stave of damage, but both plant and animal cells will freeze up under a sheet or blanket for that long, any idea's, tips or suggestions? HAs anyone tried placing an incandescent or flood light at the trunk? My weak logic seems to think that the warmth would radiate up and be somewhat trapped under the canopy of the sheet's I'll place. My foxtails are only about 12-15' so provided there's no wind, it would seem like it might make a small difference...
