Is it time to start watering again?
by Justin- 8 replies

With the recent warm and dry conditions, I was thinking this morning that I may need to water a bit, just to keep my plants hydrated. But when I moved the mulch aside and starting digging in the dirt, the top layer of soil is still moist, presumably from the ground being saturated earlier this month and also the fog at night. Since the soil is still moist, I don't need to water, correct? Or do the leaves themselves need some water every now and then to avoid drying out?

Incentives for Endangered Palm Collectors? 1 2 3

Does anyone know of any grants, funding, or tax exemptions for people growing palms on the endangered list? More than likely, there’s no such thing….but, I thought I’d ask around. Wouldn’t this be a nice incentive for people to do the world a favor and plant more rare and threatened species?

Hi guys. I recently got some seeds and awaiting seedlings eagerly Just one question how do they transplant? Say if I plant them in soil and I move to a new address, could I dig em out and replant them, or are they just like Bismarck palms that don't like to be disturbed? Thanks. -Daniel

Palms in Pots update 1 2
by Gbarce- 45 replies
- 5.2k views
i recently made a post on the stuff I have planted in the ground. These are update shots of plants that I am keeping in pots for one reason or the other--too small, too valuable, no spot in the garden for it yet. This looks like a Sommeira Elegans but is actually an Areca Subacaulis. Pits a pretty slow grpwer. I've had it 2 years but its still small. I've been moving it around a bit trying to find a spot where it will flourish. It has thick leathery leaves so I thoight that it could take a bit of sun--boy was I wrong. It looks happy in this spot though-- its been here for over hald a year.

yellow spotted Pritchardia's
by Steve Mac- 2 replies

I've noticed a lot of different Pritchardias often have yellowy blotches especially on the older leaves. Is this some sort of common deficency or excess or just usual for the species. On any other palm it would look like too much sun. Is there a way to prevent it?

Dear Friends This gives me immense pleasure to meet you all through this lovely thread, where i have tried to give step by step illustrations for those who are new to palm growing..And each time,i try to improvise new methods which are most apt for our hot tropical climate having high coastal humidity influence. So the medium is constantly kept as porous as possible for easy drainage of excess of water.. Today iam going to show you how to plant or repot a Phoenix Roebelenii x Dacty. And the germinated seeds came from brother M@x.And my sincere thanks to him for those germinated seeds & for his time. http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/uploads/emoticons/emoticon…

What is consensus on the typical age/height of C. mitis trunks before they flower and croak in FL? I ask as I noticed the two tallest trunks on my largest mitis clump have started to seed. I planted this clump as a 15 gallon about 5 years ago and Id guess tha tallest trunks are ~25 ft tall. The trunks that are seeding I have noticed have hardly added any new fronds in the past year, so apparently all the energy of the palm is going to seed production.

Hardiness of Syagrus Botryophora / Sancona?
by spockvr6- 6 replies
- 1.4k views
One of the palms on my hitlist to get with some size has been a S. botryophora. I was down to Kopsick in St Pete last weekend and checked out the specimens there and was pretty surprised to see that all of them looked burned. Most of them were 20-30 ft tall and the weather station local to this area (within eyesight) logged a low of 39F in December 2010 and 37F in January 2011. These palms are all in the wide open, but Tampa bay is only a few hundred feet away. Is this to be expected of these palms, or is it something to do with salt tolerance? The S. sanconas looked the same.....also burned.

Phoenix question

Of 5 species of Phoenix commonly cultivated in Sarasota (roebelenii, reclinata, sylvestris, canariensis, dactylifera), P. roebelenii is by far the most widespread. However if you look at the wild grown weed dates in the area, almost none of them look as if they have any P. roebelenii in them. Most of them display either P. reclinata or P. canariensis characteristics, or a mixture of both with some P. sylvestris. I read on this forum before that P. roebelenii has the most dominant genes in the genus, so why don't I see it in the wild hybrids? Also P. reclinata is the only one listed as an invasive species, and it kind of looks that way. But the other ones grow here pretty …
